RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 4, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 4, 2013 Hi All With all the wind going on in the Hornby Magazine Brake Tender thread http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/64001-Hornby-magazine-oo-gauge-brake-tender/ I thought I would quickly build one. The other night I went out to my man shed to look for suitable bogies. Loads of various makes of Gresley bogies but only one pair of LMS. And these were under a brake tender already. I then realised that I had built that tender to BR diagram 1/557, the one with the short body and LMS bogies that rumour has it they ran with BR bogies but no one has yet to produce a photo of these two. These will come off and be replaced by a set of LNER bogies to make yet another 1/555. On realising my mistake I decided to build a 1/555 and a 1/556. Stage one. Remove the diagrams form the diagram book and photocopy them to 4mm scale. If you do not have your own copy of the diagram book these drawings can be found on http://www.barrowmoremrg.co.uk/BRBDocuments/BRFreight2Issue.pdf Stage two. Measure and cut out the sides, and end pieces, the curve on the end can be formed hopefully from two pieces of 1mm plastic card forming parts of the end. They are cemented to a rectangle that is where the contour of the curved top is 1mm in from the outside of the body by 2mm short of the dimension of the raised part. Remember to pilot hole the holes for the buffers and make a start on the coupling hook slot. Stage three. Mark on the drawing where the inside of the 1mm side bisects the contour of the curve, both sides. Then draw a line from one side to the other. Draw a series of 1mm parallel lines. These will give the dimensions for the laminated layers of 1mm plastic card that will form the curved top of the tender. Cut and cement these on the model. Tomorrow I will shape the tenders. RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 4, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 4, 2013 Not too much done tonight, I was distracted by catching up on some Radio 4 dramas and looking at brake tender photos. The bodies are starting to take shape. Here is my nearly 20 years old, to be detailed and finished one day diagram 1/557. It will not be finished as a 1/557 but a 1/555 and hand its bogies over to the long one under construction.

RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 15, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 15, 2013 Last night I slapped on some Milliput to the two under construction. I also added some Milliput to the corners of a vac formed body I picked up donkey years a go, as these were rounded and needed to be squared off. This morning I had a quiet time filing the filler smooth. I need to reapply some to the 1/555 tender as in trying to get the profile of the top the same both sides I took more than the filler off. The vac formed tender needs to have a couple of dents filled as well. Update photos The two under construction The 1/555 will be a rebodied "Cowlairs jobby" and has Hornby bogies with footboards on. The vac fomed 1/555 and a scratch built 1/558. The Stratford square one has been re-bogied with Bachmann 8 ft LNER bogies which are correct for this design. The vac form body close up showing the filler on the corners. Some earlier scratch built bodies. the nearest to the camera is a 1/557 (short body with LMS bogies) and the other two are 1/555s all need handrails, brake wheels etc. Lastly my two kit built ones, a PDK/Crownline/Inter-city model in front and a ABS kit needing some attention following extensive exhibition wear and tear. RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 15, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 15, 2013 If or when I get these finished I will need to add some transfers to them. The Fox ones seem to cover a later period than I model. There are some transfers on the sheet I can use but for the number I need it will work out quite expesive to throw away most of each sheet. John at Cambridge Custom does not do them and niether do Modelmaster. Anyone got a clue where I can get some from? Looking forward to adding a Hornby Magazine model to my collection. FAQ. Why have you got so many? Now that is a very good question and the answer is I needed a few for my loco depot model and I just got carried away. RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted December 16, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 16, 2013 I've got a left over Fox Sheet from the PDK build and will only need one more set from it for my DBT with LMS Bogies (can't remember the Diagram at the mo). Any use to you? Phil P.S. Clever builds by the way.

Oddly enough, I model just that later period , so should be able to spare you the early ones. I'll remember to bring the sheet along when next we meet and you can scavenge any of use.
