Mike J's N gauge workbench

Having obtained a chimneyless and elderly Farish Jinty/GP tank on e-bay for £14, I thought I'd do something LNER with it.
So after a lot of hacking and removal of the boiler, I've got this far with a slightly overscale J83. Still a bit of work to do and then a paint job, but I'm happy with the result so far. It's all plasticard, brass and bits of wire.

This is a very nice modification - is it really much overscale? It certainly captures the prototype well - you've really nailed that which is the most important thing.

Great use too for the old venerable GP tank!

Cheers,

Alan

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. I cut and shut the chassis to the correct length but the body is slightly too high because of the size of the motor. Still, I'm happy with it, especially for £14! I'm hoping to have it far enough on to be able to have it working the branch line on North of England Lines visit to Cleethorpes in May.

Just got back from Ibiza, so my apologies for not replying earlier.

Just a quick update on the progress of the J83 scratchbuild.

post-7607-0-63404700-1336311173_thumb.jpg

Although there is still some work to do on the lining, buffer beam, weathering, and brake gear, I think she should be far enough on to run on the branch line at Cleethorpes show this coming weekend.

Absolutely lovely work! The Dapol teaks really look the part with a hint of grime as well!

If you like little LNER 0-6-0 T locos in N, I have just realised that the even older vaguely Great Eastern Graham Farish 'Holden'* tank bodyshells fit absolutely perfectly on a Dapol Terrier chassis, the only surgery needed is to slice off the buffers from the terrier chassis.

*Which seem to appear in every swapmeet box of bits, or lurking on EBay.

which i find out too late as I have milled mine out to fit a pannier chassis... D'oh

Cheers gents. The boiler is nothing more than Evergreen plastic tubing with a brass tubing funnel, capped with crimped wire and stick on paper. The dome and safety valve bonnet is from smaller plastic tubing and milliput, while the safety valves and whistle are wire. I am now in the process of lining out and will post another photo when the lining is done. :)

Slow progress as we've had two shows to attend over the past two weekends. :)

The lining has been done, only the buffer beams to complete, then the brakes, sand pipes and cab hand rails.

Your lining is a beautiful job!

Cheers,

Alan

I have to agree with Alan. That lining job is fantastic! Are those transfers or did you use a lining pen?

Thanks both of you, I'm reasonably happy with the results. Your comments mean a lot as you have both inspired me with your own work posted on RMweb. There will be more to come and I'm currently weathering and detailing the rest of my motive power, in between trying to stop the rain coming through our bay window roof!

The lining is Fox transfers sheet FRH2350 white black white lining, with the outer white line painted out with black up to the central black line where a single line is required. So, a bit of a cheat really.

I would be more than reasonably happy with that! Good work with the fox transfers, you've done an excellent job of lining them up and adapting them to suit you needs!

I would like to return the inspiration comment as you and Alan are two of the main influences in my own modelling. If it wasn't for forums such as these, I think I would still be running old standard Farish items and wouldn't even be thinking about the crazy things I'm trying now!

Back on here after learning how to resize photos.

I have been busy...honest. Anyway, a bit of background to this latest build.

In the book The Power of the V2s, on the inside header page there is an excellent photo of Green Arrow hauling the 'Scotch Goods'. I'm in the process of replicating this train as closely as I can to run on The North of England Line layout. I've done the first seven vehicles (all conflats, which I'll show at a later date as these have been running for a while now), but had some trouble identifying the eighth one in the train. Prompted by my good friend Ian Harper (Silverlink), we tried the LNER forum without being able to show the photo, although I have three with this vehicle in the train at different times. After a good response jwealleans, also of this parish, came up with the goods, so to speak!

Identified as NER CCT, I realised I already had the drawings in Nick Camplings book Historic Carriage DrawingsVol 1 page 115, so I set about trying to scratch build one using plasticard and a Peco chassis. Here are the results. (please be gentle)

Plasticard base and one end shown with a peco 10 ft van for comparison.

To bring things up to date.

The van is well on now, but not finished yet. The underframe detail is missing and the final detail and weathering is still to do.

The chassis is a Peco 15ft kit, cut and shut in three places, to make the required 12ft wheelbase.

A Dapol Gresley teak going through the weathering works is shown for comparison.

This part really should be in my N gauge fiddling thread in detailing RTR, but it is a direct follow on from the CCT build, so here is the van placed in context, in the train it was built to run in. The eighth wagon of the 3.40pm down Scotch goods c1937. Coldstreamer will eventually be renumbered as Green Arrow. This is the front portion of the train that is photographed in the book Power of the V2s.

The conflats have both scratch built and modified containers, then comes the CCT, and some standard vans that have been weathered.

Still a bit to do on this 40 wagon train, but hopefully LNER fans will recognise it. Thanks for looking in.

Thanks Steve,

Good to hear from you. The GCR bogie fish van was a bit of a guestimation as far as the dimensions are concerned. I worked from a single photograph in Peter Tatlows LNER Wagons book and 'scaled' the dimensions from known sizes. I think it's close enough to be un-noticable if they are slightly wrong. I also found some very useful information and basic dimensions here. http://www.gcr-rollingstocktrust.co.uk/articles_output.asp?id=7&checkSource=sitemap

I wanted to get the build well on its way before my enthusiasm naturally began to wain, and followed a similar path with some of the B containers on the conflats.

One of my golden rules is that if it looks right....it's right.

Any news on your models? The pigeon van has been running on the back of the pickup goods for quite a few shows now. It's a lovely addition and makes a change from the standard guards van.

Best wishes,

Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the info regarding the fish van. I've got the same copy of Tatlow's book but great to see the dimensions!

I can understand the need to get things done before enthusiasm wains! For my own strictly personal projects, I completely agree with your golden rule! Anything else I'll try and design as accurately as possible!

Great to hear your pigeon van has found employment! With regard to my own models the P2 is still on hold. I'm having difficulty getting clear pictures of how some of the shapes blend in with each other and even more difficulty rendering them! I've been working on a couple of other projects in the mean time. Since you've expressed an interest, I hope you don't mind me posting them on here...
