Wrong region for either of my next 'layouts to come', but I will have a model of 1708 when they do it, as I recall it from the early days of the KWVR. When I was a lad I chopped the cab roof off a Triang Jinty to make a model of it!

By the look of the different colour of plastic, the whole boiler front ring/smokebox is interchangable for different models?

I've had an email from hattons saying; 'We have been informed by Bachmann that this item, viewable at http://www.ehattons.com/StockDetail.aspx?SID=60870

has had its running number amended from what was originally announced. It will now be released with running number 41661. Running number 41708 will now be released in BR black with late crest (item 31-432).'

Likewise, not my modelling area, but will also have a model of 41708 as I spent many happy hours keeping it in running condition on Swanage Railway. :sungum:

It's also helpful to have a well detailed backhead if it's an open-cab.

Then major variation would be for a round-topped boiler instead of the Belpaire variety.  However, I note other similar models with firebox variations have not been produced.

The splashers do look a bit large and wide compared to the prototype, and the cab does also seem a little robustly designed.  Just out of interest can you get right-sized wheels and splashers in P4?

Understand that Bachmann want the cab to retain its shape after you've dropped it on the floor.

It would be nice if the cab cutout thickness could be scalloped.

...the cab does also seem a little robustly designed...Understand that Bachmann want the cab to retain its shape after you've dropped it on the floor.

It does look somewhat heavier than the cutout on its close relative, Bachmann's 3F model, once I had the screen image scaled the same size as the model. But is that just the light coloured plastic visually overstating the width, and it will 'reduce' once black?

No real reason I can think of for an open back tank loco cab to require any more robust sections than those on a similarly proportioned tender loco cab. Or is it possible that some might be likely to pick up the tank loco by the cab roof? Surely not, when the tank sides offer a good central gripping point to get fingerprints all over...

Looking at this pic from Kernow (The original from Bachmann has dissapeared)

http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/images/prod_40062.jpg

Viewed from the front, the cab cutout appears to feature quite heavy beading/framing/strengthening.

The actual side sheets may not be as "robust" as they look from the rear 3/4 view.

Whether this is correct, acceptable or "good enough" will be in the eye of beholder.

I suspect that when the model is painted black it won't be the first thing I notice about it.

A bit of a silly question, but did 41708 run with a full cab in BR service? As most of the pictures I have seen of her show her as a half cab.

Certainly had a half-cab in May 1960, so I'd guess the answer is no.

The last time I saw 41708 in steam at KWVR towards the end of it's last boiler ticket, it was still running with a half cab and I have never seen photos of it running with a full cab in BR days. As far as I know the full cab has only been fitted since it has been at Barrow Hill. I don't know why or if it has ever steamed in this form. Anyone know?

41708 at Swanage - 1988, apologies for the quality of pre-digi pic !

1708 had a 'back-cab' built for it when the loco was first overhauled in preservation, and it (usually) followed the loco where ever it went, well it did up until it left Swanage. At Swanage the back-cab was fitted outside the summer season.

Incidentally the old '1708 Group' also owned a small Peckett 0-6-0ST, named 'Cunarder' that was at Swanage in the 1980's, that loco was rebuilt, on request of the 1708 Group, as a tank loco to give it a 'Midland' look, as a joke I christened it '47160', it had the number painted on, and it went down like a lead balloon with the purists, all the 'Mr Angries' wrote and complained to the Steam Railway mag - all good fun !!!
