What coaching stock ran on the M&C in the 50s & 60s?

Recommended Posts

The Maryport and Carlisle was one of the few routes that BR Mk1s were banned from due to very tight clearances. Can anybody tell me what stock actually ran over it in the late 50s and early 60s?

I assume that before that the DMUs were introduced it would have been LMS 57' suburban stock (or possibly the 54'). Did any corridor stock run over this line (if only on the occasional excursion)?

Pre the Derby lightweights, regular trains were loco hauled. From photos they appear to be Stanier period 3 and maybe some Period 1 corridor coaches, with various 2-6-4 tanks in charge, 2P's, or even 4F's. I could be wrong, but I don't think the Stanier coaches were specifically narrowed to work the M&C; but I believe the door windows were fitted with bars to prevent passengers leaning out. I clearly remember a school trip in the early sixties, in which we travelled from Whitehaven to Carlisle in Stanier coaches - behind Jubilee 45729, 'Fearless'.
