Stubby47's Entry - Yes, it's a toilet !

Actually, I'm going right out of my area of knowledge - it's a London Underground scene !!!

As 4ft by 1ft is an odd shape for a perspective diorama, I've decided to create several scenes in one.

So the lower part will be a 4mm underground station, with views through to the 2mm track behind. This will be typical u/g white tiles and posters, maybe with  representation of a tube train at the rear.

The upper area will be split in to two 2ft x 1ft areas, the left one being the station concourse, with a view through to a 2mm street scene behind and the right area being the gent's toilet.

The concourse will have shops and other useful bits, staged to be reducing in size the further from the front they are. Roof supporting pillars will also help to provide view blockers to enhance the perspective.

The gents toilet will have a long urinal wall and cubicles down one side, again reducing towards the rear. I'm also hoping to include overhead skylight panels.

Are you going for victorian architecture or modern Stubby?

Having just seen ( parts of ) The Lion, the Witch and the other thing, I'll probably base the tube on that style of architecture.

There will be no sewer, Dutch, Victorian or otherwise.

I'd love to offer a joke, but to be honest my jokes are cr*p and any shred of reputation would end up down the pan........

Your idea sounds brilliant, and I look forward to seeing it come alive. Scale/perspective (and ambient sounds) have the ability to 'change the game' for layouts so I'm glad of Andy's choice and happy you have the skill to embrace it.

Good luck,

Mark

Mother Goose ??? Thanks a lot !

Having understood the rules a bit more now, I'm happy that my intended entry will fit the required criteria of using perspective, have a frame, top and sides, and include ablution facilities.

Of course, as we don't have such transport infrastructure, as I'll be depicting, in Cornwall, I therefore have no knowledge as to the general cleanliness, or otherwise, of said facilities, so I will use my modelling licence to create what I imagine them to look like...

At least you played a good panto role cud be worse :declare:

Depending on how far down the grubby route with this you go, I wonder if rats and rubbish litter will stroon the place or you thinking moderately clean of the run down but we try to keep it tidy look ?

Eh?

We model Cornwall from afar.

Perhaps Google need to bring out a 'Bog-view' !

Having worked on stations in various parts of the country, including responsibility for toilets, the locking and emptying (of people) of, may I offer some prototypical suggestions?

UV lights in the cubicles (and a druggie marking his arm up outside, rendering them pointless) - Burton on Trent

A festering mop and bucket behind the door - Tamworth Low Level (Gents)

A mid-afternoon drunk looking on the floor for a contact lens and asking others to help search for it - Harrow on the Hill

Little boys having to be held up to wee, owing to a lack of low urinals - many places!

A fare dodger, having been evicted from a train, hiding on top of that toilet pan to avoid detection by platform staff - Totnes (the bloke came out after me and tried to strangle me!)

The worst was what I found stuck to the ceiling one night when locking up the ladies' at Newton Abbot, and there I ought to leave it...

Hi Stubby,

After doing your carriage window diorama forced perspective, is there a minimum distance you need to go to make it look right?

So for arguments sake if you had a OO loco at the very front how far back (or should I say further away) would you need to go to create the illusion of perspective to say have a N-gauge loco that would look right?

Obviously the side scenery would all add to this, but there must be some point at which it's either too steep a drop (the OO loco with the N-gauge one just the other side of it!)  or too shallow (so the furthest loco has to be many feet away!), just curious to know if you found a way to do this or if it was just mocking things up and seeing what it looked like.

Also the aperture where you look at the layout from could end up being one person only type of view to give the best effect.

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian,

It's a good question, but it makes it sound like I know what I'm doing and plan accordingly...

The carriage window diorama worked because of the single view ( especially with one eye or a camera) -I think the scales used (8mm+ to 4mm) just helped as the nearer stuff was 'big'.

I have no idea how 4mm to 2mm will work - I might have to adjust to 7mm to 4mm - so I'll be playng around quite a bit.

Actually, the more I think about it, 7mm to 4mm will be a lot better....

Cheers !!

Stu
