Just a picture of the bridge in situ, I wanted to make sure it fits before I glue it all together, and finish painting it. It's as well that i did, because I have had to alter the road slightly

What an inspirational thread. A layout full of atmosphere that proves that scale and gauge don't really matter when it's done right. Rather reminds me of the work of other well known modellers who could use could use ordinary materials to produce outstanding models.

The foundations have been put into day for the bridge, two bits of cardboard to be precise, the platform has been weathered and a 5" white line has been added, grass has started to grow in places. The road has had a quick spray of grey primer  and some pva brushed on in places, which when dry will painted with some watered down poster colour paint. Now here is a question, does anyone know if the ladies toilets had an entrance door on the platform, unlike the gents which just had an open entrance, or better still a picture of the station platform side, that isn't taken at a 45 degree angle so you can't really make out proper detail.

No firm info on ladies' loos, Adrian, but typically they would have a door - which was therefore easy to lock and keep the loos in good order, unlike the gents. Even more common, though, was for the ladies' loo to be accessed via the general waiting room, with a sign outside "Waiting Room and Ladies".

Thanks for that bit of information, another piece of the jigsaw in place. I have just made a start on the station building which I will post up with pictures as it progresses. Thanks again for that as all information is always welcome.

The mens toilets so I believe were still popular after the station had shut by men who had been down the pub and were in need of more than a tree on the stagger home. Possibly why there were so many near misses....Some joker at that point being the original gluer of money to the floor.

Ask stubby47 he seems to do a lot of toilet modelling, about the toilet door - hopefully he has no knowledge about money glued to the floor of mens toilets

Hi David,

It wil be early summer hopefully, all that scatter at the road edge will be used to define the edge of the road, and will be mostly under the edge of the grass bank and hedgrow which will be there one day when the sun shines and the train runs again.

I was advised someone was pulling my chain...

 

Never actually noticed any door on the men's loos - usually in too much of a rush.... but I guess a plain door to match the others on the building would suffice - nothing too obvious to help those in need...

Round the bend, and up the hill, a small section of the backscene printed onto some A4 paper as a test for size colour and perspective, when I do the finished scene under the bridge  the sides of the road will be a lot fuller with the hedgerows and banks, the bits of lichen are just temporary.

(have just noticed what looks like a hedgehog crossing the lane)

Magnificent match from photo to model, really well done.

Just a bit of detail how that corner of the backscene was done, I used one image from the top of the M25 looking west, and another one from ground level which was scaled down to fit the width of the lane. All this was done in photoshop, I had to find a point on the background scene to drop the lane into so that it gave it a vanishing point when looked at from the station and under the bridge, the lane itself is longer than the edge of the backscene so that it gives a tongue that can be curved onto the flat lane and be blended in without a join where the backscene meets the baseboard. As with everything it is a compromise between what's there in reality, and what you can actually replicate yourself. All done from my armchair using google earth. Bigerb rightly reminded me that the lanes around there were quite narrow and overgrown, so that will be modelled on the finished lane.

Adrian, that really is clever. Views through bridges onto a back scene are so difficult to do successfully.

 

That's about the best I've ever seen. Very well done.

Firstly thank you all for your comments on the view through the bridge. At the moment I am working on Brasted Station building, as this is a job that can be done in the warm, and not out in the garage. It's going to built in my prefered materials, card and plasticard and anything else that comes to hand. I am fixing the plasticard to the card with some thin double sided tape. Here are some pics of progress so far ( I suspect that Christmas will hold up progress).It will be based on Westerham Station, but with some window and door positions changed and will be slightly shorter, usual SR weatherboard resting on a brick base construction.

Hi Adrian,

I've used this technique as well but had trouble with the double sided tape coming unstuck from the card. I think this was due to the high chalk content of the mounting board I was using, hope you don't have the same problem.

Some more pictures of progress so far on Brasted Station, I am a bit concerned by Tender's experience with using double sided tape, but I have used this before, so I am keeping my fingers crossed, it would be interesting to know how long it took before it parted company. I have trimmed a length of plank from the sheet, and glued that on as a seperate item so it can be painted green before the rest of the weather boarding is fixed, and the same goes for the corner posts, door frames and the sash window frames. The weatherboarding will be cut to shape and painted cream before fixing. The brick base has been superglued to the card, and the top line of bricks was scored and then bent over and glued to the bottom of the planking to give a slight angle to the top of the bricks, (senior moment, I should have done it as a seperate strip so that the bricks lined up, I only realised when I looked at the photos, I won't tell anyone if you won't).
