The railway is visible in the first photo, if you look carefully. It is at the right hand end, just above the water. The structure part way up the cliff on the left is the road. The railway at Fluelen has changed a lot since these photos were taken, as have many stations in Switzerland since the late 80s. Assuming the train would have left Roma around 20.00 and Milano before midnight, presumably it was fairly early in the morning. I took it at 10.58 a.m. I suspect it may have been running late unless the sleepers were simply being worked as ecs at the head of the train. I noted the time for almost all my Swiss photos. I don't think it's an SNCB loco (though it could be from Belgium) and it seems to have gone by the time the lists I have to hand were compiled. The locomotive is an 0-6-0T built by Couillet in Belgium (works number 1777 of 1923) which worked at the Segré iron mines (France). It appears to have ceased working in 1960 and stayed in a deteriorating condition on-site until it was bought by a private collector who put it on display with two Wagon-Lits coaches (diner no. 4217 and lounge car ex-sleeper no. 3835) in connection with a restaurant at the Paris Heliport, Porte de Sèvres. There is a photo of the loco at its industrial location down this page: http://forum.e-train.fr/viewtopic.php?t=73905 In 1991, the locomotive and carriages were exported to Japan, to be put on display there by a hotel at Lake Biwa. In the early 2000s both carriages and locomotives could not be found and are thought to have been scrapped.
