LMS 54ft non corridor coaches

Three sources of coach sides/kits come to my mind Ian:

Comet, 247 Developments and Mousa Models(Bill Bedford).  Unfortunately, none of the sites show the diagrams you are asking about.  No harm in asking them though.

If anyone knows the answer it will be Coachman, aka Larry Goddard.

Hi all

is anyone aware of a kit or sides for one of the LMS's 54ft suburban coaches please, the brake 3rd is Diag 1770/1771? I should have added in 4mm scale

Ian

Modelling the LT&SR now Ian? ;-} The diagram is in the LMS carriage drawing book. You might be able to bash them from the ratio Midland suburban kits.....

No Andy

David Jenkinson built an O gauge set of suburban coaches for Inkerman St using 2 57ft and 1 54ft coach just to have something different than a standard set of 57 footers and I fancied doing the same, some 54ft coaches were built for general service not just the LT&S

David Jenkinson built many coaches (7mm) from scratch using plastic sheet/strip.  His book explains:  http://britishrailwaybooks.co.uk/books/ISBN/1874103321.php

Someone, perhaps on this thread, said that they had seen some of these coaches at first hand and that they had seriously deteriorated over the years.

Strange that in the three websites I list above, which must cover practically every LMS diagram produced, there are no 54 footers.

The Dapol, nee Airfix, suburbans could be a useful source of raw material.  I am half remembering that somebody modelled Grays many years ago and cut up those coaches to make 54 footers.  If I had three hours plus to spare I would happily trawl through the declining years of the Model Railway Constructor where ISTR it was all written down.

The Cathcart and later LT& SR coaches (aka Period II) might be do-able from the Dapol 57' coaches - not sure where else the 54@ coaches went

If you are modelling pre 55 then you could always use the Bain Midland coaches (ex Slaters)  - which I think David White cut down to 54' in O gauge. Else if you are looking for really different stock the ex L&Y coaches from Wizard may be an idea

Hi Barry

According to David Jenkinson in MRJ 15 there were some 54ft coaches built for general use with 6 compartments, I have been in touch with Worsley Works and he is willing to etch a pair of sides for these coaches in due course.

Hi Ian

he does mention these in the LMS Coaches book - Thirds Diag 1768 - some at 9' one and a half" wide and others at 9' 3" wide

The Bts of D1770/1771  included some driver trailers as well being potentially of two widths.

All of these were panelled so the Dapol body is no use at all - and I don't think you can cut a set of comet sides to suit so the worsley works solution looks good - have you a suitable drawing?

Hi Barry

I have the drawing from the article in MRJ(nos 15,18 and 22) and there is a drawing in the LMS coaches book, but, Allan of Worsley works already has the relevent drawings, incidentally DJ mentions in the MRJ that the lot no for the Brake 3rds was placed in D1770 which was the 7 compt one when the diagram of the 6 compt one was D1771.
