How many Class 37`s still survive.

Hi folks,

As an admirer of the 37`s  and researching how they have changed over the years in detail etc. The one question that came too mind was how many are left ?  By this I mean in full service / stabled or preservation as there are plenty of sites that gave details of loco work history or loco scrap dates etc. The only thing I don't seem to find s a comprehensive survivors list.

so does anyone have a current 37 list they like to share or work in the rail system can provide this info ?

website cross matching examples throws up madness as in

site A - loco A is at this place but other site says scrapped or sent abroad etc.

site B- says loco B stored for scrapping in 2002 but other site says loco B in 2001 transferred from company x to company y and still out there working.

It does your pigging head in so grateful to anyone how can provide a live list.

Cheers Ken

Looks like 35 are registered for use on NR: 37038/69/100/70/8/94/217/8/59, 37402/5/9/19/23/5, 37516/8, 37601-12, 37667/76/82/5/8, 37706.

37100/70/8/217 are masquerading as 97301-4.

I reckon a total of 72 others are in various status of preserved/ stored/ neglected/ under restoration etc...

Cheers for the response CHARD and useful it is, yes all this updating / renumbering don't help either. I guess by the time I do a full list me and 37`s will all be gone ha ha. At least that's a few numbers to start with anyway now Thanks.

Not many out of the 300 or so built, are there less 47s?

Yes, there are fewer 47s surviving.  Something like 29 main line registered from a total of 70.  I was intrigued earlier so I did the maths, but I made only a mental note!

Thanks to everyone for the comments and help given so far.

Not many out of the 300 or so built, are there less 47s?

Hi I found this site http://www.class47.co.uk/c47_data_431.php

In site quote total 512 class 47`s built and current fleet data as,

OPERATIONAL ~ 28

REBUILT AS CLASS 57 ~ 33

PRESERVED ~ 33

STORED ~ 21

SCRAPPED ~ 397

Hope this helps you out.

Anyway back on Class 37`s

talking to a friend the other day and BINGO the ole it`s right under your nose, is the local rail depot of Neville Hill. So I paid a visit expecting the brush off, but excellent people there are willing to send me a complete list of all 309 class 37` built with their pre top and all top number details etc.

I got a first list batch sent today - example,

D6701 - 37001 - 37707  - scrapped 2011

D6702 - 37002 - 37351  - scrapped 2007

D6703 - 37003 - 37360 - 37003 - main line tours 2013

so would a full list interest folk either listed on here of placed as a PDF file to download. I don't mind doing this and will require further investigation of certain loco history as example it shows  D6707 - 37007 - 37596 - 37604 -  stored 1996/unknown,  so I would need to research if scrapped of preserved etc.

All thoughts and comments are gladly received.

Cheers.

Save yourself a whole load of bother and go here...

http://www.c37lg.co.uk/history.aspx

Thanks for that wirey33 as it will be interesting to compare for indifference to what`s on the class37group site and info I`m given, to which any information I receive maybe useful too them as well.

Many Thanks

I too would say that me first port of call would be the WNXX site, but for those who like their information in physical paper form I would point you in the direction of Colin J Marsden's The complete UK Modern Traction Locomotive Directory (no association etc.) ISBN978-0-9557887-8-9 which although first published in 2011 does exactly what it says on the cover, listing every diesel and electric loco and their fates. In many ways similar to Rodger Harris' previous volumes covering UK traction, but without the allocations.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just looked at the list and it is a few years out of date eg 37412 has been scrapped over a year, wnxx has a more uptodate list

Cheers Rob and yes I`ve already run into this problem of conflicting information between sites etc. But Hopefully from a personal point of view and maybe info attained can be useful to others on here or other sites, to try and get up to date as possible. will interesting research but be very time consuming challenge as if there aint enough in life to do lol

many thanks to all posters.

In terms of 37s still on the mainline, then these are the fleet lists (to my knowledge anyway!)

DRS:

37038, 37059, 37069, 37194, 37218, 37259

37401, 3740237405, 37409,37419, 37422, 37423, 37425

37667, 37682, 37688

37601, 37602 ,37603, 37604, 37605, 37606, 37607, 37608, 37609, 37610, 37611, 37612

37703, 37713, 37716, 37718

DRS still own a lot of locos now stripped for spares, such as 261, 510 and a couple of others.

37703 is to be swapped with 37401 as 703 had a shunting accident at Daventry and has bent frames.

Network Rail:

97301, 97302, 97303, 97304

WCRC:

37516, 37518

37669, 37676, 37685

37706, 37712

I thought 37401 had been preserved at the BKR - it's now in Large Logo blue.

401 is coming back to the mainline again, as a direct swap for 37703. as 703 has the bent frames she will go to Bo'ness and 401 will go to DRS. As DRS need 37/4s with ETH, 401 will be better for them for use on charters etc.
