This is my first post, as I am a brand new member. I recently purchased a test shot of the newly revamped moulds of the GT3 from Golden Arrow Models. I discovered that it came without the etched cab windows, cab number plate and other fittings that apparently were available at one time. On enquiry, Chris at Golden Arrow mentioned that I should look on RMweb for "Craigwelsh", as someone who used to supply those supplementary bits several years back. Does anyone know of him or know any alternate source of GT3 detailing parts?

i built one a number of years back and scratch built the missing bits, i have not seen the new mould does it have the chequer plate on the running plate? i did not fit it to mine as i did not see it in photos but then had corespondance from a gentleman who had worked upon GT3 in its brief life. If i can offer any help on colours etc i am happy to help as best i can.

I have the set of etches and cd - they were produced back in 2009 by Ian Macdonald of the Huddersfield Railway Modellers. I think he did a thread, possibly in the 'old' RMWeb archive, about what he did and then made a batch of etches available. Haven't though seen any reference to these for some while so might have been a one-off.

Thanks Richard for the reply!! I am at work but will check the chequer plate on the new casting when I get home and get back to you. I did see a very good model of a GT3 in Gauge 3, and it did have the chequer plate running plate nicely modelled, so I assume the builder must have verified this detail as the rest of the model looked spot on...

Ian from Huddersfield RM is "Macgeordie" on RMweb, and so you could try a pm to him.

John.

Thanks John!!

The etchings are well worth obtaining.

Don't rush to start on the model, and certainly don't use a Black 5 or Standard 5 chassis - they're both far from being the correct wheelbase.

A little patience may result in the construction being somewhat easier, as several useful items are under development.

Can't say any more at present - but watch this space.

Regards,

John Isherwood.

Good evening everyone,

Oddly enough - in view of the first comment on this thread - this is also my very first post as another new member of RMweb!  It seems that GT3 has quite a following.

I joined this excellent website in order to ask essentially the same question as NorthLondon had in his original post.  I hope the individuals concerned don't mind, but rather than sending private messages individually (as, indeed, I may have to do if they don't happen to see this post), I thought I'd first pose these questions in public so that others can add any additional information.

My questions are:

- NorthLondon: Was Ian from Huddersfield able to supply you with etchings?  If not, have you found an alternative source?

- John Isherwood: Are you able to reveal more about these "mystery items"?

- And one for the forum: Can anyone recommend an experienced modeller whom I could commission to build this kit for me?  The simple truth of the matter is that I'm returning to model railways after an involuntary haitus of several years (I haven't had space in my home for a layout until recently), and I know my limits.  I can handle buildings and scenery, but I fear that constructing a detailed kit of this nature is beyond my level of skill!  GT3 would be the pride of my fleet, and consequently, I'd rather pay somebody who knows what they're doing to make a really good job of the locomotive, rather than stubbornly attempt it myself and be forever dissatisfied with the result.

Any information or advice on any of the above points would be most gratefully received - many thanks in anticipation!

Gordon, it should not be beyond you, it uses a r-t-r chassis and the parts just need cleaning up and details added. If you want to add etched components then they can be fitted after scraping away the moulded detail.  I built one written up in BRM and there have been several other articles on how to do it.

If you still think it is beyond you i could build one, but i live in the states so you would have to source all the components, there may be others in the UK whom you would find it easier to get bits to and from.

Gordon,

I can reveal one of the mystery items - see Sheet BL149 at http://www.cctrans.org.uk/latest.htm .

As to the other item - not at this time, except to warn that the RTR chassis recommended for this kit does NOT have the correct wheelbase.

John Isherwood,

I might have to buy some of John's transfers (and finish the loco)

Here she is running on my scratchbuilt Rugby Test Plant.

The model is scratchbuilt, including the chassis. As John has mentioned it does not match any of the RTR chassis. Nor did the real match the spare BR standard Class 4 it is often said to have been running on. :O

Going totally off topic! Clive - I like your rolling road. The idea of aluminium angle as the base is so simple, but I'm intrigued how you made the rollers. Could you enlighten us, please?

Hi John, this certainly is a good development! Thanks for this and I will be ordering a set... just as soon, as I get a start on this loco. Trouble is, the chassis problem is still a problem, and I am taking your advice to wait and see...

Hi Gordon, never could raise Ian from Huddersfield, so not etchings thus far. Anyone have an idea how to reach him?

Hi Phil

The rollers are from the Gaugemaster rolling road. They use to sell spares/extras for their rolling road at a reasonable price. Looking at their website it looks likes they no longer do the rolling road.

I seem to remember reading some where the only standard fitting was a BR Tender under frame supplied by Derby works.

That would accord with my research - and explain why I have a Bachmann tender chassis standing by !

I checked out various prototype steam loco chassis for a match - and the GWR Grange (or was it a Manor?) is remarkably close.

John Isherwood.

I have now received clearance to give some limited additional information concerning a new product under development, to assist in building a better GT3.

The product in question is a dedicated etched chassis kit; currently at the test etch stage.

This has been designed to be straightforward to build, but is NOT currently a commercial product.

It WILL have a correct scale wheelbase and coupling rods; something that none of the RTR options can offer.

If you wish to build an accurate GT3, a little more patience may be well worthwhile.

Regards,

John Isherwood.

I've only just seen this thread after I was 'tipped off' by another member. I can still supply the detail etches if anybody wants any but I will have to order them from the etchers. If anybody wants any please pm me.

Ian

Edit: I have just checked my box of etches and I have one full set of Loco and tender etches in stock.

Is it possible that John Isherwood, Ian Macdonald and Golden Arrow talk to each other to try and sort out a supply of all their bits and recommended parts for the parts they can't supply so those who wish to can buy the components to make the whole loco?

I know this could take some work, but I half suspect the work could prove useful and possibly even fruitful.

Does it include the cab windows?
