Welcome to the Settle & Carlisle route!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

May I give you all a warm welcome to this new sub forum about arguably Britain's most scenic mainline!

I am very well aware there are several layouts and articles/topics covering this famous route and with Andy Y.'s blessing, they all now have somewhere to live where they can be accessed with greater ease.

What can I say about the S&C?

Not much! (that's not already been said!)

I would like to invite anyone interested to participate here, please - whether it be reminiscing about trips to photograph the line or over it, maybe on a special (maybe even working over it!) or whether you model it or prefer it's fascinating history.

I guess pretty much anything goes, as long as it's railway related (& clean, of course!).

Here's hoping that this routes many friends can make use of this facility.

Cheers,

John E.

As some of you may know my S&C photos are in flickr collections at:

http://www.flickr.co...57626316966696/ The set is "Settle and Carlisle Part one", it covers Settle Junction to Ribblehead.

Others are at:

http://www.flickr.co...57626236485270/ The set is "Settle and Carlisle Dent to Kirkby Stephen".

One day I'll add Kirkby Stephen to Carlisle.

As usual I've put links to the collections rather than putting them on here as slide shows.

You asked for reminisces.

I always find an excuse to photograph the S&C when I am in the area.

Here is a couple of shots from the 1980s, showing it in different moods.

The first is of Lord Nelson leaving Shotlock Hill tunnel.

We had been waiting for some time in the field, waiting.

One minute before it passed, we had been subjected to driving rain.

The weather then cleared sufficiently for me to take the photo.

I am amazed that the shot is not blurred from camera shake, as I was shivering when I took the shot!

Here is one of D200, on a hot summers day.

I had driven over from Swaledale, via Kirkby Stephen.

I had got so hot that we cooled our feet in the waterfall, at Ais Gill Summit.

At this time all freights had been diverted away from the S&C, and the only traffic was the thrice daily DMUs.

As I sat on the grass, I heard the unmistakable sound of a class 40 some way away.

I knew it had to be D200, as all the other 40s had been withdrawn.

something like 10 minutes later it came over the summit.

Hi all,

Just beginning to research a new layout project which I hope to start sometime in the new year (after I rebuild my railway room due to flood damage!)

I have been looking at Dent station as the prototype, it will offer me a simple track plan (for a change) and scope to run a wide variety of loco's and stock as it will initially be set in the 50's-60's era but may in time creep into the 70's with blue diesels. I only have one of these, (D1733) at present so there is a long way to go.

This will be my last layout build and I simply want a 'trainspotting' layout to while away the hours just like I did when I was a lad in the 60's.

The trackwork planned is SMP with handbuilt points, this is a first for me as all my previous layouts have been Peco based so there is much research to do before I start, still undecided whether to make exhibitable or fixed, it will take up some 20ft x 3ft plus a spiral at each end to bring trains down to a lower level fiddle yard.

I suppose my first move must be to get Templot and set out my track plan to see if it fits, lets hope so!

Will keep updating as and when progress commences but any info on Dent would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Get yourself a copy of "Stations and Structures of the Settle & Carlisle Railway" by Anderson and Fox. Superb book - I got mine via Amazon about 3 months ago.

Maybe John (Allegheny1600) will be of assistance - he currently has an old P4 model, based on Dent, that he's restoring. The thread is in this S&C section.

I've gone SMP/Marcway turnouts for my S&C layout. Good quality stuff - highly recommended.

It'll be great to see your layout develop.

Best wishes,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Luckily I have that book plus a few 'picture' type books all of which have helped me decide on Dent as a suitable prototype, I will look into Marcway as an option, do you just send them a Templot plan ?

Cheers

Mike

Mike, I went for some of their standard "off the shelf" turnouts, eg. 60" left or right hand point, 54"/36" curved point etc. These fitted ok into my plan as I wasn't being too specific about radii - as long as they were as large as possible.

But if you already know what you want, having used Templot, give them a ring and they would build you whatever radii you specified. I had a long chat with 2 guys at the shop this week - the service is fantastic. Alternatively, as the guys on here have persuaded me to do for my next layout - build your own!

If you want to give Marcway a call, I'd ring 0114 2449170.

Hi Mike,

Glad you can join us! Yes, I am the nutter who is (glacially) slowly re-vamping a P4 model of Dent and it is a long drag!

This is a link to my thread if you're interested; http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/56273-dent-sc-in-p4/page__fromsearch__1

It does actually sound as though you're fairly well read on the subject so it may be me asking you questions, you never know! However, I am happy to help if I can.

I take it you know that the area was re-laid with flat bottom rail track in around 1956/57? (I think!).

Cheers for now,

John E.

Hi John,

Yes, I noticed from photo's that the main lines through Dent station are flat-bottomed and sidings remain bullhead, I did not know when the change was made so thank's for that. As I am still in the planning stage I will look into the options with regard to what is available, I intend to use SMP on the scenic section and good old Peco on the spirals and fiddle yard so a compromise may be required.

I am pretty well versed in matters 'railway' I admit, model or full size (British only) and have had more layouts over the years than I care to remember. I made the mistake of logging ALL purchases for my Bermuda Road MPD layout and realised on its completion where all my dosh was disappearing to all my life, and that was excluding stock!

Today was taken up concreting an extended base for the new railway room, so as you can imagine its quite a way off from getting started, however I will be commencing buildings construction etc in the meantime. I will post my progress as it happens. Best wishes on your project, I have already had a look through the posts.

Cheers

Mike.

So very true, Mike - so very true. It's an almost bottomless pit, but it beats spending it on cigs and booze!

Hi all,

Spent a nice day at Dent station taking photographs of the infrastructure, could not get to the 'approach' side of the station bulding as it has guests staying, should have enough for the time being to make progress, if anyone want's any photo's just let me know.

Only down side was that there was a 'possession' on for replacement of platform edging at Dent so I have some nice orange vests to add a bit of colour.

Once I get started seriously I will put the project under 'Dent' in Layout Topics. I trust that is the correct forum.

Cheers

Hi Darrell,

Lucky you!

I travelled the route regularly in the 70's when I moved from Glasgow to Nottingham and in all weathers!!!

I remember being reversed then wrong line worked for quite some distance with a class 45 in the snow, thankfully the steam heating was working!

Nice photos Dave. It all looks a bit run-down though. How things have changed over the last 20 years. Pics like this are always useful to add to the "S&C prototype collection" - good job these modern laptops have large hard-drives!

Cheers,

Hi all,

As you may be aware I will soon be starting a new layout project based on Dent station. I am in need of a floorplan for the station buildings if anyone can help. I have plans for the buildings themselves but no internal details.

Here's hoping...

Cheers

Mike

As the line is in my back yard i do get to catch most steam workings on the line & thought i would offer a couple of shots from my personal collection.

Black 5, 45305 heads north through Settle on what was a rather snowy day. It was that bad i never made it home on the motorbike & had to very slowly ride to my uncles at Horton in Ribblesdale.

Again Black 5 on the last Hadrian of the season this year heading through Gargrave station.

This is one of the best photos i've taken. It's taken me 2 years to get this photo because i've either not been in time or the weather has been bad. I had a knee operation the day before & hobbled with a camera, tripod & deck chair through a bog & up & down banking to snap this. The bonus was the princess failed on the northern leg & left the Castle to return south alone with coaches.

Here we have the 8F heading south one summers day this year with the Fellsman. I really like this engine it has such a great sound & i have a good memory of it climbing up the drag at Selside about 20mph making a real rackett & hissing away with safety valves blowing ( a fantastic sight )

Hi Chester.

This may be a difficult nut to crack in terms of getting detailed plans. A similar request was made on the Forum about a year ago:

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/49700-garsdale-station-buildings/

It would appear the detailed specifics for Garsdale aren't easy to come by! A Google search of "Garsdale station" does reveal a wealth of images that could be useful.

Even the classic book "Stations & Structures of the Settle & Carlisle Line" by Anderson & Fox doesn't have Garsdale-specific building plans.

Good luck with your search.

G'Day Gents

In a past life I was a guard at Leeds (1988-1991) and one of the perks of the job was being rostered on the Carlise,Settle route, I only ever worked 156's, including the first x2 156's to work over the line, control wanted to know how it went and wanted me to ring them when I got back to Leeds, as there was a very long wait at Carlise, I thought I could get back to Leeds quicker by travelling back to Leeds via Lancaster and Manchester, whilst waiting for my connection at Lancaster, the station supervior found me, and told me I was wanted on the phone..........control had found me !! all they wanted to know was how I had managed with x2, 156's,  no one ever said a thing, lol.

On another train working I sold the late Freddie Truman a ticket to Glasgow.
