The holidays have begun at my college so family commitments aside I'm hoping to crack on before the next term begins. More updates to follow as and when.

Had another session working on the layout this afternoon and made some further progress;

It was warm enough to undercoat the structures which form the back of the layout;

Completed the installation of the inspection pits and decided to prime them before finishing work;

After all this has dried I can move on and coat it with Flannel Grey gloss; colours used on our other exhibition layouts. Although I am working in a double garage there just isn't room and more importantly sufficient worksurface to do the sky blue MDF yet. After that everything can be fixed into position which provides greater protection for fragile structures such as the lighting towers and the buildings.

Hi Richard,

Some good progress of late....very interesting...I like to see the step by step pictures you post...tells the whole story.

I'd forgotten you were an Alex supporter, I seem to remember you have roots in Crewe like I did....but not in the 50s and 60s of course.??

Rgds....Bob

Correct Bob, we are both from Crewe. I have watched the Alex since 1982 (the year before Dario Gradi arrived) and bought my first season ticket following the first appearance at Wembley in 1992. Its clearly contagious as my oldest son and 2 nephews also have season tickets this year so that makes at least 4 of us at home games....

Having done my share of entertaining over Christmas, including cooking dinner for 9 on Christmas Day, I'm able to spend some time in the garage plugging away.  Today's tasks included painting;

The creamy colour Iused for the inspection pits was just too bright so I used some Doc O'Brien weathering powders to tone it all down

This is a mixture of Grimy Black, Grungy Grey and Dirty Brown

The first coat of Flannel grey has been applied to the upright woodwork too.

Off to join the other NW members of WFRM in The Fly and Loaf in Liverpool shortly.

Did you mean to say the Alex supporter there Bob ? :P

Hi Dave,

Is it Birkenhead Academicals for you then...?

Best wishes for 2013.

Bob.

Hi Richard,

I was a West End Boy......I was delivered ex works in '48......just 50 metres from the wall of the Erecting Shop..Grandad was a motion fitter inside......oily rags for nappies.!!

Best wishes for 2013 to you too.

Bob.

It has been a stop-start business with more stop than start. However, I'm on a bit of a roll at the moment and the weather has been favourable for modelling in my garage so long may that continue.  Thanks for all the interest; we're off to this locality tomorrow to spend New Year with friends. More updates when I get back - maybe the gloss will have dried by then..........

Just discovered an amazing source of pictures of this location - and lots of other spots too.

In Flickr there are various groups where railway enthusiasts have shared images. At Knottingley there are close to 200 shots including many taken at ground level depicting the various roads and shed interiors. I suspect that at least 1 contributor must work there as he even has a picture of the depot CCTV monitor feed.

I have searched Flickr before and not obtained any of these shots.

Back from our New Year away trip and it was straight back into action;

2 coats of B&Q Matt Sky Blue Emulsion

May require a third, either way it will get a coat of varnish to seal and protect.

Concentrated on reinforcing all the board edges by soldering the rails to PCB strips araldited a few days ago

Once it has been assembled I need to redraw the the shells of the WRD/TMD sheds to account for the curve. This gadget was acquired from Aldi a while back and might be the way to do it. Or draw it on graph paper. Or calculate the radius of the curve by measuring from the start of the curve into the corner behind.

More work planned over the weekend before I return to teaching next week. Happy New Year one and all.

Another day working on the layout and finally all the bits can be assembled together;

Both fiddle yards are attached for the first time which took an inordinate amount of time and I'm still not happy with the joint at the A end; but it can be fettled one way or another.

Some good progress over Chistmas....you must be well pleased.

Bob.

Thanks for all the encouraging words.

I have spent the day in the company of my nephew who is as keen as mustard. Together we gapped all the PCB strips at the edges and continuity tested. Then we remeasured all the buidlings and reduced them by 60mm in length to allow for the curve of the backscene and maintain the fronts in the correct alignment. Then we wired in the express models towers to a 12v supply. After a good clean it was time to position some stock and drive a few trains. Finally we took these images.

I need to fault find a non responding Tortoise point motor and then ballasting might be in order.

To add variety I decided to pick up work on some of the buildings built quite some time ago. The generator room now has a roof, detailing was done with laminations of plasticard for the rectangular vents whilst the 2 chimneys are made from paper fasteners with top hat bearings. All have been primed, together with a knightwing portakabin;

post-816-0-16304000-1357586681_thumb.gif

The door frames are etches supplied by Geoff Taylor and are mounted on ridged plasticard to reproduce the louvres on the real thing. On the right is a door ruined by my impatience; the primer hadn't completely cured and the next layer was far too thick. Dipping the door next to it in Phoenix superstrip salvaged it but the first was too far gone. I also primed a set of knightwing accessories PM101 with 60 crates, barrels and sacks.

Due to interest in the time period modelled and the location I have followed this thread for a while and the standard of modelling and attention to getting things right really does you credit. It's shows in the model.

cheers,

Lukasz
