I know what you mean about the regret.  I cancelled my pre-order, only to see one and wish I hadn't.  Its completely inappropriate for my layout, but it does look good!  I ended up getting mine on eBay.

The yellow ended version still seems to be in stock at Hattons for £290.00: http://www.ehattons.com/34059/Bachmann_Branchline_31_256DC_Class_251_Blue_Pullman_6_car_Midland_set_in_Nanking_blue_with_full_yellow_ends_D/StockDetail.aspx

Some Railmatch paint, fox transfers, and if the word "midland" offends you, a bit of careful removal would work.

MIB Models advertise the full blue version as in stock, but for £495.00, that might be a tad high, and only a fiver short of the Olivias trains price:

MIB Models: http://www.mibmodels.co.uk/Bachmann_31-255DC_Midland_Pullman.htm

Olivias trains: http://www.oliviastrains.com/trains/model-trains/Bachmann-diesel/Bachmann-midland-pullman/Bachmann-midland-pullman-6-car-set-in-nanking-blue-livery-31-255dc/

I hope that helps.

Actually, the Bachmann Midland Pullman isn't the same as the one you (and I) travelled on in the sixties. Never mind that. It's a truly great model. If you can source one at reasonable outlay, then go for it. You won't regret it.

Wow, £495?

For that, I would also install two sound decoders and a custom sound project.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hello Ian...Thanks for the message.....I was only 5 at the time (actually was it was my 5th Birthday in late May on the day of travel, that day is burnt into my memories as it was a turning point in my life) when we left Paddington after docking that morning in Tilbury after a five week sailing on the P & O Himalaya, having been met by family they purchased tickets for a trip on the way back down to Birmingham....sorry for my ignornace on the subject but which Pullman would have operated the service we would have travelled on....I recall that huge blue train standing in Paddington taking us northward,  perhaps my memories of that trip have been clouded over time and my knowledge of operational traction is not that great for sure....were some of the Midland Pullman's transferred over to Western Region after a stint on the St. Pancras to Manchester run? Cheers for the information...Kind regards Bob

The train modelled by Bachmann was a 'luxury' train developed in the late 50's by BR and spent its working life as a flagship of business travel between Manchester Central ( now long closed but redeveloped as the G-Mex Centre in Manchester) and London St.Pancras.It was non stop and First Class only. It consisted of a six car unit, working the Midland Main Line.

A couple of years later, the Western Region took delivery of few 8 car units to cover Pullman services between Paddington,South Wales,Bristol and Birmingham/Wolverhampton.These catered also for second class passengers and it would have been one of these that you remember.I recall they were pretty rough riders and a meal at your seat was challenging.

Ahhhh...Brilliant information thanks...you see as a lad of 5, my memories have been 'tainted' over time by an assumption and lack of knowledge....much appreciate the reply...Cheers Bob

The WR sets went in to service a few months later (September 1960), the LMR set was July 1960.

When  I  was(very)   young  we  lived  close  to  REDDISH TMD  where  the  Midland  Pullmans  were  serviced  overnight, so    we  used to cycle to a footbridge in Levenshulme close  to  Levenshulme  South  station under which  The  Pullman  passed as it ran ECS  from   Manchester  Central to Reddish.I clearly  remember  the  intense heat  that it  gave  off as it  passed a few  feet below  us!

One  of my Uncles  used the  Pullman  for  Business trips  to  London.

I beleive  that  Iron  Footbridge  still exists  today  but  the  railway  has  long  gone  If  you  care  to  Google ' UCP  Levenshulme Photo'  it  should bring you to a page of photos  click on the one  with a  tall chimney ( That is  the UCP tripe works!!)  and  the  footbrige  where we used to stand is visible,  we never  had  any cameras  in  those  days so no  pics of the Pullman

According to Kevin Robertsons book the WR sets did commence in September 1960 but he indicates that the South Wales Pullman didn't start at the same time so that could be where the discrepancy occurs.[/quote

Apologies, you are quite correct, the Birmingham Pullman commenced 12th July 1960. Oops.....embarrassing. Source Michael Mensing:Birmingham Snow Hill : A Great Station. Ah well,my spotting was at Bristol TM.

  • 3 weeks later...

Keith Model Railways,Leicestershire,Tel: 01162778634 had a Nanking Blue set for sale at Princes Risborough Model Railway exhibition yesterday priced at £299. It was still for sale when I left about 12.00.( I have no connection with this company)

Well I know we are not likely to get another Pullman offered from our Barwell friends anytime soon but just a little food for thought!

I well recall that a Blue Pullman was not likely either, before the first announcement.

I for one would buy another if I could get a reverse liveried one in grey-blue with jumpers - though do expect to pay a pretty penny!

Just wonder if one day we might get a surprise announcement - you never know!

Already been done as a special for Lord & Butler in Cardiff.

One with DCC sound on eBay at the moment for a mere £510.
