Coach bogie
I suspect we will see some Toplights very soon to run behind the new Star ! I find it highly unlikely for all the reasons outlined many times previously. A Hornby revamp of the existing 1925 stock with all the extra diagrams far more likely as the stock remained largely intact until the mid 1960's, allowing for livery variants. In contrast the toplights, bore little resemblance to the original by BR days, reducing or presenting a livery nightmare, especially for blood/custard & maroon versions. Mike Wiltshire I agree wholeheartedly with Mike on this (as I said in the speculating game for 2013 announcements - the Toplights would be a manufacturers nightmare with changes to both appearance and livery taking place over the years). Revamping, or totally re-tooling, the existing 'almost Collett' stock would I think be a far better and much simpler proposition for Hornby.

I for one wouldn't be happy with a warmed over revamp of this Collett stock.I would rather have a total retooling option to standards shown with the other new coaches in their range. I agree that the toplights will be a challenge but Hornby might fancy it. As an aside heres a Wills kitbuilt example thats come up on ebay . http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kitbuilt-Wills-GWR-Star-Class-4-6-0-No-4061-Glastonbury-Abbey-BR-Green-Livery-/380545558728?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123 I expect quite a few kits to start appearing now just like the 42/52/72xx ones after their Hornby announcement. RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted December 31, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 31, 2012 (edited) Looking again at the Hornby pictures the front ends all look the same from a side on view.Is this correct or will there be a variation on the finished model like the Castle. For example Here is the 4018 Knight of the Grand Cross on an undated photo. Will the Hornby model be like this ? This photo was also posted by Miss P on page 1 under 'elbow type'. Another look on the internet [Google images] finds 4054 Princess Charlotte minus her plates but showing a different front end similar the Castles like 5011 with a scalloped 'vauxhall' type.Heres 4054 in better days. There are many photos of Stars on this website, http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/index.htm including this one from early BR days http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrls145.htm also at Leamington . http://www.steampicturelibrary.com/star_class_no_4054_princess_charlotte/print/8306807.html http://www.steampicturelibrary.com/star_class_no_4054_princess_charlotte/print/8306805.html Edited January 2, 2013 by gwrrob
Coach bogie
I assume the Hornby image is the usual photoshop images until they have something 'real' to photograph. It has happened before. Pre castle release, all the images used the same inside cylinder casing, but were correct on release. Both Lode Star and 4018 retailed the original 'box' inside cylinder casing and Hornby would open themselves up many pages of critisism on this site if they got it wrong. The fact that they have chosen elbow piped engines, give confidence that they know what they are doing. The shot of 4018 is at Leamington Spa, though I am curious why it is reversing wrong line. With shirtbutton emblem on the tender I assume it is taken 1938 onwards during its' Tyseley years. Mike Wiltshire
buffalo
As Mike says, they're not photos of real models so, hopefully, they'll get it right. The difference was mentioned a couple of times on the previous page, e.g.: ... Inside cylinders front cover: 'square box' on 4000-20, the remainder 'scalloped'. ... Nick EDIT: a minor correction, that should be 4001-20. North Star (originally No 40, renumbered 4000 in December 2012), when originally built as an Atlantic had the square cover as well as square drop in the running plate in front of the cylinders. When rebuilt as a 4-6-0 with curved drops in November 1909, Star production had already adopted the scalloped cover a few months earlier, so it was fitted with this later pattern. It retained this throughout its life as a Star and later, from 1929, as a Castle. Edited December 31, 2012 by buffalo

RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted January 2, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2013 One thing that I haven't mentioned is the excellent service provided by Elaine Arthurs at the library at Steam Museum. http://www.steampicturelibrary.com/star_class_locomotives/photo/91848.html If you email her , she will look up photos of any of the class plus other locos too and post to the Steam picture library website. earthurs@swindon.gov.uk I thought 4014 was a goer until I saw its withdrawal date.

Miss Prism
Thanks for the facebook reference. I think the only substantial remaining error now is the fat Castle chimney. Needs to have the thinner one, which Hornby could then use for its new Hall.
Matabiau
The only commercially available pre-war GWR RTR stock are the Bachmann Colletts, Hornby Colletts, Hornby Centenaries and Hornby Clerestories. The Bachmann Colletts are reasonable but not flush glazed and are showing their age, particularly when compared with Hornby's latest coaching stock such as the Hawksworths. The Hornby Colletts, Centenaries and Clerestories are little more than toys, the first being part of the Railroad collection. Both are very old mouldings with a modern paint job. The Hornby chocolate and cream Hawksworths will look very nice behind your Star but as has been discussed here in the past were only briefly painted in this colour scheme as they were delivered in the main after nationalisation and as such in crimson and cream. Most of the photos of GWR Stars I have seen are pulling trains composed of Hornby type Colletts and various clerestory coaches. Does anyone know how to get hold of replacement ends or gangways for the Hornby Colletts? I have bought a couple to go behind my future Star but hope to make some improvements before it arrives. RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted January 9, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2013 I spoke with Geoff Davies at Steam today as I was ordering 4003 Lode Star.I was order number 70 out of the 1000 limited edition. The website had problems over the Christmas/new year period so if like me you ordered online the system might not have registered your order.Ring to make sure if this is the case. One thing Geoff did say is that late February is a good probability for Hornby to deliver them.

The picture on MREmag looks like a photograph of that decorated model and not a mock-up. Hopefully the Steam Museum got to see it too!
