Dave,

A fantastic selection of pictures. Be great to see some more in due course. Many thanks in advance,

Keith

Hi Dave,

I agree with Keith above! Whenever you're ready, I'm eager for more please!

You must have had a good few holidays in Europe, did it lead to any European modelling at all?

Cheers,

John E.

It's a Yes from me .Fantastic.

Very nice pictures. I'd like to see more please

Many thanks for the comments.

I'll add more as and when I get chance/time. As with the British thread I'll try to remember to change the date in the title line whenever I add new images.

As for modelling - I have a Swiss n gauge layout set in the area served by the Sudostbahn, somewhere between Arthgoldau and Pfaffikon.

Very nice David, do you have any of the TEE as thats a classic design. Its also a great LP by Kraftwerk but thats another thread.

Yes, a number of photos of TEE's, loco hauled and otherwise.  Do you mean the ones which were called grey mice (Graue Maus) in their later years?  i.e. the Rae TEE

Switzerland Zug Rae TEE 1055 Zurich to Milan 14.59 Sunday 14th August 1988 C11101

Some of you may need to look up Zug on a map.  It is on the line from Zurich to Arth Golday and is the junction where the line to Luzern (Lucerne) leaves the line to Arth Goldau and the Gotthard route.

Anyone else think that "Trans Europe Express" is a cooler brand name than the current equivalents "Euro City", and the made-up names like Thalys, Lyria etc?

On the other hand maybe it's got too much of a retro connotation nowadays.

Did you ever get to Italy?  I have a soft spot for Italian railways after going on holiday there by train as a kid, but unfortunately I have no photos to show for it!

Mal

I have been into Italy from Switzerland but have only two or three railway photos.

Another David here but with a TEE shot that David F might not have.

Indeed those and my favourite the DB VT 11.5 or Class 601/602. I have seen the Swiss one in the flesh but not the German one.

A few notes first about captions in this thread.

I always caption photos before uploading them, this means that I cannot use some symbols, especially "." and "/" .  When I remember I'll alter them on the captions under each photo, but the original file will obey the Windows naming rules.

The locomotives classes will usually be shown as they were when I took the photos, as that is the format in my notes.  I know that some, especially in Switzerland, have since changed.

The spellings of most places will be as written in the country where they are situated.

I don't know how often I'll add photos, it depends on how much time I have to correct images and caption them.

We'll start with a visit to Switzerland this evenings.  All the photos were taken at Arth-Goldau station.  This is situated at the point where the lines from Zurich, Luzern, and the north through Rotkreuz converge and then head south over the Gotthard.  It is also the junction for the Sudostbahn which goes across the country to the Bodensee (Lake Constance).

Great new photo thread, Dave . I'll be following this one.

I've also tried to take pics of trains whilst on holiday in Europe over the years.

As you model Switzerland, I thought you might like this one. A BLS Ae 6/8 with a model size freight. Interlaken 1990.

Hi David (& Mal!),

I haven't really followed the Swiss scene all that much but I must admit, those ancient electric locos really do something to me, I love them!

Was it that the BLS had brown locos and the SBB had green?

And that charming little 0-6-0T, simply gorgeous!

Thanks again,

John E.

Generally, but then the SBB started painting locos bright red, then the the BLS bought new locos (Class 465) which were dark blue.  Before BLS locos were brown they were green.  Now there are many liveries, plus all the other "private" railway companies with their colours.  To make it more complicated the early SBB electrics were painted brown before they changed to green.  Preserved early SBB electrics are usually painted brown.  At the time when the photos were taken preserved SBB electrics were used on regular fairly short diagrams to keep them in good working order.

As you will realise the history of liveries can be quite complex....

Some of the other railways have "interesting" liveries, as you will see over the coming months, all being well.

The 0-6-0T was built as a shunting loco.

We'll stay in Switzerland for this evening's photos, but this time in the French speaking west. They were taken in July and August 1978.

The first photo is on the Lausanne  Echallens Bercher line which is metre gauge and for much of its length runs alongside roads.  It is electrified at 1500V DC

Cheseaux LEB BDe4/4 22 Bercher to Lausanne 28th July 78 J6171

Epesses is on the line which runs along the north side of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) from Geneva through Montreux to Brig and the Simplon Tunnel.  Epesses is between Lausane and Montreux.

Chamby is on the MOB  Montreux Oberland Bernois railway.  It's main line runs from Montreux to Zweisimmen where it connects with the BLS route.  It is metre gauge and electrified at 900V DC.

Chamby is above Montreux, overlooking Lac Leman.  The MOB climbs at around 1 in 14 from Montreux, it is adhesion worked.  The steepest part is about 1 in 13.7.

In the summer of 1967 Mum, Dad and I went to France to stay with friends in St Avold, near Metz and not far from the German border.  Those were the days when you could only take a limited amount of sterling out of the country - something like £10 per person.

While we were there I celebrated my 18th birthday with a very good meal in Riquewihr.  The rest of my birthday present from my friends was a trip down a French coal mine (their father was a senior manager) followed by a visit to the French coal board's railway system (Houllieres Basin Lorraine) with a cab ride and a look round the sheds.
