john flann
Changing Port Bredy from GWR to ex L&SWR, SR required me to consider in what manner station buildings and structures were painted, which led me to: http://www.stationcolours.info/index.php?p=1_7_SR-SCHEDULE There the elaborate colour schemes were all specified in great detail, however I elected to represent them in a simplified manner of yellow and green. Coulor is subjective and dependent on so many factors that in my view (pun intended) as long as it looks more or less right that will suffice. I too did not consider following the specification closely was justified. Here is how I set about it. These are the basic tools, palette, brushes, water, scrap card for dabbing and absorbent paper. The brushes are mostly chisel ended, of a reasonable quality and though they may look worn are all clean, washed out and supple. The paints, acrylic bought from Walmart or similar, and the specified Stone 1a, a mix of bamboo, buttermilk and yellow ochre. When making this up I make a large quantity and endeavour to paint all the different buildings etc, at the same time. In the first image you can see fencing painted more handily on the sprue. The finished result.

john flann
I hope to fly back home on Wednesday and pending that I've been amusing myself in going back over my images of Port Bredy. These four make a nice set and that too might be of interest. It's a Down train from Weymouth with a WEY Prairie and on this occasion the stock is of a vintage nature being ex main line Ocean Liner carriages cascaded down to humbler duties. Seeing as internally they still retain some of their majesty the passengers are unlikely to complain. Once home and a visit to my local doctor undertaken, I plan to implement some ideas I have been considering for Hintock Redux as it's time that it began to look like a layout rather than a work in progress. PS, I've just noticed how awful is that coal in the bunker and that will be one of the things to get my attention pdq!

RMweb Gold nickwood Posted September 5, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 5, 2017 Just catching up John after a busy last week preparing for the Andover Show over the weekend. Very pleased to hear that you will be home soon.
john flann
Gentlemen, I am greatly obliged to you for the individual good wishes and those expressed collectively for my return home. In course of my recent experiences I have had nothing but kindness and expertise and it is much appreciated. I feel a whole lot better than I did. Here in Montana today the air is now clear of smoke from the fires, the sky is an azure blue, the sun is shining bright and there is a first nip of Fall about. I'm very fortunate to being able to enjoy it. On my return and when back to everyday matters, for Hintock Redux I have plans to develop the front LH end that include the removal of the curved siding (some will be pleased to learn), for Port Bredy some new stock is on its way from Liverpool and HTQ will be cut down in size and revert to my first ideas, Meantime more browsing of my collected images reveals this set and that I hope you will enjoy. Rest assured that even though Port Bredy is now SR territory there will always be room, as shown, for one of my favourite locos-the 3F.

john flann
May I thank you all for your good wishes for my recovery, it is proceeding, but like so many other things not as fast as I would wish-but at least most of the time it's going in the right direction and that I am thankful for. Whilst away I had all sorts of ideas for the LH end of Hintock Redux. On my return I have tried many out and of them all the images below show the general idea I have arrived at. It is, I think, both practical and of a pleasing nature that retains its essential "Hintock" character.. First, as it was, ...what it became.. and now is. You will see here all of the previous structures, except one that has found a new home on Port Bredy, plus one from Hintock Town Quay. Next, in more detail. None yet are, of course bedded in and some require more work. Of them I'm particularly pleased that I could find a new home for the Goods Shed especially as it's featured on every layout since it made its debut on Owlcombe getting on for nearly 50 years ago. AndyP and other gentlemen will also be pleased to see that curved siding going nowhere has been taken out and the siding Andy suggested taken its place. Thank you. Much better as all will agree. And, as an example of the opportunities for interesting and entertaining shots, these two...
sp1
It's nice to see that even in a layout at this stage of development you are still finding ways to improve it. Steve
Andrew P
Nice John, I never like looking at Layouts where you cant see the Valve gear of a Loco as it pulls slowly into the Platform, or when it's running around. I am glad that road to nowhere has gone at last, hahah, much better now. Take it easy, but keep the pics coming, it's wonderful to watch the Layouts re development. All the best,
Ron Solly
Hi John, I heard on Saturday that you hadn't been that flash in health but now catching up with RMweb, I see you are back on deck. Good. Hintock is superb.
RMweb Gold sjrixon Posted September 14, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 14, 2017 I agree with Andy, platform at the back so you can see across the layout and see the loco pulling into the station. I'm astounded that you are making these sweeping changes, but it looks like it's going to be worth it.
john flann
Those likes and comments are much appreciated gentlemen and as you are, I am pleased with the progress made. The trick has been to marry the new with the old and there it's proved successful. No doubt because I could use the existing buildings in what I think is a fresh and happy arrangement. What I like in particular as commented upon, is the ability to see more clearly the trains running in, the blind side of the coaches making one curious what's occurring on the other platform side, the larger station forecourt and the improved operational features in bringing the goods yard from back to front and the additional goods siding and that for van traffic. As to the particular comments: Steve, I had been for some while a little discontented with the original arrangements that emanated from the layout Melbury built long years ago and it took me some time to realize that what I had to do was, in effect, turn Hitock Redux that it had become, inside out. Fortunately it has turned out well. AndyP, quite agree, the new is such an improvement on what was there before. Ron, very pleased to hear from you and have your approval. As to me it came out of the blue and each day, well most days I'm feeling much better. I trust things are well with you and your railway empire with its operation to the fore. Scott, I'm always thinking about ways to improve things and that is I suggest, one of the joys of the hobby. Here Ive taken the opportunity to do so. john flann
Members will recall when the RH end of Port Bredy looked like this. A few minutes effort had it in this form. Then I put in place a building off Hintock Redux. And now the coal merchant John Hampton has a new location at Port Bredy. When all's done he will look quite at home. The structure, I see from looking at its back, I originally scratch built in December 2009.

john flann
Thanks gentlemen for your interest, likes and kind comments. Here's the first installment about a new working at Port Bredy in its ex L&SWR form. It is the 07.58 am from Charford via Hintock Redux. It brings workers to Hintock Redux, pupils to Hintock Grammar School and affords via the Joint Line connections at Hintock Junction and services to Bristol, Dorchester and Weymouth. The loco is an Oxford Radial, lightly weathered and with coal, crew, and discs added. It's a good runner and I'm well pleased with it. There's still work to be done at PB but it's shaping up well.
