Bonanza of Bachmann Brake Coach Conversions

Recommended Posts

Ok, probably not the most original topic ever, but I finally got round to working on the 12 BSKs I have earmarked for conversion into electrification, breakdown, research and DCE coaches. I hope to post some pictures of the work in progress but I want to start with a question.

I wanted to do my second model of Prometheus some 20 years after my first attempt with a Lima coach, I thought I could use this picture  http://www.traintesting.com/images/inside%20Prometheus1.jpg to do add a semi-authentic interior, however this image also appears in a book (25 years of railway research) flipped horizontally and there are subtle things that make me think that is the correct orientation, in which case the photo is not, in fact, of Prometheus because the corridor would be on the wrong side. Has anyone seen the interior to confirm or deny whether this IS Prometheus or even whether the layout is enough like it that it could be used as a reference?

Thanks

Chris H

That’s interesting as I am also planning to model Prometheus and have purchased a donor vehicle but couldn’t relate this photo to the outside shots.

it is presented on one website as being the inside of Prometheus but it would be more logical if it was another vehicle.

The main issue I had is that the roof access hatch would be located behind the door.

Darrel, If you don’t have any photos of the inside do you know the general internal layout of Prometheus? which may answer the question posed by Chris

Tried flipping the image but it is not conclusive.

I have been looking for something which may give a clue but cant spot anything.

This photo shows the roof access and what appears to be an internal door which would match the internal image (although the number of windscreen wipers don't match)

On the website traintesting.com is the follwoing entry which comments on the door being on the left

The pantograph viewing window and instrumentation area during in what looks like a staged picture. Note the soldering iron hanging up and the amplifier on the desk top and the obligatory R&DD 'uniform' of a sports jacket.

The door on the left lead through to the kitchen area and the roof access ladder

the next picture is then said to be looking in the oposite direction

It's over 25 years since I set foot on 'Prometheus' but I can confirm that the guys in the photo did work on it and not on 'Mentor'. They would, however, have also worked on 'Prometheus's' predecessor which was Lab 26 and based at Rugby Testing Station before moving to Derby.

If it is flipped horizontally the man's jacket in the background should have his breast pocket on the right, or specifically, will not be on the left; so can you see a breast pocket?  Very difficult even when expanding the view.

I cannot see any breast pockets on either the jacket or the lab coat suggesting the pic in '25 years of Railway Research' is problably the right was round. If it is Lab 26, the corridor door is on the correct side as that coach had the flat roof over the brake area whereas Lab 6 had it over the compartments.

How about the sliding windows which on Mk1 stock were divided into four approximately equal parts. The windows in the photo don't appear to match Mk1s.

Great find Gary. In the third window is that a lab area partition or a corridor wall? It's all useful stuff, as is the confirmation that the small roof windows were raked back at the edges (previous photos I had seen were inconclusive). It's also the clearest shot I've seen of the roof detail, last time around I modelled this area as flat and white (which often bothered me).

Bruce, the sliding windows had been an issue for me too, I wondered if maybe they were partway open which would have put a vertical bar in an appropriate position but I think you're right and Lab 26 is the most likely candidate.
