Thomas
Long before Springs Branch became a component recovery depot for EWS, always the odd one or two withdrawn locos on the shed. 47122, 27 October 1988 And withdrawn DMUs at Queens Road sidings Manchester, unlikely to run again. 'CHARD
The Strathclyde 101 is just being shunted into position for working the last train of the night to Whifflet I think.
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted December 28, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 28, 2012 A few snaps from a little further south... Eastleigh Accident damaged 47215 dumped in Eastleigh yard, in about 1993. The same fate befell 33009 - at Meldon. It was dumped at the back of the works at about the same time. Not sure where this incident took place, but this burned out VEP driving trailer was certainly beyond redemption. Old Oak Common An added bonus at the Old Oak Common open day in the early 1990s, was the large number of withdrawn class 47s (amongst other things) dotted around the site. 47533 clearly shows the accident damage it sustained - I believe - at Reading, when it collided with 47472. Vin
Hi Big Jim, I think the peak line up photos are of Tinsley yard at the bottom of the secondary yard. I remember it was a hell of a walk from the TMD. Regards Vin
dvdlcs
And withdrawn DMUs at Queens Road sidings Manchester, unlikely to run again. img308.jpg Tom The DMU nearest the camera appears to be EXP DMU 352. The 'experiment' was making each car in the power twin single engined as a fuel/cost saving measure. One of the few Class 104s that were painted blue/grey. The horizontal stripe on the cab end would be black. Hope this helps, David.
Vin
Hi All, My mistake, what originally looked like Tinsley secondary yard is in fact Toton in 1987. The yard lamps in distance made me change my mind. Also some digging through some old logs gave me the year. Keep up the great pictures. Vin

PatB
What's the function of the "mouth" that's been gas-axed into several of the locos? Is it just a quick way of preparing the cab sections for lifting or is there some specific componentry or material in that area requiring removal early in the dismantling process like, for example, electrical gear with a high copper content? I note that many of the "bonneted" classes have their nose hatches open, suggesting that something has been lifted out at an early stage.
Baby Deltic
What's the function of the "mouth" that's been gas-axed into several of the locos? Is it just a quick way of preparing the cab sections for lifting or is there some specific componentry or material in that area requiring removal early in the dismantling process like, for example, electrical gear with a high copper content? I note that many of the "bonneted" classes have their nose hatches open, suggesting that something has been lifted out at an early stage. The nose areas contain air reserviors and traction motor blowers on most of the classes so there probably isn't much of value in there. I think roof and nose hatches were opened during the component recovery phase prior to cutting. Sometimes sections of body would be cut to gain easier access to certain components for removal. Often the first area to be 'gas axed' was around the number. The flame cut number panels were mainly sold off to enthusiasts.
Thomas
Not BR blue but a sad picture to add to the list. A Fowler 0-4-0 waiting its fate at a scrapyard at St Helens Junction, 26 January 1987.

Fat Controller
Old Oak Common, October 1973. scan0001 (2).jpg Some of these went to Cohen's scrapyard, on the Morriston (MR) branch; the following summer to this photo being taken, I was working at the adjacent BSC Landore Foundry, and went along for a look at them. I still have, somewhere, a plastic notice detailing the terms of travel and supplements due for using the Pullman.
jessy1692
Evening all, as threatened, heres some of my Dads pics form a holiday down the south west in 74 (i think) & some claytons from a spotting trip north over the border in 75. and the RTC one at Derby Not the best quality but i think it adds a little bit to the shots from the time, would have been nice to have been around then! Great thread so lets see if we can keep this going. Cheers James
talisman56
A few snaps from a little further south... Eastleigh VEP.jpg Not sure where this incident took place, but this burned out VEP driving trailer was certainly beyond redemption. I was going to suggest a victim of the Effingham Junction Depot fire but that was well pre-NSE days...
