Ray5311
Short report after my first Area Group Meeting in September. Tuesday 9th September 2014 We had a successful and enjoyable Area Group meeting, the agenda for the night was as planned. Chris Budd gave an demonstration of soldering trackwork, especially the crossing vee using silver soldering techniques, now we all need to make another special jig as he showed us. Dave Hawkins, Phil Chudley and Jonathan Buckie described three different ways of make buildings for the Eastwood Layout (see photo of a radial tank in front of the Eastwood signal box, complete with full interior details - that no one can see. (but we know it's there). Running rights were exercised on Eastwood and Hope under Dinmore layouts (one week before going to Expo EM North). Unfortunately no visitors brought any stock with them, so please can I encourage members to bring some models to show us and to run if possible. If you cannot stand constructive critisism beware you might get blunt recommendations. Tuesday 14th October 2014 The second meeting will again be at the South Hants MRC Club Rooms at Fort Widley, Portsdown Hill Road, Portsmouth (see http://www.shmrc.co.uk/location.html for directions or contact me). , The Theme for the night is Railway Models of Southern England from LSWR to SW Trains and all stops in between. At the time of writing this report, three exhibition layouts will be available to view and to use as "test tracks". Lee on the Solent, end to end (S4) http://www.shmrc.co.uk/layouts/Lee/Lee.htm and Ogden Fold (S4) this is being prepared for the East of England exhibition (18 October 2014 - 19 October 2014 at East of England Showground, Peterborough, PE2 6XE) plus Eastwood S4. In the early evening Ray Hodson will demonstrate how an RSU works and how to use an RSU in the "Building Room" for those interested. Later on Dave Smith will be describing his stock as used on his Southern Area Layout Brighton Road (EM). Tuesday 11th November 2014 We can now confirm that we have been invited to the Southampton Model Railway Society Clubrooms. Unit 1b,3b,5b & 6b Kemps Quay Industrial Park, Quayside Road, Southampton, SO18 1BZ. (See http://southamptonmodelrailwaysociety.wordpress.com/contact-us-2/) The speakers will be Phil Hall discussing RTR conversions and Alison Barker one of the few Ladies active in Model Railway (and Co-Chairman, SMRS) Other facilities are operational OO and O gauge layouts plus N gauge under construction. There are DVD and VHS players and we probably have access to a digital projector. More info to follow. Tea/coffee and biscuits should be available at all meetings. At the end of the evening members are invited to join the Portsmouth locals at "The Churchillian" next to the clubrooms before they go home, or in Southampton we will have to find a watering hole. Update 13-10-14 The Ogden Fold layout is fully erected prior to the East of England BRM exhibition next week end. The layout should be running as at the exhibition for testing and if you want photographing. Just another thing to look forward to. As all the L&Y stock will be on Ogden layout then the Eastwood layout will be using BR Steam and Green Diesels plus what ever you bring with you. Visiting stock welcome. See you next Tuesday Ray
