The Network Rail Land Rover looked good but was out of period now the layout has been established as 1980s. Handily Oxford have just brought out a yellow BR Sherpa which is just right.

I picked one up in Cutty Black's in York yesterday and got to work on it last night. Dismantled, matt varnished and chap added it is currently like this:

The matt varnish also lightened the colour which is good as I thought it too dark originally. The bloke is Preiser before anyone asks.

Will need weathering when reassembled but I'm happy so far.

I was looking at my boxfile stash and discovered one of them was starting to come apart. This got me thinking...

How about a rather more radical approach?

Obviously it won't fold back up for storage or transportation. Needs bracing too. The rear siding would become the fiddleyard with a scenic break and the front one a fully operational one.

It's needs more thought but I'm not discounting it completely.

Any comments?

Well you can get more expensive box files with removable plastic end caps.

How easy it would be to remove the plastic caps and whether the box would stand up to repeated removal is an open question.

I am not going for the opened out idea for box 4 but another closed one. This will have a through line with a l/h point into a building.

Stage 1 - pilot holes

Stage 3 (Stage 2 was bigger holes) - apply jigsaw

Stage 4 - spay inside with art varnish to seal after repeating Stages 1-3

Stages 5 & 6 - In the past I have had boxes come loose so I thought I would attempt to avoid this possibility with staples

and glue

Well, a day off has proved useful and productive. The progress I wanted to make has been achieved on Box 4, if not without the odd problem along the way.

Firstly, a bit of confession. I intended to use Peco Code 75 but, with a twist. I intended to modify it to correct sleeper spacing using a fold up jig from PH Designs, as shown here by Big Jim --> http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/54463-ph-designs-sleeper-spacing-tool/

However, I had problems getting the track joiners to fit to the extent I abandoned the length I had modified and I found some SMP and used that instead!

This was laid and a couple of 08s were used to test, which was successful. It has now been glued down, which means I can get some basic scenery added before its next appearance at the show on 5th November.

Even though it isn't anywhere near finished, I was able to add Box 4 into the mix and it performed splendidly. It was located between the 'country' section and. 'PW yard' end box. Having the extra siding really adds to the operating potential.

What I was also able to do was cut some Metcalfe cobble sheet to fit Box 4 before the show opened, even if it wasn't stuck down. This will form the base of most of the non-track area. Many thanks to Rich of Betton Street for the sheets!

One disappointment wa the Heljan Class 15 I recently bought which would not traverse the layout properly without derailing in several places. None of the other locos or wagons had the same difficulty so I suspect it's an issue with the back-to-backs. Will have to look into it. It's a pity as it's a lovely loco and will fit nicely on the layout.

At a recent Club night I floored the box with Metcalfe cobbles. These were generously supplied by Richard of Betton St fame.

When I went back to it the next week, this had happened:

Fellow member Mally had ballasted it for me! Given his ballasting is much better than mine, I was very pleased.

If you can see them, I used Rippers' coloured pencils (!) to highlight some individual cobbles. Probably not really visible but I know they're there.

Now I have a good base from which to go forward.
