62440
From circumstantial evidence, I think it was, Bill. But a question I never thought of until now was ... did Galashiels have a diesel shunter right up to the last? The Gala shunter certainly worked the last Kelso freight in March 1968, but the Hawick pilot cleared out the yard at Kelso a week later. ... over to RMweb for the answer. I hope! Bruce. 'CHARD
Fascinating to see the way a routine swap put D8606 in place for the last rites. We have of course, courtesy of Bruce, seen the back-working, the 64B Class 25 dragging a Clayton through Gorebridge on Saturday afternoon. http://www.railbrit....te.php?id=17882 The caption also mentions the Gala shunter, but whether it applied as late as December '68 is outwith my ken! Were there not some really sharp curves in the goods yard at Kelso which would have precluded a main line loco shunting? (but obviously the wagons must have been disposed in such a way that a Clayton could do the final clear-out - or perhaps nobody was bothered if the track got spread a bit). Once the Kelso duty ceased it's difficult to imagine what an 08 could usefully have done. Bill Edited November 24, 2012 by Bill Jamieson
'CHARD
Clayton at Kelso joins the 'Waverley's most wanted' list... I expect one was there on the same weekend that West Coast diversions brought Class 50s to the main line.
Hawick_1987
Is there any information on the pilot that went ahead of the Lytham St. Anne's on the 5th January? Slightly off-topic too, but does anyone have any further information on the demolition locomotive/convoy that left Hawick in April 1971? Bill Jamieson
The loco involved was D8606 - David Spaven gives a detailed account of what happened in his recent book "Waverley Route". Just noticed this auspicious post, I think it's appropriate to say Welcome Aboard! The ignominious last rites as performed by D8606 are stuff of legend. RailScot has many references, and here is one such: http://www.railbrit....te.php?id=27773 And a very full one here: http://www.railbrit.co.uk/imageenlarge/imagecomplete.php?id=21882 Edited November 28, 2012 by 'CHARD

'CHARD
The penultimate 1S65 "Bonzai Waverley" - Kenneth Gray had ambitioiusly selected Kershopefoot to capture this working from the Border crossing. Luckily for observers of this thread, the light held out to provide twilight over the Peak, anonymous in the caption, but recorded in the signalbox records, I imagine... http://www.railbrit.co.uk/imageenlarge/imagecomplete.php?id=41294
'CHARD
The penultimate weekend? D5312 and a fine consist on the 1300 with head traffic of repute: http://www.railbrit....te.php?id=41300 There would only be one more Saturday 1300 departure from the Citadel after this. 'CHARD
Then D188 shall be modelled forthwith. Excellent (and I have a suitable candidate to boot!) !!! 'CHARD
Mate, I should've been there with you; I was and am in spirit. On the one hand I'm cursing the fact my other half has to work the weekend on 'essential projects,' but on the other I'm not sorry I missed sharing the back of the motor with a certain mascot who'd been a-rolling in shall we say, rural substances

Bill Jamieson
I hope everyone observed a two minute silence at 02.38 this morning to mark the arrival of D8606 back at Hawick from Newcastleton. I did, barring any snoring of course. Bill

62440
My apologies if I've posted this photograph before. This is recorded in the signalbox register as 0002 on 6 January. The last train just on the move. I hung a mike out of my bedroom window and here's the link to the recording (an .aiff file) below. Hopefully, it'll work! Remember this was 1969, a reel to reel at 15/16 inch per second and around 300 yards from Lochpark south of Hawick. It's definitely lo-fi. 'CHARD
60's flanks streaked with water! No, I don't believe we've seen that before. I certainly hadn't had the pleasure of the recording. Extremely atmospheric, to those of us who can picture exactly what's unfolding. At 1.51, towards the end, Driver Fleming of 64B sounds 60's two tone horn. I wonder whereabouts the train was at that point....
