Cant, not have any Slim Jims!

p630775062-4.jpg

33203 approaches Basingstoke station from the east. Headcode 89 is a Bristol - Portsmouth service so is this a diverted train or is the headcode a red hering?

Slide dated 29/9/84.

33205 arrives at Portsmouth & Southsea low level with a train of Mk1 coaches. Should this be headcode 89 not 79 for a Bristol - Portsmouth service.

I think 79 is the headcode for Portsmouth and Southsea as opposed to 89 (Portsmouth Harbour). A similar set of codes occured with 70 (Waterloo - P Ssea via Eastleigh) ,71,72,73 (Waterloo - P Ssea via Guildford Fast/Semi/Slow) and their corresponding (and more common) Portsmouth Harbour counterparts 80,81,82,83.

... and you can't not have no Slim Jims not working their very "own" train.

(Hmm, too many "not"s in that lot)

Anyway, the Mountfield-Northfleet Gypsum, all from 1984,

rolling through Tonbridge:

and turning round, same train giving it some welly round the curve from Tonbridge. Nice bits of complicated trackwork:

A couple of oddities.

From 1988, when the 4-REP motors were being recycled, here's a 73 with three coaches off a 4-REP, plus a 4-TC, on a regular Bournemouth/Weymouth working, somewhere between Basingstoke & Woking (sorry, my geography's a bit hazy round there):

post-6971-0-96892200-1332444504.jpg

And from 1989, a 33/1 with the 4-REPs' replacement, on a diversion via Salisbury curve, somewhere near Overton/Whitchurch area:

Hello -

The white stone is gypsum, used in the cement making process. The hoppers with the gypsum are like a smaller version of the HAA. They were privately owned by APCM/Blue Circle Cement. There are also some HAAs in the background of that Northfleet photo, which were used for coal into Northfleet, to fire the cement kilns.

Hi!

I remember seeing these trains struggling past my School at Lee on the Dartford Loop (Sidcup Line in post privatised PC), with the Crompton producing much clag!! Another very interesting train was the MGR traffic to Northfleet which normally produced either a pair of 47s or a 47 + 45 combination. Occasionally it would have a single 47 and on the odd rare occasion a single 45. Rarest of all was a 25 with about a dozen HAAs! As the 56s came on stream, the 47/45 combos ceased and what appeared to be brand new 56s (56058 onwards if I recall) were trialled, first with a 47 leading, then on their own. Large logo 56036 was a favourite.

Other trains along that line included cement from Northfleet in PCas and their bogied versions, Rugby Cement from Halling, continental freights, the Brett and Murphy aggregate sets, an ARC stone train and a vacuum braked train with stock of various parentage including clay hoods from/to Sittingbourne - there were probably more, but sometimes attempts at stuffing my head with quadratic equations and the fate of Henry VIIIs wives got in the way........

Has anyone tried to make a model of a gypsum hopper? I was looking at some of the original Hornby HAAs with a view to having a go, just need a set of drawings......oh and lots of time to make at least a dozen!

Cheers,

Graeme

Good round-up: although I don't think clay hoods ever came this way - clay wagons from the same B743xxx series but without hoods worked to Strood, as did a motley collection of 12T opens, all sheeted over, but flat sheets, not pointy hoods. The 47/45 combos must have stopped around the very early 80s I think. Came from the Notts coalfield. I never saw a 25, but then I lived the wrong side of Northfleet*, in the Medway Towns. Don't forget also more cement from APCM/Blue Circle at Swanscombe and Snodland (Holborough), and all sorts of oil traffic from Grain, including aviation fuel for Gatwick.

The Bretts and Murphys were definitely good for a bit of thrash from the 33s, especially those that came down through Strood tunnel, round the speed restriction through the station, then open up for the climb out of the station towards Cuxton. Hmm, must look out some Brett and Murphy photos. Watch this space.

*Can there be a right side of Northfleet?

Right, the Brett and Murphy sand (sea-dredged aggregate) 100T hoppers that worked out of Cliffe:

From 1984, 33061 at Hoo Junction with the Murphys:

post-6971-0-71491500-1332590450.jpg

and also 1984, accelerating away from Hoo Junction across the misty marshes, a 33/2 I think with Murphys, 10 x 100T hoppers and a single 33:

post-6971-0-11172200-1332590453.jpg

From 1985, taking the branch at Hoo Junction with Brett empties, one 33 named, looks like 33027 on the original scan:

And also 1985, two 33s on the loaded Brett train accelerating out of Dartford:

Some more from Terry, but a question - Terry unfortunately never thought to date any of these, I'm posting those which I'm pretty sure were taken in the 80s. There are quite a few in his album of stock in liveries such as Dutch, Petroleum(?) sector etc., were these 80s or 90s?

Bit off post but can anyone remember one of those discussion programmes on TV in the early days of privatisation? Apparently, the best service, in the country, according to their statistics was between Ryde and Ventnor. Much better than the service provided by Virgin. Apart from the obvious 'typo' regarding Ventnor I did have to smile at the thought that the west coast mainline could be improved by making it single track and running it with tube train hand me downs!

Hi All,

Brilliant topic, here are some of my own. Starting with some around Clapham Junction. I think they were taken some time between 83 and 85.

Headcode 24 on EPB 5122 is on a Shepperton-Kingston-Waterloo (my line as a kid). I can just remember EPB's on this line as I was about 5 when the 508's, then 455's took over. Fulwell was my local station (near Strawberry Hill depot). Thanks for the photos of CJ (and of all the others that have contributed to this thread) - good memories!
