Deneside - BR North Eastern Region

Now that the station has a name I might add some running in boards to the platform ends.  In preparation, I have at last gotten round to painting the water columns.  After a lot of research trawling through google images and elsewhere I have now painted them matt green - there is a glimpse of one this colour on the NYMR.  Here they are having had one coat with adjacent arrival/departure activity.

If its any help, the ones on Newcastle Central, (see my profile pic, behind the Deltic) were painted what looked like battleship grey.

Like the Name b t w.

I thought of a Central too - they were grey, but it was a matt metallic type of paint possibly some sort of aluminium base which had been brighter and had weathered down.

For some time now I have been researching station roofs or canopies that might be used on Deneside.  I wanted something that was "signature" North Eastern, preferably something in Durham.  My NERA publication "A History of North Eastern Railway Architecture, Volume 3 - Bell and Beyond" was full of lots of inspiration but my full attention was eventually drawn to the roof at West Hartlepool station.  There was an immediate emotional connection because this was usually the station where we alighted when I was a lad to visit relatives in Easington having come up from Kings Cross.  But, being a little lad, I never looked up at the platform canopies so the book and subsequent google image searches were very revealing.

It seems that the roof/canopies have been severely messed about with over the years.  What started off as a complete roof over the through platforms was later much modified into something like this.

post-1115-0-02887800-1511113663.jpg

I liked the look of the girders over the two tracks, the overall roof having been replaced by pitched roof canopies only covering the platforms.  It seems that one slope is glazed and the other isn't over each platform, a feature I have not been aware of before either at West Hartlepool or elsewhere.  Please note the COVHOPS behind the Q6 which I quite like the look of and thought a rake would be nice until I found out the price of each Bachmann version!  But I digress.

My track layout is not the same as at WH so after much guesswork and trying to scale off dodgy photos and drawings with no scale I dived into the tusty TurboCAD and came up with the following potential structure to model.

post-1115-0-96458000-1511114124.jpg

You'll be pleased to know that I felt a mock-up coming on so some progress has been made today involving mounting card, glue sticks, drinking straws, the hot glue gun and a lot of mess.  Pics to follow probably tomorrow.  The final model will be made from Evergreen or Plastruct plastic sections and will probably take months to construct but, hey, once it's done, it's done.

Regards,

Brian.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

I have at last come up with a name for the "new" layout so expect the name of this thread to change soon.  I'll also post a potted history of the line represented by the model.  Hopefully the name I have come up with will help signify its intended location somewhere on the north east coast.

Best Regards,

Brian.

Agh, so that's where you got to, changed it whilst I was on Holiday and away from the internet, clever move, BUT I've found you again at last, nice matey, I like it.

Sorry about that Andy.  I've been dily-dalying about names for a while and at last thought s*d it, that's the name I'm going for, lets make it official so to speak.  I'm sure you enjoyed your holiday though.

Best Regards,

Brian.

Tynemouth has a very close relation to your roof, and it’s well looked after these daysattachicon.gifAF4648B1-030F-4482-854D-D0257E8844ED.jpeg

I think that would have been how the WH roof looked before modification with fully glazed pitch roof bays the ridges at right angles to the running lines.  This looks even more work in 4mm scale than the option I've taken but I did consider something like this.  Thanks for the pic and your continued interest.

Regards,

Brian.

I've had a lot of fun making the mock up and I'm quite pleased at how it's turning out.  Firstly, there now follows some dodgy phone pics of the main support structure comprising the columns (drinking straws) and roof girders (mounting board).

Then I added folded paper pitched canopies.

I need to complete the canopies and run some trains in and out so that I can be convinced that uncoupling using my manual "spade" uncoupler is still possible and that there isn't too much structure in the way, although I am quite interested in installing a remote uncoupler on the lines of the Heathcote version, see http://heathcote-electronics.co.uk/uncoupler_oo_gauge.html if there's a problem.

Brian.

I see the tide was in on that  visit, Brian. . . and did you take any shots to the south across Teesbay?

I don't think I'll be bothering now till next year . . I can't take the biting winds these days.

By the way, I learned to swim round about there. . .the breaking waves were a dirty grey colour. . no, not from me, .  from the pit waste

John

I went sailing with college in Sunderland harbour and fell in - or more accurately jumped over the side into what I though was 18 inches of water that turned out to be five feet.  I managed not to swallow any but I had what I thought was an oil slick on my T-shirt for several months until I gave up trying to wash it out and binned it (quite a financial wrench for a student in the seventies...)

The harbour water at South Shields was no cleaner.

The station platform canopies mock up is now complete - see below. EDIT - apologies for not removing the coaster from this shot.

The mock up is modular so there are some ripples as it where in the appearance but it gives me an excellent idea how the finished article will look.  Now, I only have to sort out a way of constructing the proper version which won't drive me round the bend!

In the meantime, A2 "Happy Knight" was seen arriving with a parcels train.

The J39 was acting as station pilot and was called to remove the parcel rake so that the A2, using the crossover between the platforms could access the shed to be turned etc...

Shortly thereafter, a K3 arrives on a goods train.

I could bore you further with the goings on at Deneside but I'll sign off for now.

Brian.

I really like the station roof and your pics of the A2 and parcels trains. I don’t think I could ever be bored of pics of Eastern Region stock coming and going, especially on a layout as nice as yours Brian!

Cheers

Tony

I'm pretty sure no one is bored of photos of this charming layout.

You might get bored of taking them when you could be playing trains though, that would be entirely understandable...

I'm not at all familiar with the NE, but that canopy certainly places the layout well away from the south. It is very definitely an atmospheric layout you're building.

I could watch A2s all night...

G'Day Folks.

I do like that roof, has a good vibe to it.

Also like all 'Eastern' loco's.

Encouraged by some of the kind comments above, I decided to get out some of the big stuff this afternoon :) .

The line controller has a loco crisis on his hands - there is a shortage of the usual K1 or D49 locos to handle the passenger traffic calling for drastic measures.  Fortunately A3 "St Gatien" was available to cover seen here arriving at Deneside...

First away after the incoming A3 and train have cleared the station throat is A4 "Andrew K McKosh".

The station pilot having repositioned the A3's train in the adjoining platform recently vacated by the A4, the A3 proceeds to the turntable to be turned...
