Catte Lane - BR Boxfile layout - Sentinel 0-6-0

  • 2 weeks later...

Using a day off to advantage, I have done a bit more to the new box.

The track ha been coloured using ink pens and glued down with PVA. Suitable weights were placed on to hold it in place. Before doing this I cut a trench in the foam to run a wire though.

I've also been waving the PVA at my first laser cut wood kit. OK it's not the most complicated kit but it will fit in the box and it's good practice for more substantial projects.

The way it's looking at the moment, this double garage will be in the garden of a bungalow. So I have been browsing G**gle for suitable images to work from.

Further to the above, I have now painted the garages and roof with rattle cans, building Halfords grey undercoat and the roof their undercoat red. One garage door will be open and that bay will be matt white. Not decided on door colour(s) yet.

I have selected a dedicated tranche of stock for the layout as whole. 4 locos, 04, 08, 09 and a Sentinel, plus 10 4 wheel wagons and a brake van. All will be Kadee fitted for easy shunting. I might even get round to weathering them...

Just to show how it will look:

And with 'fiddlestick' added:

I have now sourced a socket for the controller recycled from an old fiddleyard. This means I can wire up now and start test running over the whole layout.

Mock up of possible garage scene:

I painted inside one bay with white acrylic and one in white enamel (both matt obviously). Guess who now has a better appreciation of the absorbent qualities of MDF...

I have now added the power socket. OK the soldering isn't the best but it works and, anyway, it will be hidden. I used a hot glue gun to anchor the wiring. Eventually the wires from the track will be covered by trunking that leads to a grey box like BR use for signalling and assorted electrical gubbins. This one will cover the electrical gubbins of the layout!

PS The loco even runs the 'right way' on the controller...

PPS Thanks to the Judge for the socket.

Looking good Steve,

are you going to add any more box files to the layout in the future or stick to the three?

Jerry.

Jerry,

At the moment there aren't any plans. But never say never!

I have now added Metcalfe card sheeting at each end. Working on the theory that this is clearly a box, I have matched the card to that on the adjoining boxfile. There is still other scenic and weathering to be done but I can move on a bit now.

The concrete standing is not glued dowun yet as I want to get the backscene picture on first. There will be a version of the universal REB box in the area that has the trunking disappearing underneath it. This will also cover the socket.

Whilst at the Liverpool show this weekend I picked up a couple of things for the layout.

This signal box (Metcalfe by the look of it) will have its windows boarded up and be abandoned.

Whilst I really don't need any more motive power, this little beauty was a bargain. Now I will have to get the detail. parts to go with it, Laserglaze, works plates, etc, like the other one.

The garage has had some more done to it. The walls are now breeze block using some adhesive printed sheet I found in my stores. The interior walls have had another coat of whitewash too.

My good friend Richard has sent me some pictures of REBs, railway equipment buildings, that I can use to base the one that will go on Catte Lane. It will be a simple scratchbuild project in either card or styrene as it basically a box.

Here is one I will be using for inspiration

I've decided to do the REB in card. After all, it's just a box with three sides, a roof and a floor, as the fourth 'side' will be flush to the backscene to hide the wiring and power socket.

To ensure that every thing is equal, I will be making out of a single piece of 2mm card, cut to the shape of a cross with four arms. This will then be scored in the appropriate places and folded into shape. The roof will have 'flaps' that will fold over to give the edging shown on the prototype; it will also add integrity to the structure. (There will, obviously, be suitable internal bracing too.)

It will sit on suitably sized plastic strip to raise it up enough for the trunking to go underneath. I will also mark out a door on one side, prior to assembly.

Pics in due course.

PS If any experienced card modellers can see any flaws in my design I would welcome their advice. TIA

Life has tended to get the way recently so action on the layout has been on hiatus. However, I have been able to find a little time today.

As mentioned earlier the layout is to have dedicated collection of stock, with Kadee couplings. So, as diversion from the scenic side I used the time to fit the new couplings to few items.

Where fitting Kadees, it is essential to ensure the correct height and this where the jig comes in. Thus:

That van needed a tweak with the essential Kadee pliers. Unlike the rest, which were fine. One end of the Sentinel also required it too.

So, these have been done. Just another eight or so to go, plus a couple more locos.

Some progress over yesterday and today.

3 Bachmann yellow cement wagons, another Sentinel and an 09 have been Kadee fitted with no problem apart from a tweak by the Kadee pliers here and there. However, the Bachy TTA was a different matter. The standard coupler box is too high for the coupling to fit the gauge and, as yet, Kadee doesn't do a dropped head in the NEM range like they do in the normal one. Referring to something I remembered from one of Nigel Burkin's books on wagons, I inserted a piece of 40 thou microstip at each end of the wagon and glued the coupler boxes to that. (Not enough room for a screw unfortunately) This is the result:

I have also had a go at the REB box but after getting so far I realised it was far too big. This has become Mk 1 to be superseded by a smaller Mk 2. I am happy with the method though so will, when the opportunity arises try again. Here is Mk 1:
