RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 24, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2013 I've decided to have a go at this. The village forge looks a nice little building but I'm not going to build the house to help make it a quick build. It will be of stone construction with a slate roof and set in it's own small yard surrounded by a dry stone wall. The brace on the door will be the correct way round... Anyway I've made good progress so far, the basic structure is mounting board covered with Slaters stone. Since this photo the chimney has been built, the lintels fitted and the windows made a bit taller and more in proportion.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 25, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 25, 2013 A bit more done, lintels and cills, chimney and roofs, placed on a board with what may be how the yard will look.
N15class
It will be a nice little scene when finished. What will you be doing on the roof?
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 26, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 26, 2013 Hi Peter, The roof will be slates, I usually use Scalescenes ones but for this I will use individual card/paper ones, it's not too big there will also be quite a bit of ivy as there was on Allan's original. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 28, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 28, 2013 Hi Peter, The roof will be slates. Right, I've since put my brain into gear and realised the roof will be pantiles and not slates, I'm aiming to build it in a style local to me, so it is to be sandstone and pantiles. Here's the first section of roof test fitted, Wills tiles aren't the best representation of pantiles but they are better than anything I could produce any other way. The walls are painted and will need a bit of weathering with some greeny grey colouring.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 30, 2013 The roof is now on, it just needs a bit of filler here and there, especially for the mortar under the ridge stones.
durham light infantry
The roof is now on, it just needs a bit of filler here and there, especially for the mortar under the ridge stones. IMGP7971-001.JPG Don't forget that there would not be just mortar in the ridge line. Broken pantiles were used not just to reduce the amount of mortar used, but to direct the water flow down the bed of the tile. Mike
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted October 1, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2013 Mike, not with this type of stone ridge, well, I've not seen it done round here anyway.
Iain Popplewell
Starting to look like a North Yorkshire Moor forge already.Looking forward to seeing further progress.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted October 2, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks Iain, I'm not sure about the ridge, I've tried to use the Wills one rounded off a bit but I may replace it with something made from plastic strip and shaped a bit better, ridge stones tend to be quite rough in texture. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted October 10, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2013 Made a bit more progress today, stonework has had a bit of weathering and the ridge stones 'distressed' and painted. I've also done a pit of pointing with 'Squadron Putty' filler.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted October 11, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 11, 2013 Made lots of progress on this today and it's really taking shape now. The doors are made and some fitted, the stonework and roof has been weathered with powders. I've started to paint the interior kit (Langley) for the forge, it will need a lot of bits - tools and materials - making to complete it though. Really pleased with the way this end is looking. N15class
The roof has come out very well. I was a bit concerned about the look after you had done the filling. The detail of the forge is begining to look good too.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted October 13, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 13, 2013 Yes it is getting a bit warm now the fire's lit... Paving has now been fitted in front of the building and this has been glued down to the board.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted October 25, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 25, 2013 Made a bit of progress, got some of the surrounding walls installed and I've started to build the ground around the building up. The pig is showing where they will live.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 25, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 25, 2013 Saw this last weekend and the attention to detail is absolutely stunning - the hinges and locks on the doors are so, so delicate.

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 26, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 26, 2013 Well, it's been a month since I did anything on this but in the last couple of nights I seem to have got quite a bit done, the ground has been made up, walls completed, the yard surface laid and grass planted! Last job tonight was to carve two 'stone' gate posts and make a gate.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted November 27, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2013 Very nice and very neat - too neat maybe ? Wil you be adding junk in the yard ?

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 27, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2013 Yes, there will be quite a bit of stuff to go in there, all sorts of fiddly bits...
RMweb Premium it's-er Posted November 27, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 27, 2013 Is this model based on the forge at Malham, by any chance? It looks remarkably similar? John
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 27, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2013 I've no idea, it's from one of Allan's drawings, he may be able to tell us.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 28, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 28, 2013 Started to sort the details out, the gates are fitted as well as a water trough. Everything else is only placed somewhere like right, the hoss needs a bit more work, as it came it had a full harness on, this has been filed off then painted to see if it needed any more, it needs a bit of filler then a repaint and it should be ok.
