Class 33 Photos

Another double, at the foot of Sole Street bank in Strood.

My notes say 22 July 1984, 33040 + 33209 UP 1905 Mk1 FOs (empties for special for Brands Hatch via Longfield), and they were meant to be the VSOE Pullmans.

I've left the crazy angle, as you can just see a 4-CEP formation in the distance approaching Rochester Bridge Junction, showing how much the line curves round right at the bottom of the 1 in 100 Sole Street bank.
The photo also nicely shows the flatter bodyside of the Hastings gauge 33/2.
 
 
Edit: and another, 25 May 1984, Strood 33059 + 33032 Allington-Westbury ARC empties at 1012, coming from the Maidstone line. The hump is the bridge across the A2/Strood High Street. The line above is from Rochester (on the left) to Sole Street (on the right).

Edit 2: Allington-Westbury again at Cuxton (taken from a foot crossing that's no longer there), 6th June 1984, Cuxton, Rose Cottage 33063 + 33007 UP 1011 ARC PGAs. Behind the photographer is the M2 Medway viaduct, and now also HS1. It's got the wrong headcode. Normally OF/0F.

Moving towards London, another double here in 1985 at Darftord, on the "Brett" hoppers from Cliffe:

Same year, same roll of film, same wagons, here at Hoo Junction, empties heading off to Cliffe (feather on the signal = the Grain/Cliffe branch):

Is that 027 Earl Mountbatten of Burma with the silver roof in the second photo? A personal favourite and usually well turned out when it appeared on a Norwood diagram back in the 80s.

I used to see it quite a bit on the East Grinstead loco hauled peak hour services. Got a shot of it at Upper Warlingham which I think that I may have posted on Rmweb somewhere.

 

I think I started a thread on the LB - Uckfield/East Grinstead loco-hauled services a few years ago, I'll have to look through it for a nostalgia trip. Apart from the odd Brighton-Manchester as far as North Pole, they were about as close to a prestige job that we got at Norwood! Happy days.

Is that 027 Earl Mountbatten of Burma with the silver roof in the second photo? A personal favourite and usually well turned out when it appeared on a Norwood diagram back in the 80s.

Pretty sure it is - looks like it ends in a 7 on the original. Eastleigh ones were quite unusual over on the Eastern side, early 80s, although there was a period where that Westbury-Allington was regularly a pair of Eastleigh 33s, normally 33/0 but on odd occasions a 33/1 would appear.

Bit of an odd one a Class 33 with black snowploughs?? 

 

The photo is of 33056 The Burma Star at Stratford Open Day c.1979/  Selhurst 1980.

I'm wondering if the Black Ploughs were connected to the Funeral Train of The Earl Mountbatten of Burma which the loco hauled in 1979 or were a Southern Region thing in general?

I have seen a few pics of class 33s with black ploughs late 70s early 80s. I think it was just the colour at that point.

 

33111 is a beast It was one of my favourite Pushers back in the day and it was good to get some haulage on the loco back in May.

If anyone could give me info on this photo, I would be delighted.

 

Such as - where is it? And the working?

 

The slide mount gives the loco as 33201 and the date 21st Aug 1985. Did the Cliffe-Uddingston cement trains last that long?

The head code would be "AJ", this being the 20:11 Luton (ex 18:45 Dunstable) To Northfleet working. I was at Hither Green at the time, the location would be on the Midland main line. We only worked as far as Luton and then gave the train over to a Midland loco, normally 25's.

The morning working would be double headed with a load of 2000 tons and arrival time was around 4am.

Having seen the comments regarding 33027 and snowploughs I thought there may be some interest in this shot of a rather unkempt 027, sans ploughs, at  Bradford-on-Avon.   I'm not sure of the exact date but it was sometime in 1988 and coincided with the last day of the timetabled 33-1s on the Portsmouth-Cardiff push-pulls - 158 units (supposedly?) took over the following day.   I have a few other shots of 33s at BoA and at Westbury around the same time I will share when I have them sorted.

A merry Boxing Day to all

 

As promised, a few more shots around Bradford on Avon and Westbury from 1988 -

 

33 009 - possibly on a Weymouth-Bristol service.   I think there were lots of engineering possessions that day as I also have shots of HSTs diverted either down the Berks & Hants or via Thingley Junction (with a reversal at Bradford Jnct) and of 50 007 in GW150 guise as Edward Elgar.

 

33 109 - in push mode on a Cardiff-Portsmouth

 

33 102 - stabled on the south side of Westbury

 

33 110 - just about to move onto the depot at Westbury

Although my 'local' diesel loco, sadly I did not manage to get too many pictures of the 33... I have a couple of scans below:

33019 and 33030 at Woking, sometime in the early 1990s; I'd wager about 1993 (my record-keeping has been very poor).

33046 coupled with 37198 at Eastleigh. Again, I am not too sure of the date, but I seem to recall the 37 being a fairly recent transfer to the southern region.

33009 Walrus in Dutch livery of note is the new banding above and below the windows this seems to be visible in a few photos of the Dutch liveried locos was it just a case of replacing rotten banding or something as a trial?
