Not sure if I'm starting something that I shouldn't but thought I would share it for people not on Facebook. there is a picture uploaded on Facebook by the Hornby official page that shows a cad photo that looks like a bogie for a GWR king. They have said can you guess what it is. They have not said either way as of yet

Cheers Neil

It was a year of fire.....

A year of steam.....

A year western dreams...

A year where everything wonderful was duplicated.....

I have heard that God moves in mysterious ways, but god's wonderful?

Yes you are absolutely right, the cad image does look like a king bogie, correct number of bolts in the correct position. So is this a spoiler for the Hattons loco?

Take a look and judge for yourselves.

I was going to say 'really? Which bit of the king bogie? But it appears to be whatever gubbins sits at the centre of the bogie sideframe. This could be interesting. However given Hornby's present form, and DJM's track record, my money is erring towards DJM, where i know I will get bearings, and minimal moulded detail. Also if the CAD is what I think it is, the shape of the spigot slightly wrong - the flange that appears to come off the main casting is too pronounced, certainly when compared to pics of KE1.

This said, if the King is up to Castle quality, there could be a race on. However if Hornby were seriously produceing a King, would it not have been announced in Jan with the rest? Had it been announced, Hattons would have been less likely to go ahead... Hornby's delay has likely eroded their market share. Is this our fault for criticising Hornby (and Bachmann's) long lead time, leading to a temptation to 'announce when ready' e.g. 2-BIL. Oops.

If it is I hope it is full spec and not a railroad/special edition such as P2 and DoG. The Castle and Grange show what a great job Hornby can do with GWR models.

I won,t even begin to speculate odds on this one. It could be P2 standard, it could be Castle standard with the current model going to railroad.

Well, it seems they have a CAD drawing for one part and maybe we will see the EP just before Christmas for next years program.

Dear me, talk about buses!! If Hornby are doing a new King and are dropping a spoiler folling the DJM/Hattons announcement then it is great news for GWR fans. If Hornby know that DJM are going out to make a model with the wow factor then somehow I don't think Hornby will do this to Railroad standards, especially when their existing King is more than good enough to sell as a Railroad model at a discount. Given the track record of DJ at Dapol (Western, NBL Type 2, Beattie well tank etc) I also believe the DJM/Hattons model will be a cracking model. This could be very interesting, and if it is true (and given we have already seen Heljan and DJM both announce a competing release, the LMS diesels from Bachmann and Dapol/Hattons etc it seems a fairly common occurence to get duplicate releases) then the real winner will be GWR enthusiasts.

Never mind a duplicate King, I wish they would attend to their Large Prairie and 14xx, as they've never really made their own just re-worked the old Airfix versions to death.

I'd rather Hornby started with a blank piece of paper if they are going to do the 41xx/51xx/61xx. That Airfix model was released when I was still at school.

I'm not disagreeing. I think my original Airfix one had solid pony wheels and had no grasp whatsoever of the concept of slow running.

Question......exactly WHEN was this CAD scanned ? Is this current,ongoing.....or archive....perhaps activated in response to the Hattons/DJM announcement ? Hornby must surely be aware of Steam 's interest in the production of a new King to replace the current model, having already produced a Castle and a Star for them.....always assuming that this IS what members think it is and not a red herring.

The announcement yesterday may thus have forced them to declare their hand early. If so,it proves they're not asleep, which is encouraging in a backhanded sort of way.Just hope it doesn't backfire. Is duplication in the present climate necessarily a good thing for manufacturers and retailers? Maybe we're about to find out.I hope it will not be a case of "Last man standing".

If Hornby really are going to make a King to Castle\Star standards it is hard to see how they will be able to bring it to market for less than the Hattons pre order price for the DM version. Hornby may however be significantly further down the development path - maybe this was the planned new release for the 2015 catalogue?

My Aug/Sept 'Hornby Collector' (yes, I'll apologize now!) arrived yesterday. Pages 12 & 13 carry an article on the Hornby models of some preserved Kings, Castles and a Star.  Their latest King is R3102, 6023 King Ed II, released in 2012.  There is no mention in the mag of any imminent planned release of another King.

However, the larger-than-life front cover picture is of the blue 6023 with a very visible 32A shedplate  :O. Do I correctly recall a fairly recent release of an Eastern Region loco with an 81A plate - if so, it seems that finely detailed models can produce their own sets of problems on the production line!  Someone should have gone to S------vers! :jester: .

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see! Long live the King!

Richard

When I purchased Lode Star from STEAM back in December I asked what their next model was going to be.

I was told they were hoping for it to be King George V to commemorate the return of 6000 to Swindon in 2015.

They were insisting on all-new tooling, and "just" had to decide the livery.

With the CAD drawing it appears that progress is definitely being made, and perhaps Hornby have several months lead over DJM/Hattons.

Anyway, I am hoping for a couple of cracking models.  You can't have too many Kings on a layout :locomotive:

If it is for a 'King' (and it doesn't look quite right to me but then it also doesn't match any pictures I can find of the buffers on a D16/3, a J15, or a 700) then I think the answer might well, or might not, become apparent on 13th September in a well known town in Wiltshire when a certain museum announces its next model co-operation with Hornby.  Actually the vertical rivets do look right so it could well be for a piece of co-operation which I heard about at Steam sometime back , their having done the other two GWR 4 cylinder 4-6-0s.
