Hi. Anyone out there a passing/great interest in all things Portuguese? There is a plan cooking here for a bit of English Electric/Alco/Bombardier action in the near future in model form.
As a taster here is the Sud Express EE class 1400 shunting cement wagons by Electrotren and Sud Express on a borrowed siding somewhere in Scotland.

Hello Si,

Oooh yes! I've long been an admirer of CP, dating back to when I (as a nipper) used to travel abroad with my folks.

In fact, I blame them for my interest in Alco's!!! Or, should that be, am grateful to?

We used to stay regularly in a small village along the south coast, somewhere long forgotten but there was a station there and regular train service. Those RSC-3's(?) and EE "class 20's" were simply superb, clattering and barking away from the stop!

Up around Lisboa, I did see a few of the "Class 50's" and the superb Alco/Bombardier's and the French built CC's were rather tasty too!

I don't know why but I never took to their coaching stock unfortunately, that's just me!

Never really been tempted to model Portuguese for some reason.

Your train looks rather good, is that 'genuine' 1400 sound or a UK recording?

Will admire your efforts from afar!

Cheers,

John E.

Hi Guys. Yes it is a Genuine 1400 recording as supplied on Loksound decoder by Sud Express with the loco. And yes DQ The wagons all run with Instanter or 3 links, although in rality they would be screw links, model form doesn't permit that as not enough length in Smiths screw links. (Which the loco has fitted) We have Alco, MLW, Alsthom, 2 EE 1400s, an EE 1800, a French 1200, a Sentinel and the fearsome Bombardier. Here are a few real shots of them!! With me on the front of Newton Le Willows built 1404 in Lisbon on the last one!

Many happy runs on various PTG tours and along the algarve. Sadly portugal, just isn't what it used to be railway wise. Where did you manage to get your 1400 from? I've been looking to get one but with no success!

Regards

Richard.

Hi Richard I can probably still get you one. Can check the price too? It is getting lower as € drops! Think all liveries still there BUT not sure if all liveries and combinations of DCC/Sound etc are still available. I think the sound fitted one was €230? Without nearer €140? Not sure. We have 'Our Man In Lisbon' who can normally track these things down. Model is exquisite! Normally CP stuff is brass and €800+ so a bit of a result.. Simon

Hi Gridwatcher.

Nice video.

I like the weathering of the cement wagons.

I´ve got a non sound version of 1432. It amazes me how they managed to squeeze sound into the body. There isn’t much space inside.

Here is a photo of a Spanish class 1300 loco or 313.xxx in new money, working for a private maintenance company. Alguazas, Murcia 18-05-12.

18 of these ALCOs were acquired by CP in the late 80s from RENFE.

They were known as the 1320s in Portugal and this is 1321 that was brought back to Spain after withdrawal in Portugal.

Spanish model company, MABAR, made a model of these about 3 to 4 years ago, at least one of the versions was in CP colours.

Looking forward to more updates.

We have 1329 by Mabar. Sound fitted. Needs CVs tweaked as it the fastest Alco in the world! The big gap in the fleet is the Asti! Everything else covered. Old Alco, MLW, Bombardier, 1400s etc even a Sentinel. Should be fun. Work progresses. Updates to follow. Si

Just found this thread. If I ever did anything other than UK, it would (probably) be CP.

On my second trip to Portugal, we could could hear EE's in the distance at night (we were staying very close to what is now the Algarve shopping centre). On the next trip, I discovered the junction station of Tunes, where the line to Lagos diverges from the main Faro-Lisbon line.

The 1400's were in charge of Faro-Lagos services and the 2 or 3 coach trains were driven with full power or full brake - or so it seemed. Much fun was had when I could escape from the family holiday! Managed to see one of the CP 50's on one trip just before they were withdrawn.

Nowadays, the line is electrified and 2600 and 5600? ply the Lisbon express with Budd designed DMU's on the local services.

Before and after rebuild, Tunes has a superb layout that would lend itself to a model.

Cheers,

Mick

Mick . Glad to have you along. It makes a change for us after Scottish Region OO! Andrew living in Lisbon helps!! We will have a layout that you can come and play on at Exhibitions. It will be 15' long, built on 3 boards. One large car will carry etc etc. The plan is a 'ficiticious' location but very much one of the west/east facing river valleys in Central Portugal. Traffic is mainly cement and grain, although some logs and mixed traffic will feature. Ironically the freight operation is relatively straight forward (if expensive!!) the passenger side is a nightmare. The only thing we have as an option is an Electrotren ex RENFE plastic pig! (And that is a no!) The Budds are gone? Coaches are like hens teeth and £400 a pop! May have a bastardised ex SNCF Inox as an option? We even have the option of building one of these too! Which I am sure would appeal to your love of all things YELLOW!!? Si

Thanks for those. the 2600s (French elex) have gone all in store/withdrawn. The Lego Alcos MLWs 1550s all gone too. stored (to Argentina?) I think the Budd units have gone too (certainly gone from the North/Douro) The 5600s are absolutely awesome. This is the sort of traction the WCML should have. We tailed a Pendolino back from Porto and it was all over the arse of the 'faster' Pendolino all the way back and we were load 10 or 11. Much more comfortable than those plastic boxes too. There are a few Portuguese images in my galleries too. MAny more in my own website areas both club and own..... www.stirlingmrc.co.uk and http://gridwatchersrailpages.weebly.com/ it's all a bt sad and so a bit like our homage to BR Blue we start a homage to CP Orange and Brown!! Hi Si,

I'm not due out there again until October - I'll make the effort to see what's on the Lagos branch traffic.

The CP website still shows some of the 0600 Budd in their stocklist - maybe they're only on the Algarve now.

http://cp.pt/cp/disp...0007b01a8c0RCRD

Having said that - it still shows the 2600 electrics. No idea how up-to-date the list is.

I've yet to do the Lisbon return - I keep promising it to myself, but it never happens!

Cheers,

Mick

You might be right re Lagos. It's the bit I have never been down to. Lisboa-Evora was a nice run until they wired it. Was and Alstom and load two or three! By the looks of this picture it is 1844 plus 3! We had a cab ride back to Lisbon. Very very noisy!! They still work on sand traffic down to the deep south every day. Simon

I have one of the Spanish liveried versions. I agree with you about the top speed. The thing that impressed me with the model were the revolving axle bearings on the outside of the bogies. I´ve never seen that done before-.I´ve got a video of it somewhere. I´ll see if I can dig it out.

I had a look at your gallery and see that there is one of the Takargo 335s in there. Will one of the new SudExpress models be featuring on the layout? Or is it a bit too modern?

Back in 2009 we went to Oporto and went up to Regua.

Here is what looks like a Sentinal shunting a couple of Transfesa registered cement wagons.

post-7244-0-65517000-1337882010_thumb.jpg

And the steam locos were still parked up at Regua depot.

Andy we have tweaked the CVs down all across the 1300 and it is fine now. The other option is to run with F6 'ON' all the time which is the 'lente' button!! Looks great and the rest of the fleet are even better the Norbrass 1960 is an absolute peach!! Si

OK.....! We all need inspiration , that is where I have always started. There is a layout in construction, there is a huge amount of stock and buildings being amassed too. Photos will follow once builders have left my house and I can get back in the railway room. S
