Hi Guys thought I start a thread showing some of my attempts at weathering. :mail:  I don't use spray paints, just good old weathering powders and paints! I mostly weather wagons at the moment, but I have just weathered my first locomotive and I am very impressed with the finish! :locomotive:Please tell me what you think of my results and how I can improve!  :paint:

Just finished off weathering my first locomotive and I must say I am over the moon with how she turned out! :locomotive: I used weathering powders from the Humbrol range (no spray paints), including Dark Earth, Iron Oxide, Smoke and White Powders. I then held the powders in place with a quick spray of Humbrol Matt Varnish. Please tell me what you think of the results! :paint:

No wonder you're impressed... it looks brilliant!   I'll be well proud if I can achieve something similar. Did you really just use powders?

Thanks Alan! Yep, just Humbrol Weathering Powders and some Humbrol Matt Varnish (spray) to hold them all down. :locomotive:  Just about to upload some picture of some of my weathered wagons (also using powders) if you are interested? :paint:

Here are some examples of my weathered wagons! Sadly I do not own any of these wagons any more, as people loved them so much they brought them from me! :jester: Again I used Humbrol Powders and also some Humbrol Acrylic Authentic Rail Colour Rust mixed with a bit of Humbrol 33 Matt Black. I apply this mixture of paint with a sponge to achieve the flaky rust effect on the steel sided wagons and the metal frame work on the other wagons. Please tell me what you think! :paint:

Done with much confidence, I reckon... very distinctive and quite inspirational for a non-airbrush-owner like me.  You've certainly got 'the knack'.  I particularly like... no, I Iike 'em all!... and thanks for starting your thread.

Best wishes

Thanks again Alan! They take a bit long to do than an airbrushed model, but I feel (and I'm sure you will agree) the results looks a lot better! LOL! Shame I never get around to doing any of these myself, apart from the loco that is! :locomotive: Trying it on a coach at the moment, but the results are not as good. Will have to give it another go. :paint:

Excellent work.

A very nice light touch.

Thanks you very much! Moving onto coaches now, but sadly not getting the same results at the moment. Very hard to get that sort of light dusting on the sides, if you know what I mean. :locomotive: Will give it another go though! :paint:

Just epic Mate! Nice one!
At the next Compton Martin Exhibition, I'll bring down my Bachmann 45xx for you to use if you want, nowhere near as good looking as yours though!

That would be super mate! I could weather your up if you want, but we would have to find some why of sending it back. :jester:

The wagons look great. And the loco is fine...except I would've expected more oil/grease than rust around the piston/rod. That looks a little overdone IMO (but it is just MO!)

Superb work, a real inspiration to all. Keep it up

Thanks you ever so much mate! Glad you like them! I am over the moon with the results on the 45xx! :locomotive: So I hope to purchase her out right from Signals Models, considering she is on lone at the moment!

The loco looks superb! I'll be buying locos from you next. lol I'm going to have to get some Humbrol weathering powders to complement my DCC concepts stuff. Your wagons are well worth the money :)

Thank you ever so much mate! LOL! You never know if you come to the Compton Martin show next year... :jester: A bloke in the local area has contacted me and wants me to weather his whole fleet! For a start he want me to weather 12 wagons! He also want me to weather his some locos too! :locomotive:  So something tell me there will not be much progress made on the layout! LOL! :jester:

Just cleaned the wheel on the 45xx today with Humbrol Thinners and cotton buds, to make sure all the contact surfaces are clean. I rested at piece of track with power on the rear wheels and held the bud to the moving wheels. Just wanted to know if it was ok to clean then with like this, using Humbrol Thinners? Just don't want to do any damage to the model. One wheel seems to have some scratches on it, I don't think the rail did this when the wheel where spinning. I also noticed the lubricator rod on this model seem to be a bit floppy does any one else have this problem (not to be confused :jester: )?

I don't mean to sound thick, but I am! So, what the lubricator rod?  :dontknow:

LOL! I'm not sure if it called that. It's the little rod on the right side of the engine (if you are standing in the cab looking down the boiler). It goes into a little cylinder which lubricates the engine and creates that famous GWR ticking noise.

Oh that! Never noticed that before! LOL

Mine's a bit loose, but it doesn't affect the running, so I'm fine!

Blimey, the 45xx and wagons look superb with the weathering powders! I've only done a couple of wagons and a PMV with the Humbrol Powders so far, just not had the bottle do weather a loco for fear of screwing it up. When I do I may well weather-up my old Bachmann Std 4 tender loco first rather than do any of the more modern expensive Hornby/Bachmann models so I just to get the hang of it more and hopefully get the effects right.
