I found that A5.5 turnouts worked fine for me. Alternatively if you have templot try using a 12ft straight switch with a 1:6 crossing (if you want to lay it out yourself I can give you the details).

Especially as my personal shopper has hopefully bought things on my behalf at Ally Pally today...

I could do with one of those myself.I could get them to go into Ann Summers for me. ;) What you bought then Chris ?

I used to be worried about your ways Rob, what with that GWR fetish, but now with the 'Ann Summers' bit you have me well troubled!

Hopefully Damian has found the C&L stand for some track and a point kit, and some different wheels for my first few wagons....no Spams...well not just yet.

Guest 40-something

Im taking my first tentative steps in the senior scale too.  Being an occasional operator on St Marnock Engine Shed first woke me up to 7mm scale.  Over the past while I've hankered over Parkside 7mm kits and I recently bought a mineral wagon kit, and some track on ebay and....  well not yet but I'd like to do up an old Big Big Hymek with a new chassis etc as offered by PRMP.  I did toy with going for a Lima 33 conversion to a 27 but the width/length issue would annoy me.

In addition to St Marnock, Ian Futers Fisherrow Yard had me transfixed at Model Rail Scotland this year, spent ages watching it.

So a small shunting layout is forming itself in my grey matter, using mostly Parkside Kits and the Dapol 08 (if it turns out good, but looks like it will from the CADs).  Trackwork will be Peco.

Been playing with AnyRail tonight just to work through the idea in my head. Started using the C&L library for track but could only find straight left and right points. I wanted curved and Y. After struggling through I decided to look at the PECO templates. I won't be using these for the real line but it gave me a chance to play. What I really want is a nice flowing S to the mainline - this is as close as I could get after a few hours with a new program. (I suspect I'll have to try and master Templot for the real thing)

Still not happy with the loop length (I want to be able to run round a 3' long train), but the attached image should give a rough idea as to the type of thing I'm planning...

I have in mind buildings from the Boscarne / Wenford area and there will be an old style B&W wharf somewhere.

PS - I know I've used some Hornby 00 buildings to populate the layout but you get the idea...!

Chris,

Looks a bit "Time Saverish"  - which means, usually, operating fun. If I was you I'd move the turnout on the far right to the right to increase loop size (because you've got the fiddleyard off to the right).

Best, Pete.

You should be alright on that plan. If the two turnouts for the loop are either side of the middle board, even losing a little to allow clearance you should be able to run around a 40-42inch train. With 4ft for the fy and allowing for a least a tank loco or an 08 (depending on your inclination) that is about as long as you can manage.  2 coaches (unless you go for 4 or 6 wheelers) or 7 short wagons.

Looks a good plan.

Hi Chris

How about removing the point at right end of the loop and use a traverser in the fiddle yard as the second point of the loop of scene.

Hi Pete

I've had similar thoughts on the right hand point - will probably be shifted about 6" to the right. You are probably right about the Timesaver thing - I suspect there only a limited number of variations to be had with a loop and 4 more points!

I like the track plan, but I'm not clear what the size /footprint will be? (Apologies if I missed this from the thread already)

Dougal.

Father!

Each of the grid squares is 1' or 305mm. Each board has started at 4' x 3' (1220mm x 915mm) but I may knock the depth back by 3-4".

Thanks Don

It took a few iterations to get the balance of headshunt, loop and FY capacities about even but it looks like the plan is possible. Normal passenger traffic is likely to be just a single coach but I wanted to size things to give me the potential to run round two, or one and a few vans. On the freight side it will be a Beattie Well Tank bringing up traffic from the 'clay line' and placing them in the exchange siding for departure. The line marked 'siding' could hold a coach whilst the train engine wanders off on a freight run or does some shunting. Essentially the start will probably be the BWT, something like an O2 Tank, a single coach and a variety of four wheel wagons.

Morning Terry

I did play with using the FY as a replacement point and doing a mixture of shortening the RHS scenic section and extending the loop tracks through to the scenic break.

What I've not said so far is that the track on my plan isn't all flat... the clay line will drop away from the loop and enter the FY at a lower level. That gives me a road with buildings on the RHS that climbs up towards the rear. Similar to Ditchling Green but Cornish!

Ok so, I think that makes it 16 foot by 3 foot??

Dougal

To be sure Father.

The room it will go in is about 17' long and for once I'd like to build a layout that can be put up in its entirety at home and operated! For a change this layout will be predominantly designed to be a home layout rather than an exhibition layout that spends 99% of its time packed up. It will be designed to be operated from the front as the rear will be placed tight up against a wall. It may yet end up a smidge narrower, say 2'9", as that makes reaching over easier.

Have to have a re think!

In terms of buildings, these are what I have in mind at the moment:

Station platform to be either open timber or <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=grogley+halt&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=b1wDurI9pFt7gM&tbnid=2BIZLuchxTbiKM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CORNWALL-GROGLEY-HALT-RAOLWAY-STATION-/251130665924&ei=meROUd-vJ-rU0QWsp4HoCQ&bvm=bv.44158598,d.d2k&psig=AFQjCNHrmMN8V1hK2OzNbezOG-fCaPCrUA&ust=1364211120511879">concrete frames</a> like the one at <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=grogley+halt&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=C9VsDynwwvKN2M&tbnid=Kz6oe5x_LlowYM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http://www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/cornwall-railway-gallery--4-branches-north-and-east.html&ei=P-ROUa_8C4LL0AXgz4GwAg&bvm=bv.44158598,d.d2k&psig=AFQjCNHrmMN8V1hK2OzNbezOG-fCaPCrUA&ust=1364211120511879">Grogley Halt </a></p>
