Given Rochdale's poor performance in the FA Cup in the 60's, looking for an excuse is a bit difficult!!

I was hoping they may have played one of the East Midlands teams!

Kevin

maybe you could have it going right around the loop to access werneth to drop supporters off as they visit boundary park home of Oldham Athletic ?

believe they actualy managed to make the third round a few times around the period your moddeling

Yes the memories are still very painful to this day. In all seriousness the layout was literally within a few minutes of going straight into a skip on the council dump on the way back from Chasewater. I've Vulcan to gratefully thank for preventing me from doing that and talking me round. They say a little humiliation is good for the soul but that was the most horrendous day of my modelling life.

Well I never realised I was New Hey's saviour to that extent :O  Can't believe, it's already a week ago since the rather enjoyable and somewhat different day of setting things up for Chris to photograph.

Following on from Vulcans post and just to show theres no sentiment in Railway modelling, heres an offshoot of New Hey on its way to the Great Exhibition Hall in the sky. The upturned baseboard to the viewers right of the defunct tumble drier in the picture is all that remains of Belfield Wharf, amy micro layout project that rose out of the ashes of New Heys test bed, Spotland Bridge. The result of a good old clear out of the loft and garage following a bathroom upgrade!

A sense of achievement tonight, Ive just put the last full stop on the article for Model Rail - its a different approach to layout articles, don't expect a treatise of "I used 9mm ply to build the baseboards" and "glued the ballast with diluted PVA with washing up liquid in " et al. As always, I'm trying to break the mould. Ive now seen all of Chris's pictures as well and have to say when it goes in the mag you are in for a visual treat, they really are superb.

Congratulations on your achievement and hoorah for your different approach!

Too many layout articles all use the same format, it will be a joy to read something different - how many times have we read about the eye dropper & the ballast? Grrr!

Cheers,

John E.

Theres a little job Ive been meaning to do since summer but never had the opportunity until today - take a few shots of New Hey station as it is now. I had to divert on a journey back to work in Rochdale today through Owdham via Shaw. A quick dart up Huddersfield Rd, whipped out the mobile, and job done.

Souless and without character unfortunately, and thats just the trams. At least the whorehouse is still there.

Edit, sorry, that should read Warehouse. The other word is the sheep pens up at Ogden Fold.

That's the thing today innit. At least when the railways were built the structures were buildings one could be proud of. Todays achitecture is for today and as you say, soul less with walkways that look as if they lead to cattle pens.

The sheep at Ogden Fold, isn't this the Wellington Leasure Centre.....?

From now on very few updates will appear on these pages but instead will be published on my own site / blog at  http://newheymodelrailway.wordpress.com/

Why?

I guess I can really trace it back to one of the conversations with Chris Nevard whilst he was photographing the layout and one of the areas covered was editorial independence. Where forums are independent, and run by individuals it’s not so much of an issue, but with an article about to appear in Model Rail,  I feel uncomfortable publishing on a forum run by a rival company in the months before the publication of that issue.  A further conversation along the same lines of editorial independence with another regular contributor to magazines the week before Christmas sealed the deal in my mind – he pointed me firmly in the direction of WordPress and that, as they say, was that.

Of course there’s been speculation/ accusation on my thread about toys being thrown out of prams. That is not strictly true, yes I have now totally lost patience with one particular element of the forum but that’s one thing and one thing only, and there are other elements which I’m loath to lose, not least the support I’ve had from Andy York whilst going through the New Hey trauma period (more on that and DCC later!!) watching the saga of Larry Goddard’s “Greenfield” and Jason’s “Bacup” and don’t intend walking away from RM Web, or any other of the 4 forums Im a member of for that matter.

Andy - I feel the main advantage of going 'your own blog' route is that it provides a useful way of consolidating/condensing the New Hey saga. That said, there is little doubt you have experienced far more interaction here on RMweb than you would have done in an external blog. (There are, arguably, pluses and minuses about that interaction process.) I do understand the desire for editorial independence, but I'm a bit surprised you should perceive "a forum run by a rival company" to be an inhibiting factor. Admittedly the amount of Warners/BRM content is now understandably high on RMweb, but I've yet to detect any editorial interference over material that is intended to appear, or happens to end up appearing, in other media avenues.

There is possibly a bit more to the "rival company" than I'm letting on to at this moment Miss Prism, the term "conflict of interest" readily comes to mind. Yes I agree that there may be not as much interaction on the blog site but to be honest - and see Jim SW's New Street posting on this subject, a lot of the audience I'm interested in seeking opinion and views from have moved on as the dynamic of RM Web has changed (thats my perception anyway), and in this respect the minuses you mention come into play.

One of the things I really want to do is not hold back on my views  - see my initial thoughts on "design clever" on the blog (which are quite mild really but in my usual cynicism) - but ultimately when I want to really smash up and spill the vitriol tank I can do without any fear of being moderated banned or anything else!

I appreciate what you are saying about independence etc. Things move on so eventually we have to go the way that we believe in. It's just a pity that all hobbies seem to get caught up in politics, commercialism or back-biting in the end.

Having seen the layout in the flesh I will be continuing to watch out for updates on your own site. Good luck with the article, I'm sure it will be a good read when it comes out.

Hi Andy,

I haven't yet worked out whether I can post on your blog or not so I thought I would post here and hopefully you will see this and can pop the images up on your site (I can email them through if you wish).

Anyway......

I've just got back from a week in Spain and as I'm sure you know, Christmas is celebrated through to the 6th January over there and being a Catholic country, they go for the celebrations in a big way. One of the things that they do is to create large nativity scenes, modelled to quite a high standard. Whilst looking at the one in Elche, I spotted something that made me think of your thread and past events regarding something that you have depicted in 4mm, namely the man in the toilets.

Now this is a model of a highly religious scene which is viewed by tens of thousands of people, in a public place, the main intended audience being children. Kinds of puts your 'man having a wazz' in perspective' :D

All the best for 2013,

Jason.

Yep, the Girlfriend (who is from Elche - now lives in Oxford) told me it was traditional. I saw the Nativity scene in Alicante as well, although never spotted the 'feature' there.

Hi Jason

You can certainly send messages on the blog for approval but the photos need to come through me - However I can use this in my next post  so that I can have a rant at the national viewers and listeners society of railway modellers lol - Its not copying that easily so send it my e mail addy - which is on the blog anyway! Will be doing it in a few days time, just put a posting up on converting locos to EM.

I don't really know about "all hobbies", just railway forums that I have experience of. There tend to be a really broad mix of folk, with an equally broad range of skills, abilities and opinions. It seems the hardest thing in the world for some folk to apply tolerance and respect, which upsets the apple cart and people move on to other locations and mediums.

Good luck Andy and will be watching the blog regularly

Cheers for letting me have a play Andy, I really enjoyed it. Layout is looking as good as ever, although I never actually got to see it from the front :D

p.s. Did they manage to sneak that pannier tank back on? ;)

A pleasure to let you play - hope we didn't detain you for too long, mind you, you did seem to be enjoying yourself AND no errors so you are booked again for operating duties!! Black and Decker boy did manage to sneak it (the pannier that is) on once or twice, at least its in NCB livery not that abberation based in Swindon. As I said to Phil and Martyn on the way down the A34 at Didcot as we crossed the main line "I think I've just crossed the Rubicon".
