Night time rail shots

Old-school film+tripod+hope for the best shot of moving train at night (well, there's still a bit of light in the sky). Reading 1986. Whoosh goes the trail of lights. You can also see the signal going back from green to red.

I'm guilty of a little cross posting with this one! But strictly speaking it should have only been in here - the Carriage sheds at Preston Park looking southwards towards Brighton Station.  Its a great spot to watch that 09 at work:

The fact that the shutter doors don't go down to the floor makes it look like the whole shed building is hovering a few inches off the ground!

Another old-school effort, this time Strood, 1985. And yes, there's a moving train in this one: while the 4-CEP (for Tonbridge? odd headcode 59) sits in the side platform, there's an explosion of sparks in the centre, and the faint reddish line at the roof level of the 4-CEP is from a headcode box. I think it was a 73 with a couple of parcel vans, which ran round in that platform. Certainly not enough light for a string of coaches.

Couple of nasty bits of blue internal lens flare though. One of the hazards of long exposures with very bright point sources of light.

And while we're here, I may have posted this before, but it fits nicely here. 4-CEP on the move, with the brighter white of the fluorescent carriage lights contrasting with the orangey tungsten lights of the headcode box, and the splashes of arcing from the 3rd rail. 1984, bottom of Sole Street bank.

And the same location, 2nd attempt a few weeks later. You can see Rochester Bridge in the background, far right, and a speed restriction sign below the train:

One by old fashined 'gas power' (colour neg 200ASA)  with no tripod - Lean against something solid, set self timer to minimum setting, elbows in tight, take a deep breath, press the shutter release gently and sometimes they come out ok!

We were only there at that unearthly time because we about to depart on the marathon 'Penzance Fryer' with  D200

  • 1 month later...

Some from the London Underground from yesterday.  Armed with a new toy, it would have been rude not to see how it fared with no natural light...

A pair from Edgware Road first:

Now, I'm not sure if it's strictly right for the topic, but there's no sun down on the deep-level stations so it almost counts!  Piccadilly Circus for starters:

And, to finish, Mornington Crescent!

A few more from the tube...  Metropolitan Railway "Jubilee" carriage no.353 was moved by a pair of battery locos yesterday evening.  It really is an astonishing restoration job on it when you view it close-up!

After reversal at Mansion House, the convoy is seen at Gloucester Road, with the original destination indicator board deliberately in shot.

There are a few more from elsewhere on the tube, while I had some time to kill.  I'll deal with them later. :)
