Finescale Review No 2

  • Hi everyone

The second issue of Finescale railway Modelling Review is at the printers and is due out before Christmas.

The contents are, once again, predominantly hands-on, illustrated every step of the way. They include:

.

A rake of Tyne Dock hoppers in 4mm, kit built by Pete Hill, largely using superglue. Amazing results.

In contrast, David Brandreth gives full chapter-and-verse on soldering whitemetal, involving seriously handy techniques like flattening, splattering and drawing (no, me either!)

A 7mm brass Drewry shunter gets repainted and weathered by Tim Shackleton, using many of the products and techniques developed by military modellers.

Anyone who has seen the working crossing gates on 'Coldfair Green', the layout of the Norfolk & Suffolk Area Group of the S4 Society will know just how smooth and prototypical they are. Here was have the full works exposed and explained.

A look at inset and inlaid track (in Proto:87) by someone we've always considered the maestro of trackwork, Brian Harrap.

Finally - in terms of major articles - we have Jim Smith-Wrights model of the New Street Lamp Building, unquestionably one of the ugliest (and thus 'modelogenic') buildings on the UK network. Think Victorian style meets BR bodge.

In addition, there is a look a various prototypes in our 'As It Was' section, lots of correspondence, plus news, notes and gossip.

Many thanks for the overwhelming response to issue No 1, which is just about to go to a third reprint. The support and trust is very much appreciated.

Regards

Bob Barlow

I wonder if the articles on soldering and gluing will stimulate a soldering versus super- gluing debate  in the vein of the recent  P4/EM flange deliberations?

Being from the era when Kemilway advocated the assembly of their Standard 4 chassis using "IS12 or any other cyanoacrylate adhesive of similar viscosity" I look forward to Mr Hills article.

I've still never decided what's the more frustrating? Burning my fingers or ending up with a wagon firmly glued to them!

I'm also party to Petes views on using EM wheels on P4 track...

On a couple of housekeeping points, the PayPal payment system through the Greystar website is set up to start from the current issue (still No 1 as I write this), but you can still pay by PayPal even if you want to start from, say, the next issue along. Just say so in the PayPal message box or drop me an email. Once we have reached issue No 4, the database will be a full record of subscribers and where they are, so you will be able to pay by PayPal (or any other way) confident that we already know where you're ongoing subscription begins.

Also some subscribers have already had emails from us via PayPal saying that their 'automatic recurring payments' have been cancelled, and more such email will follow in due course. Just to re-iterate, this does NOT mean subscriptions have been cancelled, only that PayPal's authorisation to pay us again in a year's time has been stopped. You will get a standard reminder with the last magazine in your subscription cycle and the decision to renew or not will be yours, not PayPal's. Using PayPal is simple and convenient, that's for sure, but we feel duty-bound to resist their drive for world domination!

Good to see this taken out of the 'Other Magazines' and given its own 'slot'.

O' course all we need now is for certain folks (no names, but see above...........) to start up another debate and we could give the MRJ thread a run for it's money!  :jester:
