NoelG
Only ran the motor on the rolling road, still at the workbench stage, testing still a bit away but I am confident it will be a smooth runner. Would be interested when your finished seeing a video clip of her running at very low speed, especially starting and stopping.
kirley
Class E401 This Q resin bodied kit underwent the brake fluid treatment and came through with only minor damage. When I was given this kit it came along with resin bogie sides but when I started to work on the kit they have “disappeared” so I cobbled together sides from plasticard. The major difficulty with this build was the uneven surfaces inside of the body. I had to construct a framework for the BulAnt chassis to sit on; it’s not pretty and took a lot of time to get the chassis to sit at the correct height and even. John Mayner’s etch was designed for the Class E421 body so I had to cut parts like the roof and buffer plates to fit the smaller E401 body, luckily the doors and grills fitted. I decided to paint the E401 in the black livery.

kirley
42’ Flat Wagons I was delighted to see Nile’s creation of CIE flat wagons in 3D materials. I went for his Mark 3 version in WSF and opted for using Bachmann Y25 bogies. The back wheels on the bogie were fouled by two of the stanchions but once they were removed there were no problems in the bogies moving freely. Tried them out on the most testing part of my layout and all ran freely. Here you can see the method I used to attach the bogies. Once I worked out how to do the first one the rest were an easy fix. I've still to add the hand wheels and decals but otherwise that's all that to it. Got 2 wagons in ‘FUD’ and it’s certainly a super smooth surface. It’s a good bit dearer than ‘WSF’ but you get hand wheels and pipes built in as well. I went for the Bachmann bogies again and after adding the coupling pockets and center pin they were ready to spray. Congratulations to Nile for his innovative approach in designing these wagons with such excellent results and looking forward to see the 47’ versions coming soon I hope.
kirley
Here you can compare the two materials, the wagon with the hand-wheels is made from 'FUD'.
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted February 16, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 16, 2018 Lovely work and a great finish. I think from what I have seen around 20 of the wagons under construction, which must be pleasing for Nile. I too look forward to a 47 footer as well, perhaps just one or two to suit a train for a longer container. Robert

RMweb Premium Nile Posted February 17, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 17, 2018 Looking good, they've come out nicely. I've made the offending stanchion thinner on the next version, if it's still a problem I'll remove it.

kirley
E Class Classes 401 & 421 finally finished. Lots of difficulties finishing them off including getting the bodies to sit level on the chassis and adding weights. Quite pleased on how they turned out and now it's time to put them to work.

kirley
NIR MPV Moving up to current time, NIR has recently introduced a Windhoff MPV and I saw a Bachmann model at a good price. This is what you get. As you can see it is master & slave 2 unit model where as the NIR version is one unit with a cab at either end. I cut and shut a cab onto the master unit, and yes you can see the join. Some wiring was needed to connect the two parts electrically. Stripping out of the cabs was next getting rid on the many fine details on the model and adding the roof extension and cooler on the roof. Little things like the moving of the position of the horns and windscreen wipers from the bottom to the top of the windscreen was yet another task. Every time I looked at photographs I saw another details. All stripped out ready for masking and painting. Primer and roof colour added. Top coat and reassembly next. pat141
Very nice, it's something different. It's a pity you had to cut one up.
Mike 84C
Thats looking good Kieran. And very brave! I hope the track machine came at a very good price. I bought a Bachmann J11 two yrs ago but it was new and toooo nice to attack with a saw!
kirley
If you want a good running chassis it’s the price you sometimes have to pay Mike. I have a new Hornby Loco sitting on my work bench for the past few days waiting for me to take the saw to it, it’s just making that first cut..... kirley
NIR MPV Painted completed and Cabs re assembled and attached to the model. This unit is numbered No.11 but with the new numbering system that translates into 12 digits so I did not bother.
Hunslet 102
Wow Kieran, you only spoke about starting this last week at the Glasgow show and here it is all done and dusted. Great job and I commend you on your bravery to take the razor to such a piece of kit

kirley
GRS/CIE E1 0-4-4T locomotive. I first saw a conversion from a Hornby Class M7 to a GSR 279/ CIE E1 Class locomotive by Scotts Mac and later by Heirflick on another Web Site. Both said it was a straightforward conversion so I decided to give it a go. I was helped by Charles Friel with some very good photographs so I scaled a photograph down to the model size and compared both. As you can see there was quite a bit of work to do especially around the cab. I could not find a dome the right size so I had a go at casting my own. I would have like to lower the side tanks but Hornby had put weights in them so I let that go, as in all these conversions comprises have to be made. My first attempt at changing the cab roof was not successful so I redid that. My paint colour was a mix to get the CIE grey. Whistle and pipes still to be added but the important thing is it runs; ended up putting the decoder into the bunker. A few hours tomorrow should finish it off. Hunslet 102
From an ultra modern MPV to a really old fashioned E,nothing is to complex for the Kirley workbench. Another great conversation, well done
