RMweb Gold BMacdermott Posted May 2, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2013 Results – Wishlist Poll 2013 The Poll Team is delighted to let you have the results of the MREmag & RMweb Wishlist Poll 2013. We would like to extend our gratitude to Phil Parker (MREmag) and Andy York (RMweb) for all their help and support. Andy organises the ‘computerised aspects’ of The Poll, and has once again run it ‘right on time’ and sent the raw results even earlier than expected! We also thank David Baverstock (Chairman, N Gauge Society) and Simon Bendall for their ‘specialist input’ this year. From the positive comments we have had, that input has been highly valued. Of course, a poll wouldn’t be a poll without you, the voters. We had slightly more 00 voters and a significantly higher number of N voters this year. The vast majority of you voted ‘legitimately’, but – sad to say – we noted very early on that there were orchestrated and unorchestrated attempts to skew the votes. Those attempts were thwarted. Naturally, you wouldn’t expect us to go into the process employed, so we will not comment further. We hope you all enjoy the findings. Let’s look forward to many more superb models such as we have seen recently! We have attached the full results in five PDFs – but thought some of you may just like to see the summaries as below. The items in bold type feature in The Top 50s. The left hand column shows the number of votes. (Please note that this topic may be re-positioned – it is posted here with permission from Andy York while he is absent.) Ozexpatriate
Brian, thanks for posting these. It's nice to see non-locomtive items in 5 of the top 12 00 spots, including the top spot! That is evidence of the sensibility in not rationing votes. It's also intersting to see how quickly the votes fall away. The top spot has almost twice as many votes as the 50th spot. Also non-powered rolling stock comes in strongly around the 21st spot.I think this poll does create a picture of potential products that would be exciting to model railway enthusiasts. (It is not exhaustive of course, but that is not it's purpose.)Thanks for also posting the PDFs with a detailed breakdown. (Now posted down this page - the old link is dead.) It's interesting to see an ever so slightly younger age profile for N gauge modellers, but a very similar distribution for preferred era to model. RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted May 3, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 3, 2013 Quite a strong showing from a number of SR locomotives I'm interested in, so hopefully one or more will emerge in the next year or two But Bulleid stock seems less popular this year, and the 4TCs and REPs are quite a way down the lists so not much hope for those I fear

Karhedron
A strong showing for the Swindon cross country DMU Hopefully its time has come? Popular in both 00 and N gauge. Dapol have a new 64' DMU chassis from their 121/122 in N gauge and the 00 gauge version is on the way. Hopefully a 120 is not beyond the realms of possibility. Littlethorpe
I'm still perplexed that the Standard Class 4 4-6-0 (75000-75079) wasn't in the N Gauge poll. I think that it would have been one of the top items & would certainly have been my first choice. If there has already been an explanation why it wasn't included then please accept my apologies but otherwise I would love to know why it was excluded. phil gollin
. First, a big "thank-you". For the "00" poll ; Second, what a peculiar set of results (that is compared with last year), e.g. what happened to the 4-COR and 2-HAL vote ? As a Southern Region fan, I appreciate the steam loco results (even if they slightly confuse me). Such things as a decent crane model and working level crossings seem excellent ideas (although likely to be more expensive to produce than most people would "like"). Different companies gates can be catered for by separate mouldings. The two main points seem to be the big drop-off after the 240/237 mark (to a continual decline) and the remarkable results for the two highest scorers. Interesting ( 4-COR forever ) . For the "00" poll ; Second, what a peculiar set of results (that is compared with last year), e.g. what happened to the 4-COR and 2-HAL vote ? Hello Phil Many thanks for your appreciation. The results last year were: 154 - 2 Bil (Top EMU) (now made by Hornby) 128 - 4 COR (2nd EMU) 114 - 2 HAL (5th EMU) This year's results are: 155 - 4 COR (Top EMU) 128 - 2 Hal (3rd EMU) Bear in mind that numerous items were deleted from The Poll compared to 2012 (about 35 items made; numerous extremely low polling items deleted) and about 100 new items went in. This is bound to have an effect. Overall though, much of what was at the top is still at the top, and much of which was at the bottom is still at the bottom. Brian (on behalf of The Poll Team) Yes, but last year the 4-COR and 2-HAL were "near" the top, this year because there was a biggish group WELL OUT IN FRONT in terms of votes, they are just in the leaders of the follow-ons. The big "winners" this year really did score well compared with last year. As I said, I can't complain about the Southern Region steam results. . Forester
At last the SR D, D1, E1, L, L1 4-4-0 s are beginning to be taken seriously. But why does the original Merchant Navy never quite break free of the pack and get some attention? Every year, just when its turn seems to have come, something else rises up and overshadows it. Hello Phil Just taking my 'Poll Team hat' off for a moment and speaking personally, I would very much like to see the 4 COR. I have very fond memories of seeing them during train-spotting trips to Vauxhall in the late 50s/early 60s. OK - 'hat' back on now.... I just did a quick count from top-to-bottom (ignoring number of votes and how many items polled the same number etc) and found: 4 COR - At 94 this year (117 last year) 2 Hal - At 190 this year (188 last year) Please note that 94 and 190 are not the same as 94th and 190th! This still puts them in the 'high polling' third of the total 703 listed - and the greater majority of items announced since the last Poll were in that Poll's top third. There's hope for us yet! 34theletterbetweenB&D
Thanks to the team for all the survey effort, with well presented results. Just regarding OO, problem for Hornby in the top end of the results. Few big steam engines. Better move fast on the original condition MN if they don't want that in someone else catalogue! Generally there's no 'stand out' item in my view. All the obvious low hanging fruit has been picked. Of the 'useful' items for my own modelling that finished up in the top 50/25 zones the only one I have not already kit built or bashed from RTR parts is the 75T Cowans Sheldon crane. That could be an opportunity for a DCC tour de force. I confess myself baffled that the LMS/LMR contingent is so little interested in their common standard steam era goods and non-gangwayed passenger rolling stock: I voted for it from an ER perspective, because it got everywhere, like h.simplex/dandelions/chewing gum/ choose your own preferred analogy... RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted May 3, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2013 Hmm, my post from last night seems to have vanished but no hardship to repeat a big vote of thanks to Brian and the poll team for their excellent organisation of the poll and the useful sorting and publication of the results and supporting stats. Some interesting results but most amazingly I have for once managed to vote for something which came out on top of its category and not just once but in half a dozen separate categories; I can but hope that inflation linking of pensions will continue into the future. RMweb Gold BMacdermott Posted May 3, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2013 Hello '34' The LMS and SR Breakdown Cranes also polled 'high'. Peter Bedding
One posting above noted that the Merchant Navy loco does not quite get the support that might be expected from past performance. One reason might be the rise in customer and manufacturing support of seemingly less glamorous types. Once I would have sought a better MN model, but now that there is a better than half chance of being offered a choice of O2s with sub variants, likewise for the three 0415s, and very probably varieties of S15, the 700 Black Motors, six and eight-wheel Drummond and Urie tenders, not to mention pre and post grouping designs of coaching stock in Eras 3 and 4 liveries, a whole raft of EMUs from my past to sit on top of a viaduct diorama/layout, against a background of milk trains on the SW main line, with correct era van trains with brake vans to match, and even a fair chance of correct running numbers on the side of weathered wagons, then I find that even my interest in Mr Bulleid's finest has been overtaken. Like Stationmaster (above) I am also pleased that my modest pension can be put to uses other than Council Tax, and I enjoy the arrival of each new temptation. Us 4mm types have never had it so good. Thank you to the Poll Team. PB

Daniel W
I'm surprised that Bachmann have not produced the 2MT 2-6-0 already, maybe they view it as being too similar to the Ivatt 2MT? Interesting to see the GWR Steam Railmotor polling to high, not exactly ideal RTR material, but in recent years that has been less of a barrier. Congratulations to Brian and the rest of the poll team on a job well done! The only addition I would like to see is more steam era Civil Engineers wagons, although these are admittedly fairly fairly niche items.
Ozexpatriate
Interesting to see the GWR Steam Railmotor polling to high, not exactly ideal RTR material Why ever not? The GWR BLT may be considered passé or clichéd by British outline, model railway cognoscente, but it is still very dear to some of us. The GWR rail motor was extensively used in suburban and branchline work from the turn of the 20th century until the 1930s. If you mean that it didn't last until nationalisation, then yes, I take your point. Personally I'm delighted (and not at all surprised). For the past four years at least it has been building up steam and climbing up an assortment of polls. In the 'as preserved' lake or early Collett liveries, I suspect lots of punters who don't model the GWR will be tempted - just like the 2BIL.
