As a means of continuing the hardy perennial personnel carrier topic, while looking for something else the other day, I turned up the following links which may be of interest to those whose interests lie with these things. All a bit out of my modelling era, but never mind...

First, assorted (mostly the same Dodge I think) at Redbridge, near Southampton:

http://railwayphotos.../p55231340.html

There seems to be a Leyland of some description in here as well.

Again at Redbridge, something different:

http://nevardmedia2..../p11650273.html (Odd bodied TK)

http://nevardmedia2..../p10900698.html (TK again, rear view)

http://graham1740.fo.../p29235182.html

And finally. Joy of joys, a Morris Marina (I'd forgotten what these looked like...)

If I may add to your posting, the vehicles are from the top.

A Leyland Roadrunner 14 seat personnel carrier and the rear of a Ford Escort Combi (estate without windows)

A Dodge Commando 14 seat P C.

Leyland Roadrunner again.

Back end of Leyland or Dodge.

Dodge again.

The odd bodied Bedford TK is a S&T personnel and tool van as modelled by Oxford Diecast.

The same TK along with a Dodge P C.

A Dodge P C.

And the Marina Van, a very rare machine as in those days most vans were the cheaper Bedford HA. Later BR bought lots of the later Morris Ital vans.

Thanks Merfyn, as I said, a bit out of period for me, even if it is one I can actually (just) remember. This is a bit more like it:

http://freepages.nostalgia.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cyberheritage/oldy47.jpg

It appears (much to my surprise) that in the background of this shot is a Scammell Townsman of all things. A bit out of character for west Cornwall I would have thought...

They got everywhere- just not very quickly....They would presumably have been delivered originally by rail- I've seen shots of the flat trailers used with them on Lowfits, but never the tractor units. I happened upon the cab of one, along with several Scarabs of varying pedigree, when visiting my spiritual adviser, the Rev Lewis, in Swansea a few weeks ago. They were 'stored' (using the loosest definition of the term) in the old Aluminium Wire and Cable works, just off Fabian Way.

I remember a number of Townsmen traveling by rail in 5 plank open wagons in the late 70s. They passed through North Wales I believe on route to Dublin North Wall yard for internal use.

Yes most road motors would have been delivered by rail, but photos of such are very rare. Certainly from Watford to St.Ives. The Townsman would be ideal vehicle for the narrow roads of the Cornish town.

I was just surprised to see such a new vehicle shifting freight at a station where goods facilities had been withdrawn in 1963! Or indeed that far from head office. Here's another from somewhere on the WR (not sure where, the picture has no caption).

Can I clarify the situation Adam.

In the far off days, freight and parcels were seperate businesses. What freight that did last at the end of the 60s transfered to National Carriers. The van at St Ives was therfore carying the parcel traffic which lasted till the early 80s

Merfyn.

ps the shot of JLE10D I have seen before, super close up, would love to know where it was taken.

Thanks, that explains it, and is very useful to know for modelling purposes. The building behind seems frustratingly familiar, but railway architecture has that effect. Since the remainder of the photos in the collection feature Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, somewhere in one of those counties would seem logical, though goodness alone knows where.

EDIT: Link now corrected

I've encountered a few more from the ever interesting Chris Hodge photo collection - but unfortunately can't link to them directly:

If you go to 'The Latest 500' and have a look at the first two selections from Coventry and from Holborn, there's a couple of interesting bit's and bobs- an Austin Loadstar tractor unit and a Karrier Bantam (note how small it is) both in the Yellow BR livery with 'flying crate' branding.

Hi Adam

I have been on the Chris Hodge site a few times and found lots of interesting shots.

Had a look through yesterday but couldn't find the Austin Loadstar, I've never come across a yellow one yet. Any more clues where to find it please ?

Merfyn.

Would it be this one? :

I haven't much intention of modelling many of these, but here's another, rear view of several engineering dept. vehicles in olive green at Norwich, courtesy of John Turner's photo collection. Further identification welcome but I think, from left:

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/53amodels/picture/D2032-NR-0870.jpg

A pair of Bedford CA vans, two, possibly more FG type personnel carriers, then the rather fine signal, probably another FG and then another, unidentifiable (to me at any rate) lorry with a tail board and roller shutter (rather than the cupboard doors of the others). Note the yellow stripes below the doors, the British Rail lettering and the yellow stripes below the rear doors of each vehicle.

Thanks to Andy for locating the URL for the Chris Hodge photo...

Hi Adam

Yes a rather good view of a number of the green livery (1963-1970) vehicles. The one on the right is one of the Bedford TK S&T wagons as modelled by Oxford Diecast. I found that shot useful for modelling as it's the only one ever seen with the yellow rear panel.

Agreed Bernard, I would imagine probably more likely an Ital. BR had very few Marina vans because the Bedford HA was cheaper. They started buying Itals in bulk about the time that Bedford dropped the HA, along with a few Mk1 Astras. Not until the Mk2 Astra did BR go back to Bedfords in a big way. A huge improvment to the HA, so impressed with our one at work that I went and bought an estate.

The Marina/Ital in the photo has the telephone handset on the door, indicating it being a S&T van.

That N62ESX is in fact the newest BR design yellow personnel carrier / tool van that I have ever seen. The previous newest one I know of was L reg. The Edinburgh (SX) registration is no help, but I wonder what the origin of it was ?

Very late in the day as BR was buying very few road motors prior to privitisation.post-1625-12579710448242_thumb.jpg

Some great pics and links here, I've been looking for pictures of BR Marinas and Astras for a while, perhaps for a future project! The tractor at Kyle of Lochalsh was of interest too, as I'm modelling the station - although at a later date than that photo. It would make an interesting modelling project though, I wonder if a Faller car system car (or tractor) would be strong enough to push an OO wagon around?! Thought you might be interested to see a picture of my current van: http://newimages.fotopic.net/?iid=ywj1wt&outx=600&noresize=1&nostamp=1

Cheers,

Rick
