Took some finding, but go to home page and there is a link to transport photo's in the top right.

ooh heck, went via that Home Page route (thanks for that JZ) and there are other railway pics there as well, remarkably including a couple of me riding round on a rather pretty GW 4-4-0 :O

As a part owner of a class 05 I was fascinated by this photo. Its number can be narrowed down. First it only has 2 manhole covers on the top of the bonnet which narrows it down to the number range D2554 - D2573. (The earlier locos had 10 small manholes). Secondly the position of the Hunslet plate on the bonnet front has a large gap to the top of the bonnet. this makes it one of the batch D2558 - D2573 as the bonnet was a couple of inches taller to accomodate a larger fuel tank. Four of this batch went to Duport's, D2561/68-70. As D2569 was reported stopped in a siding at Hereford on 6/5/68 my money would be on this loco as it could have run a hot box. Admittedly as it is impossible to get a clear view of the number the jury will have to reserve judgement on it's actual identity.

After Paul J seems to have cleared that one up, here are some nice shots of D2554 at Shanklin in 1970 to demonstrate his point:

The difference made by the lack of stripes above the maker's plate is quite pronounced if you compare the picture in the OP with those in the above links.

  • 1 month later...

As this thread has resurfaced I remembered something I'd seen in a Railway Observer. To quote,

"D2568 minus wheels and loaded on to a wagon noted between Newport and Cardiff on 9th May 1968".

This would make it a very good candidate for being the one in the photo.

Paul,

That would tie in nicely with its' delivery to Duport (see earlier posts) - and as it was reported scrapped within twelve months, I think we can assume it was bought as a source of spares for the other Hunslets bought by Duport.

There were certainly some engines that never seemed to move from the siding next to the former Llanelli Foundry office (the former link to the BP&GV)- wish I'd paid more attention....
