North American Photo Sites

Recommended Posts

F-UnitMad's comment made me realize there might be some sites that you guys haven't come across yet so I thought I'd share some I use.

One of my favorites is the Nerail Photo Archive that mostly features New York and New England photos.

http://photos.nerail.org/

They also have a few companion sites that you can reach from Nerail that feature the rest of the US and a pretty fair amount of international fare.

Fallen Flag Railroad Photos -- not as slick as some of the other sites but gobs of content.

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/

RailPictures.net -- pretty much explains itself.

http://www.railpictures.net/

Railphotos.com

http://www.railphotos.com/

RR Picture Archives

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/

RailcarPhotos

http://www.railcarphotos.com/

Canadian Freight Railcar Gallery

http://freight.railfan.ca/

Feel free to post any sites I have missed.  There's a tremendous amount of material available online.  I'll add more as I remember them or come across new ones.

I like Rail Pictures a lot - if you sign up (the free bit) you can designate your own "favourites" and it's handy to find "street running" which is popular amongst Brits 'cos it is relatively rare over there. In the UK there is more separation of the railway from everything else....

Thanks for contributing Jason, much appreciated - I still have a lot to learn about American Railroads despite living here....

I'm a loner by nature (mostly to do with what I do and I detest crowds) and find out most things by trial and error.

Best, Pete.

Pete,

Glad to contribute.  I've traveled quite a bit over the years.  Grew up in Upstate New York, spent 5 years in the Marine Corps which took me to northern Virginia for a little while and Southern California for four years.  Drove the NY-California 3,000 mile trip 6 times and have spent the past 15 years in northeast Indiana.  At last count, I had visited something like 33 of the 50 states and taken train pictures in many of them.  I'll be glad to do some digging for info/pictures if you're looking for something in particular or just want some general idea of where to go railfanning.

Take care,

Jason

Will reply in full soonest Johnny.....

Best, Pete.

PS Anyone please add to this if you find anything really good, or just good, really.........

Such as my favourite short line Central Illinois http://www.flickr.com/groups/ciryrailway/pool

And my favorite class 1s NS & CSX http://www.pbase.com/richard_downer/train_photos

Much much more if you have a look around. Good thing with these is there is plenty of model photos too especially phase.

Dave.

Tim  - Thanks for posting that link to the Maine pictures.  Got about halfway through the Bangor & Aroostook pictures the other night.  Need to get back to it.

Dave -  I had completely overlooked pbase and flickr.  I used flickr extensively searching for photos of feed mills and grain elevators.

Was just cleaning up some really old email and came across a link to Sam Bott's D&H photos on RR Picture Archives.  This collection is from the early Guilford years on the D&H.  Some great stuff in here.  My only complaint is that the first 3 pages of photos all have a date of "1/1/1984" which is bogus for most/all of the shots.  I can roughly date many of photos based on what locomotives are in the picture or what paint scheme and the foliage on the trees and ground.  It would be nice to have more exact dates to help nail down things for modeling but I'm still happy to have these shots available.

For those of you interested, there are some DVD's out there made from Sam Botts videos.  I can get more info if anyone is interested.

Here's another one.  Houghton's RailImages.  It appears that this site is geared towards selling prints of Ken Houghton's pictures so the images so you don't get to see large versions of the pictures.  Still some good material though covering a number of the New England lines.

Interestingly, I also found another site with pictures from Ted Houghton.  This isn't a very common name, maybe these guys are brothers.  Not sure.  You can view Ted's pictures under the Railroad Photos tab of his site:

Pete Colton put me onto this one recently - lots of 1960s/70s images which is nice - also nice is there's lots of 'overall scene' images which are at least as useful as train shots to modellers: http://www.godfatherrails.com/

Coincidentally seemingly another user of the same software - http://www.heartlandrails.com/ has shots from all over the place, and the 90s to the present day, but majors on modern class ones and regionals in the Illinois/Iowa/Wisconsin area's - lots of WSOR goodies on here in particular, but also IAIS etc...lots of nice module idea's buried therein... ;)

I recently uploaded fifty plus freight car shots taken on a sunny Saturday in August 2004 to my flickr Rolling Stock Album.  A selection of hoppers, boxes, tank cars, etc.  The album is currently sorted by upload date, there is older material from the 1980s as well a bit further down...

Great shots of some interesting cars!

The other day I was stopped by the gates at the old LV railroad on the borders of Scotch Plains/Rahway.

Pleased to see NS #8025 “Monongahela” pulling a train which included no less than 5 Pan Am boxcars and possibly 7 in very heavily Weathered/Faded condition.

Of course, my Iphone was inaccessible, sigh.

Best, Pete.

You want Pan Am?

There were two in a CN freight I saw last weekend - photo taken from a closed (to vehicular traffic) bridge near Brighton, ON.

BTW. This was the level crossing over the CP Main line on the next road east of the bridge. The CN crossing had AHBs (and the CP crossing on the road with the closed bridge had lights)

Whenever I try to post a link lately, the site crashes on me. So I'll just recommend the yahoo group "PeoriaRails" for some excellent pictures of Illinois railroading, contemporary and historical.

I'm working in Peoria at the moment. For a sleepy town on the banks of the Illinois River and seemingly in the middle of nowhere (where nowhere is a giant cornfield) it's a real hotbed of rail action still, with no less than 9 railroads serving the area, ranging from the big boys (NS / UP / CN / BNSF) to regionals like the reborn TP&W, IAIS, and EJ&E) to real short lines - including one which still regularly uses F Units in regular freight service..

The Peoria area is certainly well worth a visit - either in real life, or have a surf around the various websites and GoogleEarth. Lots of inspiration...
