D109 drawing

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am planning to chop an airfix E140 into pieces and stick it back together as a D109. As far as I can tell this involves reducing the compartment spacing either side of the 1st and then restoring the length elsewhere. Question is where is the length restored. I have yet to find a published drawing.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Adrian

There is a good photo, with the brake end on the left, and small dimensioned drawings in Russell's Great Western Coaches Appendix vol 1. From the end to the luggage doors is approx the same as the model (both sides). Luggage doors to guard's door ditto. Guard's door recess to first compartment quarterlight is approx 17mm (at 4mm scale), whereas on the model it's 13mm. The intervening window will need filling in, both sides I think but definitely on the side shown in the photo. The van compartment has end windows but there isn't an end elevation. The window is approx 9mm high and approx 12mm above the headstock; width N/K but probably the same as on a slip coach. Hope this helps. If I'd fetched the engineer's rule as well as the book and model I could have been a bit more accurate, but the drawings are small (1/141 ish).

Hi Penrhos

This is part of an investigation to determine if Comet sides or a full Comet kit would be easier. At the moment it looks like three cuts to the body to get the compartment lengths right but this then requires two roof strips to be removed and replaced. All the airfix roof vents look to be wrong for a D109 which appears to have a mirror image of the roof compared to the b set model. I will need to check a photo on this.

If I used sides I would avoid the body cuts but then 4 roof strips would be wrong as would the roof vents. The underframe, bogie and end detail requires the same amount of work. On the other hand the sides would look better once all the door handle cut outs had been sorted. Glazing probably easier with the sides.

My balance of opinion at the moment is to carry on and see where I get to especially as I have more b sets than I know what to do with.

  • 3 years later...

Hi again

3.5 years later I have a modified body being painted, a detailed under frame and some detailed bogies.

THEN I GET THE CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE:

All the photos I have seen show the right side (van at rear). This side does not have a guards window. For reference the photos are in Russell, on the HMRS website and in the flyer issued by Lionheart to advertise their product. I have never seen a photo of the other side, although I think there is a video somewhere showing a non corridor brake this on a Welsh branch. I though this was a D109 and it showed no window on the other side. I now realise that it may have been a D117, which has no window of te left side.

So can anyone confirm if the D109 had a guards window on the left side (with the van at the rear) like the E140/145 or if there were no guards windows either side.

Thanks

Oakhill
