Hi I'm new on the forum, be grateful of your help.

Can anyone advise of the earliest year that Class 37's in Large Logo form ran through the West Yorkshire area specifically the Calder Valley, and pinpoint a couple of examples?

My up and coming 7mm layout is set in 1985/6 however the earliest pics I can find are late '87. Thanks for your help

There will always be some rare example I guess, but LL examples did not feature in large numbers until they were transferred away from the ScR in 87 onwards.

There was always a fairly good chance of seeing these in the Newcastle and Carlisle areas in the mid 80s and these were always borrowed for local trip workings.

There were a couple allocated to SF in your period - 057 and 116 but they wont have figured regularly in the Leeds area until they were transferred to the Freightliner pools on the late 80s.

The only other opprtunity I can think of is getting LL locos from ZC back north, these may have traversed the Calder Valley route.

If in doubt, no one can prove that it never happened !  IMIRAIL always prevails :-)

Dave

The closest LL 37 I have to Yorkshire in 1985 / 86 is this one

post-12740-0-79240400-1420157724.jpg

37191 at Darlington with 1E28 0835 Glasgow QS - Scarborough which heading for Yorkshire would have worked to York / Scarborough 01/06/1985

This ones close not my photo but Mancester Vic in 1986 (10th April) not sure where the train went or how the 37 got back to Scotland as it was back at Fort William on 02/06/1986

The Clitheroe - Clyde Cement train may have produced a LL 37 the earliest I can find however is Feb 1987 again not my photo.

Cant find anymore.

I have a TOPS report for Preston 16th November 1983 which shows an Eastfield Pair of 37011 and 37171 at Clitheroe with 37171 going to Wigan Springs Branch for an A Exam before heading back to Clitheroe and North again. Unfortunatly 37011 wasn't LL until 1985??

LOCATION - 29141 - CLITHEROE RIBBLSCEM

37011 ED B  B XA    NH  B 17   B 17    ED 0717 N 000?F 071611 0F00
37171 ED O     XA          A -1   B 131                   N 000?F  071611 SPAX

And another report for Warrington same date showing the 37's on Wigan shed

LOCATION-35150-WIGAN TMD M&EE
37011 ED B  B XA    NH  B 17   B 17     ED 0717 N 000?F 0F00
37171 ED O     XA            A -1   B 131                  N 000?F SPAX

So the Scottish class 37's worked into the area just finding evidence of Large Logo in 1985 / 1986.

While looking into this found some odd ones on Flickr for 1985 / 1986 so they did get about just can't pin one in the area you want....

37025 at Ipswich 28/04/1986

You would have also had all of the Scottish 37/4's moving north in that period 1985/1986

Most would have gone up the WCML but some not taking the most direct route to Scotland

for example

37408 at York??

https://www.flickr.com/photos/42377201@N07/6186059218

37410 at Hull??

https://www.flickr.com/photos/62160118@N04/5655025806

Hope these help.

Aha a rare photo of 37 104 with R/F General Brandings. Apparently only a couple of 37's carried these, I recall trying in vain to find photos of it for a re-paint job a few years back !!

  • 1 year later...

Tinsley depot had a few LL 37s based there in the late 80s and 90s so these may have appeared in the west Yorkshire area, 057,116 and 128 were some I remember seeing on the depot

You could also check photos of Healey Mills.
