A few more, not SUBs....

Class 455, 5860, Clapham Jct, 23 August 1984 (there is the ghost of a SUB in the driver's window.....actually a unit stored in a siding on the up side)

Looking back at the picture in post 252 of the class 56 with 12SUB, I remember seeing that train in the Windsor side at Clapham Junction. The loco driver was having a problem making the brake; I was going home and as there had recently been some sort of industrial dispute, thought "oh damn" (rhymes with bucket) or words to that effect, and carried on going home! There was a good delay while someone worked out how to pipe the SUB to the loco.

The SUBS were comfortable for passengers, not so much for the driver. The Westinghouse brake was superb, but took some skill to use properly.

A few more SUBs...

De-Icing Unit 008, Guildford, 13 September 1983 (ADB975596, formerly 4 SUB DMBSO S108445S of 1948, and ADB975597, formerly 4 SUB DMBSO S109875S of 1941).

...

Nice to see one on the move instead of stuck in a siding.

By the way, I think the former coach numbers might be a bit mixed up there - they only had five digits. Is it possible the last '5' of each has been mis-transcribed from the trailing 'S' somewhere along the line, then another 'S' added.

Eastwest Divide: "By the way, I think the former coach numbers might be a bit mixed up there - they only had five digits. Is it possible the last '5' of each has been mis-transcribed from the trailing 'S' somewhere along the line, then another 'S' added"

You're absolutely right! It was late when I posted the picture....thats my excuse! The caption is amended.

What I actually wrote on the slide mount at the time is:

"De-Icing Unit 008 (WD). ADB975596 formerly 4 SUB DMBSO S10844S to Dia 119, on RSCO E3384, Eastleigh 1948. ADB975597 formerly 4SUB DMBSO S10987S to Dia 119, on RSCO E1060, Eastleigh 1941." I don't remember the source of the information.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake,

Ian

Some Withered Arm, ex-Southern in the 1980's but hopefully it will still count:

On 16 October 1982 Ian Allan ran a railtour, "The Atlantic Coast Express, from Waterloo to Torrington, out down the South Western, returning from Exeter via Westbury and Warminster. Locos were 33 025 and 33 027. The train was top/tailed between Barnstaple and Torrington, and also ran a return Torrington-Bideford shuttle during the day. According to Six Bells Junction (http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk) this was the last train over any part of the line between Torrington and Halwill as it ventured past Torrington onto the viaduct.

The pictures below show 33 025 on the viaduct at Torrington, 33 027 on the other end of the train working the shuttle at Bideford, and 33 025 running round at Barnstaple on the return journey (both locos did of course run round again at Exeter St Davids).

Love the photos of loco hauled EMUs - sadly, not an option these days :(

Sorry to back track here, I didn't see these when first posted. As I'm always hunting for info on the North Devon line, these are very interesting. I know the last train to Torrington itself ran in November 1982, but the fact this one goes further onto the viaduct is new to me. It looks like the train is formed of several 1st class Mk2s as well. I've seen images of 33/1s with 2x4TC sets on the line down to Meeth on 1975, this is another 'special' to add to the mix! :) (not that I've the room or stock to replicate it...)

Seeing the SUB pictures here reminds me of the time I saw an 8SUB at Woking carrying a 66 headcode, Exeter!! Sometime in 1979 ISTR. what had happened was that the up Exeter was badly delayed and terminated at Woking. the only stock available at Waterloo to form the down service was an 8SUB as far as Woking, where the lucky passengers changed to the loco hauled stock. It's one of those "wish I had a camera with me" days!

edited to add: does anyone know how to make the font size back to normal? I need stronger glasses to read this.

Roy,

In the 'reply to this topic' box you can alter the font size from 12 as above to the normal 14 as below

More great pics everyone, The pic of 33027 with ERPS headboard was taken at Eastleigh depot on an open day, the loco has a rope attached as it was being pulled by a tug of war team, or something like that, I think it was a fund raiser. Though I could be wrong as I was only young at the time. Highlight of the day was a class 40 arriving on a railtour.

As for REPs they certainly did a 100+ I remember seeing it number of times, as you could see the speedo in the cab where the units joined.

Cheers Peter.

Your right about this picture as my father took myself my brother and mum to watch it as it was several employees/managers from British Gas Southern whom he worked for at the time its one of the few memories that I have from that day other than seeing the CL07 shunter in light green. would love to see more pics from that day

love the old/new in the 3rd pic - old faithful EPB with a new-ish 488 unit in the background. was this a failed unit awaiting recovery?

Thanks keefer - not sure about the 488. Coming / going to/from Selhurst for/after attention?

I can't find my picture of the light green class 07 but here is an old scan from 1984 of the 07 needing a bit of paint. Plus a couple more from Eastleigh in 85.

Cheer Peter.
