Directional lighting

I recently bought an excellent looking 4CEP by Bachmann. However the lighting doesn't seem to be directional. The 2 digit running number end is perm White and the opp end is perm red. Is this correct or should they change colour with movement of unit ? ie when going forward should be showing White and red on the tail end. Someone let me know then if it's a fault I can return it.

Many thanks

Hi,It is correct that when you change direction the lights do not change. The southern use the red blind for a tail lamps on these. If you look at the sheet with the unit a believe it explains that you have to take off the gangway to change the blinds around. There are extra items in the acc pack.

if you have any problems or need help you could give the Bachmann service dept a call next week and they will be happy to go through it with you.

Hope this explains a bit more for you,

Richard

As an ex-Southern Region traveller, I can confirm that the headcode box lighting is not directional. They were dimly lit anyway, so it was hardly possible to tell if they were switched on by day.

The double-red blinds took the place of tail lights. When SR EMU's were hauled to or via other regions, normal tail lights were attached, as non-Southern signalmen could not be expected to be aware of the special red tail-headcode.

The boxes were also able to display double white blinds. The idea was that when units were coupled, the boxes at the coupled ends would be be cranked to double white, so that if a unit passed a signal box showing double white, the signalman would notice that something was amiss (or even missing). In practice, boxes between units sometimes showed a number code, and since with gangwayed units like the CEP, the gangway door was hooked open, a signalman would not be able to see the headcode of a detached unit anyway (though an open gangway door might be noticed).

Headcode boxes were originally also capable of displaying broken or whole bars, one above and one below the number, to indicate route variations.

Has anyone had a go at changing the headcodes on the Bachmann unit? Mine came with '50', ' 8' and double-red; do they all have the same numbers?
