Was really nice to have a chat yesterday Tony. (the North-east accent living near Lanark).  If I'd know about the RM award I'd have added my congratulations in person.  It occurred to me after I moved on that I should have said I was the one you sent the bundle of LMS journals to last year.  Fascinating reading.

I was a bit disappointed with the show.  Too busy for me - I'm not aggressive enough to push to the front. I'm also not too bothered by 'modern image' layouts (apologies to the diesel fans) and there weren't as many steam layouts as I'd have liked  but I did enjoy 15 minutes or so watching trains go by on Dalby Wood.

I was also disappointed with the retailers. After our chat I went round them all twice trying to find a brass wagon kit to try my hand at but there were none.  I did leave with a parkside dundas LMS guards van to keep me occupied for a few nights but it looks like I'll have to shop online for a brass kit - isn't that what the retailers are complaining about?

Graeme,

with the closure of the traditional model shop and the growth of the number or etched kits form small manufacturers, the large - mainly online retailers - focussed even more on the "pile em high and sell em cheap" approach to selling RTR products. Stocking even a small selection of kits from what is available today would be impractical as sales volumes are very small. Similarly, adding a retailer's margin to a product that is normally supplied direct from the producer would make kits even less desirable.

The hobby has rather divided itself, especially in 4mm, into two consumer sectors. The RTR buyer/collector and the model makers, who buy kits/scratch build. The former are served by the box shifters (that isn't meant to be derogatory, simply a description of what they do), the later by the Small Suppliers who design, manufacture and sell direct, as well as attending the specialist "finescale" shows, such as Scaleforums, ExpoEMs, Railex at Aylesbury, the York show, the GOG events, etc.

Usually the only way is to buy direct from the kit manufacturer, either at a show they attend or by mail order/online.

Hi Jol,

I completely agree and would add that many small suppliers are one person businesses some of whom do it in their spare time perhaps as a hobby. If they do not attend the specialist shows then the only way to purchase from them is by mail order.
