Street Running in the USA or Canada

Well, having seen the size of some of the posteriors on that side of the pond - it probably needs to be that way for some of the bike riders!  :O  :jester:

You know crimplene was invented for something - though to be fair most "wobble-bottoms" do not ride bikes.

Jason: Can you post a link, please, mate?

Best, Pete.

There was a well-known bit of street running along 19th Street in Erie, Pennsylvania. It finished in 2001, when rail traffic was diverted. It had been a Nickel Plate mainline, eventually ending up with Norfolk Southern. Here are a couple of stills:

If you search for "erie 19th street" on Youtube, there are quite a few videos from there, including the last train, with a police escort!

Pete

Just get Youtube up (the nine little squares icon top right in Google window as you know) and type  fmnut  in the search box.  He's got well over 200 uploads.

'D-L Vine St branch' got me thinking about layouts.........    Must get that LokSound chip into my RS3.  First loco I painted in D&H Lightning Stripe in the early '70s.  Yikes that's 40 years :O

Almost street running.  Problem is that the tracks parallel the road...

Looks like the derailment happened here:

I'm guessing the house in the photo is the one just to the north of the road, which would mean the train was heading eastbound...

From the geometry of the derailment, I'd suspect the loco either climbed an ice bank on one side of a sideroad (either under the second loco or where the pickup is parked) or it hit an iced-up switch. For those that don't know, ice banks form at either side of a level crossing - the road salt and/or traffic melt the snow/ice on the road which gets sprayed to the side and re-freezes in a bank across the tracks. If the line isn't well travelled, they can get to be a fair size (and width), and tend to have relatively gentle slopes on their non-road sides. These are very alarming to hit at speed (especially in a GO train cab car which, admittedly, is a bit lighter than a loco).

I think the location on your map (Housatonic Ave and Aspetuck Ridge Road) is a bit further east than the derailment. From the overhead wires crossing the road, I'd gues it was actually where Boardman Road turns into Housatonic Ave, just past Sostak Road. This would make sense of the statement that the junction of Boardman and Housatonic might be closed.
