RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted March 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 7, 2014 Nice to see a fair bit of O gauge interest - is it becoming more popular?
Kenton
Too weathered for my liking - I'll avoid this issue having purchased the last 3, perhaps that is sufficient for one year.
RMweb Gold Happy Hippo Posted March 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 7, 2014 It always makes me smile when I see 'Reader's Layouts'. Makes me think that the layouts that are featured, are built by those who do not read BRM!

Swifty11
Hi, Looks good! As a possible improvement could you say what era each layout is set in please? As I am considering purchasing a copy but don't know if there is any modern image? Water Orton sounds interesting. Kind regards, Tom Edited March 13, 2014 by Swifty11

Andrew P
Hi Andy, the Crosti featured, is it a DJH kit? It probably is Ian, I'm not sure as I think there are about 3 or 4 Members in the Club with them. Andy

Andy Y
Recently I was invited to do 'judge' the layouts at the Milton Keynes club's show and one of the layouts I chose was Wayne Webb's 'Dentdale' which is featured in this month's mag, it really does show the potential of N gauge with a 'less is more' approach to the amount of track on the boards in conjunction with some grand scenery. It really is an attractive layout. The scenic elements hang together really well and I particularly liked the derelict barn, the insanity and dedication shows with the dry stone walling which is made from budgie grit! Hopefully a few other people have got to see this layout at Stafford and Milton Keynes already.
Andy Y
I had a great evening photographing Brian Hughes' 'Water Orton' a while back, it's a proper modellers layout in my view as Brian took to replicating the railway that he grew up with. Despite some rationalisation to get it to fit into it's loft it's instantly recognisable as Water Orton and he's gone to town with adapting RTR and building kits to fill in the gaps, sadly there wasn't space to do justice to his collection within the article but it does give a taste. As it was nighttime up in the loft I thought it worth a shot of his Blue Pullman fresh out of the Met Camm works on delivery to Derby; unfortunately in print a lot of the detail has been lost and it looks a bit muddy so I think it's fair to give a proper airing here. Brian's a great chap and I look forward to a further visit to sit up there with a cuppa watching trains go round and putting the world to rights!

For me these pictures come across so much better than in the magazine; they seem much sharper IMO and show off some beautiful scenic modelling to good advantage...I would love to see it in the flesh but the only show I can do this year is a certain one in September; perhaps you've sent an invite...? Andy Y
perhaps you've sent an invite...? Sadly the guys are committed to the N Gauge show at Leamington that weekend but I can promise some other really good N gauge layouts are on the bill.
RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted March 20, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 20, 2014 Just wanted to raise a point (pun intended) regarding the pizza layout; I've just seen a picture of the finished article on another thread, and have to say I really don't like the way the point has been assembled at all; it looks like one of those you get on the 'round the Christmas tree' trainset ornaments. Could Phil not cut-and-shut an proprietory point to have it actually working or at least assemble the parts to have a more realistic angle to it? For me this ruins an otherwise interesting and good-looking project... David

Andy Just had another look this evening, I really must give Andy Y another lesson in how a Crosti boiler works - he tried to put smoke out of the wrong chimney on my Summat Colliery article too

Could Phil not cut-and-shut an proprietory point to have it actually working or at least assemble the parts to have a more realistic angle to it? For me this ruins an otherwise interesting and good-looking project... David I could have done that. I could even have used a Busch RTR point as supplied- but with both options in the region of £38 I thought I'd show another way of doing this. Z gauge track is scarry expensive and even I'm wary of attacking it with a saw. Having started this, I discovered that making fake points on plastic track is harder than expected. If I'd been able to work on PCB sleepers, it would have been MUCH easier. The angle is tight but no worse than the static versions I've aquired from Germany. Sadly, the rails on these are much finer than the metal track otherwise I'd have incorportated them and saved myself some work.
