Steam only does one round trip a day from Nordhausen so we needed to take a tram and Railcar to get back to Wernigerode

Bahnhofsplatz, the line on the left joins into the HSB

A town tram arrives

Then ours, these are Combi trams that run in overhead in town and a small Diesel engine on the HSB as far as Ilfeld

You can sit and watch through the front.

A connecting HSB Railcar now takes over, once the drivers have had a chat.

Again you get a good view over the drivers shoulder.

We now arrived at Eisfelder Talmuhle and crossed the Nordhausen service

and swapped crew with this so I assume it was heading for Nordhausen too.

Well, if that isn’t a splendid trip you’re having, I don’t know what is! Thanks for sharing!

Again you get a good view over the drivers shoulder. 44012711204_18f69806d0_b.jpg

Ah, so they use the same basic Tatonka rucksack available to us Leipzig tram jockeys, ours coming with a different logo patch on it, obviously.

Day 4

The Selketalbahn.

This is joined to the Harzquerbahn at Eisfelder Talmuhle but the connections make catching the steam service to travel around the whole line impossible.

44717797012_ee3c244f1c_b.jpgHSB DAY 4 by -salisburyASC-

The timetable is available here for summer and winter.

So we took a mainline train to Quedlingburg to catch the 10:30 to Alexisbad.

7236, our loco all day, arrives.

Quedlingburg town is very nice but the station is a bit tired with a fair bit of graffiti

We loped along the old standard gauge formation to Gernrode where a S curve takes you onto the traditional start of the Selketal line.

This line is much more up and down and varied but a 2-10-2 on four coaches romps along with minimal effort.

Arriving at Alexisbad we connected with the Railcar to Harzgerode but we missed that short branch to concentrate on steam haulage.

There are a few historical bits an pieces by the old loco shed. There's usually one of the stored 2-10-2's in there but the windows were too dirty to tell.

By this time we were the only three on the train so the guard wasn't bothering to do the usual regular ticket checks

Now as mentioned our driver did spirited running quite well so the ascent of the bank all the way to Stiege was spectacular! You'd think he had 8 on up the Brocken. The runround at Stiege was explosive (I'll add the snippet of video I caught later)

We left Stiege 22 late!

the lack of photos is mostly due to hanging off the back and listening to a steam equivalent of Ride of the Valkyries :)

Magdesprung, most station stops were now about 10 seconds long.

But while the HSB had delivered in spades the HEX service was cancelled and just said rail replacement bus on the scrolling screen.

No staff, no signs, nothing so we waited out the front and an anonymous green bus turned up which turned out to be going to Halberstadt. A bunch of equally confused locals joined us.

42943816830_0d9210aa63_b.jpgHarzer Schmalspurbahnen Eisfelder Talmuhle to Wernigerode 17/09/18 by -salisburyASC-

30883257878_4789c0a85b_b.jpgHarzer Schmalspurbahnen Eisfelder Talmuhle to Wernigerode 17/09/18 by -salisburyASC-

At Halberstadt again no sign of staff and while there was one train to Wernigerode the second was cancelled so we were doubly thanking the HSB crew for the spectacular run back as there was no way the next bus would have got us there in time!

Safely back at Wernigerode

So three superb days of riding the HSB and only HEX mainline caused any problem.

211 miles of narrow gauge steam haulage and 37 miles by NG tram and Railcar, not bad for a €86 HSB 3 day pass.

It was time for more Apfelstrudel but too dark for you to see it ;)

6001 was nowhere to be seen and we only saw two of the mallets so I assume they are either having heavy maintenance at Westerntor or flying the flag elsewhere as I've seen a few pics of 6001 on tour in the last couple of years. I doubt many other lines would want the 2-10-2's unbending their railway ;)

When we got to Hasselfelde earlier last week they had the shed doors open so could see 99.7244 inside. And 99.6001 was in Westerntor for repairs. We too had a rail replacement bus when we were going from Wernigerode to Quedlinburg. The train was 10 late to Halberstadt and they let the branch train go. No probs as we had plenty of time. But the next branch train was cancelled and a bus that never made the steam turn by 25 minutes which put a spanner in the works as the next HSB train was 3 hours later! So we ended up doing the branches by unit, oh well will just have to go back and do them again with steam.

On the Brocken there's a siding on the level that an up or down train can drop into to let the other train pass.

Here's a Brocken bound service heading past while we are sat in the siding.

99 222 the original 2-10-2 got there a bit early and we had to pass the train in the siding from a standing start, you'll hear the safety valves popping too

Standing by the smokebox leaving Schierke on the way down.

99 7236 heading for Hasselfelde

7236 again storming up the hill towards Stiege to make up time. He did too turning a 29 min late start at Eisfelder Talmuhle into an ontime arrival at Quedlingburg

And saving more time running round 'briskly'

And for comparison I've reloaded the full run on my layout in HD (hopefully)

Sherry had posted that pic of her crusty old husband standing by the track with the family jam-jar in the background. We were very close to the former Sud Harz line from Brunnenbachsmühle to Tanne. This is looking back along the trackbed towards the former.

And here are the remains of the western abutment of the bridge that carried the line over the Harzquerbahn. The fence between the two parts of Germany ran across the road here, hence the bridge being destroyed.

And here is the eastern abutment.

We were awaiting the passage of the 11.55 from Wernigerode to Eisfelder Talmühle, and here she is approaching the crossing.

A rather ordinary video. Vids are not my speciality
