Leadmill
Been working on a project for the corner of a layout my Dad is building. After seeing an article in Model Rail a few years back and some more information occassionally turning up in more recent issues I decided to have a go at turning a disused corner of the layout into a bustling MOD yard. First part of the project is the vehicles I had in mind. I don't have a definitive fixed time period but aiming for late 80's to late 90's which gives me some scope. I apologise in advance for the quality of construction and painting. What I lack in skill I make up for in enthusiasm! Some WIP of the yard Still lots to do. i need some proper Warwells and Warflats. Lowmacs are a temporary stand-in. Had real troube with the Genesis kit and I am not sure I have the skill to put together/paint a WBF kit. I have a Thomas Hill Steeleman currently being worked on, and i'm very tempted to repaint one of Hornbys new Sentinels.

Fat Controller
Lowmacs (along with Lowfits and Plates) were common wagons for transporting kit prior to the introduction of air-braked stock. The Warwell/Warflat fleet was relatively small, so a lot of movements used BR stock. Even in air-braked days, SPAs and OBA/OCAs were used for things like trailers and Land-Rovers. If you are thinking of putting the 4-tonner GS on a Lowmac, then you'll have to lower the canvas tilt to cab level. The one I've seen a photo of had the tilt removed and stowed, with the supports telescoped into one another and pushed down. RMweb Premium TheQ Posted January 8, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) When you finish your layout, Remember to park military vehicles so they can be driven straight out not nose to a wall, as a general rule, this is the normal military instructions (or so my bent ears told me after being shouted at years ago!) Leadmill
Progress on the yard itself. The "top" end will be ballested normally and the siding likely slightly overgrown. Perimeter will be ringed by barbed wire fencing. Found some knightwing fencing that looks quite close to the type often seen around barracks and airfields etc.
Leadmill
Additional vehicles, although yard is aiming for a early 90's feel. I plan to have some vehicles and wagons that can be swapped in to represent late 70's early 80's (Saracens on Lowmacs etc)
Leadmill
More progress pics. Still need to put in perimeter fencing around entire perimeter and install a gate at the head of the sidings where it joins the mainline (behind the boxes). Remainder of the top of the sidings will be ballested and sligthly overgrown. Also need to contruct a vehicle ramp for access to the warflats. Also will probably add a diesel tank or something similar too. Edited January 19, 2014 by Leadmill
Leadmill
Painted up some soldiers, now looking for some figures to use as loaders/railway men. Probably normal ones with some minor repainting. Edited January 20, 2014 by Leadmill
Leadmill
Just assembled and painted a BW Models Ferret Mk4 to provide some variety with wagon loads etc. A pleasure to build so will probably treat myself to a couple more. Also painted up a DFS Land Rover as well to provide a bit of colour in the yard..

boc
Planning an Army Barracks on my layout. Who makes those figures? They look to me like the Caesar British Army models. pitbull1845
Really like this, a great idea to fill a corner. You could make a whole layout in the military theme if you modelled something like Marchwood Military Port. The fleet of vehicles look fab.
Leadmill
Next to be put in is the perimeter fencing and a ramp so wagons can be loaded with vehicles. Oh and I will be painting up a Hornby Sentinel too in MOD green Edited November 14, 2014 by Leadmill
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted November 14, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2014 Oxford Diecast are now making some more modern military vehicles that may be suitable. How about the depot having its own fire station? with a Green Goddess or two.
