I have been busy adding sound to 3 AM gauged Hornby Black 5s. All have the Locoman sounds on a Zimo chip, all have different speakers(all fitted in the tenders). Interesting to hear the differences in sound from each loco. If I can get a recording of them I will try and add it here.

Next up a Hornby B1 and a DJH Caprotti std 5 for the same customer

Baz

It is interesting how speaker choice makes such a difference - not better or worse, just different. I was fitting sound to a Duchess yesterday using the Digitrains 'heavy LMS' project. From a variety of Zimo 3D and Youchoose  speakers I actually though an iphone 6 speaker gave the best approximation.

Whose projects will you use for the B1 and the Standard 5? I was surprised how loud and sharp the bark of the latter was when 73156 was loaned to the Severn Valley a couple of years ago - almost like a Castle and nothing at like a Black 5.

All of the locos are being fitted with the sound chips supplied by the owner.
The B1 has a Zimo from Digitrains, the Caprotti is a Loksound from SDW of a Standard 5.

The B1 has been supplied with a 23mm round speaker designed to fit in the Hornby tender...getting the chip and stay alive in is interesting.

Yet to start on the Caprotti.

In EM I prefer to get the speakers as near to the chimney as possible. DJH Duke of Gloucester has a round speaker in the boiler and sounds very good, others have sugar cubes between the frames.

And yes the 3 speakers (all in the tenders of the Black 5s do have a big difference in sound production.

Having spent a lot of time away from the UK I have cleared off some more locos and wagons.

More news on the locos soon suffice to say one of them is an EMd Bachmann Ivatt 2-6-0

post-7650-0-87612600-1526665288_thumb.jpg.

Repainted, renumbered, sound chipped and weathered...

I also had a "rush" job. 5 unfitted EX LMS and 5 fitted ex LMS brake vans to be regauged to EM, new couplings fitted and then weathered.

The 4 unfitted are Bachmann ones, 1 is a Parkside kit (built , painted and lettered by me)

post-7650-0-03473400-1526665230_thumb.jpg

One of the Bachmann ones was a not in common use one

post-7650-0-35423800-1526665243_thumb.jpg

Five Hornby fitted brakes had vac pipes fitted before weathering

post-7650-0-77044000-1526665262_thumb.jpg

The owner asked for "generic" weathering as time did not allow for each one to be matched with a suitable photograph of such vehicles in use in the Carlisle area.

Delivered to Tony Wright who, very kindly delivered them for use on Carlisle.

It is always nice to do something different. A set of four ICI bogie hopper wagons for Chapel-en-le-Frith arrived from Nicktoix. Not many colour photos of these so from the one "in service" one I have found...

A number of locos I have weathered or fitted sound to have appeared in the Jan 2019 Railway Modeller in the article on Carlisle by Tony Wright. Lots of other locos and stock wetahered for this layout. Might just get to physically see it one day!

A couple of Heljan Co-Bos - regauged by Mike Edge then sound chips fitted (Digitrains), weathered and new pipework fitted

These work the "Condor" on the layout.

A DJH Clan - built by the late Alistair Rolfe (in EM) weathered by me .. and I think it has a Zimo sound chip fitted.

and a Caledonian Jumbo built by Mike Edge (in EM), weathered by me

After a while away and doing some housework (painting and decorating) I have got back to do some more work.

Two Locos to be fitted with sound (a Bachmann Patriot 45543 Home Guard and a Bachmann BR Std 5MT in green 73068).. no pictures but there are 4 others fitted with sound and weathered..

As a taster a Hornby Black 5, re gauged to EM and then fitted with etched chassis overlays (designed and fitted by Mike Edge) Black 5 44765 - speaker fitted into the boiler under the double chimney. Black and White photo of loco supplied for weathering illustration.  Tender looks better with real coal..

Another loco for a customer. This is a Hornby 4MT 4-6-0.  It needed renumbering , sound fitting (chip supplied by customer) and weathering.

969119612_BRStd4MT750563qtrfront.JPG.013a3fc3766e17e423f9680bc60d6ee3.JPGFitting the chip and stay alive in the tender was OK (no space for the block stay alive so that is in the coal space). Some of the mazak under the chimney was removed to allow a sugar cube to be fitted.

Using a photograph provided I then used my standard ink and powder techniques to provide the weathering, then a bit of very thinned white poster paint to add some details.

133634405_BRStd4MT75056front.JPG.06ce96bde07293bb336af213e3b0dd4b.JPGNote the slight marking under the smokebox door.

And to complete ..this is the other side of the  locomotive

and the final weathered/sound fitted etc loco for this current batch

Then weathered to a picture or two provided.

Baz, have you tried iPhone speakers yet?

Although probably not so easy to fit under a kettle's chimney as a sugar cube they are very well priced on Ebay and superb in any where there is a slim space plus they can be cut down without any noticeable loss in sound.

Fitting sound to Bachmann 08s is interesting..this one

1894002812_08weatheredblack(1280x576).jpg.c2a1911190db4c02d8ad524bd5aa0d62.jpgI did for me some time ago..and I have just fitted another one (again in BR Black)  for a customer. Forgot to get a  photograph but he wanted it with sound and a gentle waft of "in use" loco weathering. Seems he likes it!

A few diesels. The owner had fitted DCC chips to them. I have reset some of the CVs on these to sort out acceleration/Deceleration and then a waft of weathering after adding the details at one end on these.

First up a Vitrains 37

EM (regauged- Bachmann Ivatt 4MT Mogul (aka a Mucky Duck or Chinese Cracker). Renumbered and shed/smokebox door plate ( supplied by client) added. Pick ups fitted to the tender then a client supplied Zimo sound chip, stay alive and speaker were fitted into the loco at the smokebox end (I don't like steam chuffs coming from a tender). New front steps (comet) supplied by client added.

A nice colour photograph from one of the Railways around Bradford was used and..

A gentle waft of road dirt on the frames and wheels then a bit of "Grease" added to the tender axleboxes.

I had a bit of spare time at our show in between operating Chapel en le Frith (Central). One of our Club Members has a Korean Brass Black 5, re-chassied with a Comet chassis by Innocentman. It was a bit too clean so..

luckily I had a decent colour photo of the very same engine.
