roy-c
Am fortunate in living next door to someone with a keen interest in trains who has his own 00 layout Am going to start purchasing some items to run on this - this is my first tentative step Any recommendations for good Bachmann (or Hornby or any other) Brake Vans - the period is late 50s/ early 60s with an LMS flavour Thanks for reading and even better replying
Poor Old Bruce
Roy, This looks to be your first post - welcome to the asylum! Bachmann do a BR Goods Brake Van in various guises but for 1950s/60s you need to look for stuff marked for "Period 5" in Bachmann's system although there would still be some residual "Period 4" stuff about. Brown vans were equipped with vacuum and hand brakes while grey ones were hand brake only. They also do an LNER van which was the predecesor of the BR one and a short van which resembles an older LNER design. Hornby do the older LMS GBV which lasted well into the 1960s and beyond, again in brown or grey, and I have one of their LBSCR vans in BR brown livery but carrying the number of a BR-built van! In BR days any wagon could end up practically anywhere. HTH Richard
34theletterbetweenB&D
Roy, If you can find a retailer with Bachmann 37-528, that's a BR standard van in grey, with a 'London Midland' allocation above the number. (Although the Bachmann wagon range is mainly trustworthy, avoid the short ex-LNER van to prevent loss of cred; it's a badly compromised model dimensionally.) The Hornby LMS design van is basically an accurate model, but unfortunately comes with the old style large couplers moulded onto the chassis. Check friend's layout to see what coupler system he is using. The older large coupling does not mix happily with the small couplings offered on the more recent introductions. roy-c
The latest batch of Bachmann BR brake vans is being discussed on this thread: http://www.rmweb.co....mercial-brakes/ Thanks very much for pointing out the current discussion I appreciate that, on all forums, newbies join in and ask the same question yet again ... I had done quite a bit of searching but I guess I didn't use the correct words Will study that one now - great stuff
RMweb Premium romley midland Posted January 30, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 30, 2010 Roy, The Hornby LMS design van is basically an accurate model, but unfortunately comes with the old style large couplers moulded onto the chassis. Check friend's layout to see what coupler system he is using. The older large coupling does not mix happily with the small couplings offered on the more recent introductions. The couplings aren't moulded onto the chassis, they are in the Hornby clip in pockets (ex airfix etc, NOT NEM) and can easily be chnged for the small tension locks found on most models nowaday using which Hornby supply as spares, R8099. Hope this helps, Richard
Pennine MC
I had done quite a bit of searching but I guess I didn't use the correct words Title now edited, a bit anyway Concur with the others Roy - it's the best RTR general service brakevan you'll find, and probably the cheapest as well. It's only the plastic handrails that can be a bit iffy sometimes, but it beats soldering them
