Night time rail shots

I've not seen this type of photography done much before, but with the onset of some of the newer DSLR cameras I've found it possible to "stop" moving trains at some stations. It opens up a new area of railway movements which you tend not to see. Is it worth it? I think so. . .

Apologies for not including info on the trains, i've not had time to research what they are.

Cheers

Tim

Dave, it's the Canon 1dx :imsohappy: , but yours should cope almost as well :)

I was using a bog standard 85mm F1.8 lens for most last night, but the Freightliner 66 going away shot was with the F5.6 lens, but ISO 51,200.

Cheers

I was thinking this myself recently, it does open up new possibilities for sure. Obviously though you're limited by your equipment and also how fast the train is going, stand at your local suburban station shooting 100mph express trains going by and you won't have much success!

I have a 5D mk2, not as good as the 1-series Canons at high ISO but should be good enough to have a go at this, I'll post how I get on.

Taken at Brighton station on Christmas eve in 2002 - amazing to think many of the 377's are now ten years old!

{Pedant mode on}

But thats a 375!

{pedant mode off}

Yes I know the 375/3xx that Southern use were formerly 375/3xx when they had tightlock couplings as built.

That is a rather nice picture.
